Just want to ask a bit of advice, every day when I boot my pc I can't get internet connection. It comes on after a while but was just wondering if the problem could be at my end??

Re: Trouble With Internet

I am talking a lot longer than that, like to have a look on before going to Mums and there has been no chance since I started turning everything off.

Just had a right ****** of a time getting online. Not same issue as you Bernie or the others were talking about.

PC itself was ok, just couldn’t get online. Turned out that for some reason or other Zone Alarm firewall had altered the setting for the internet to High. Shoved it back to medium and “Hey Presto”

We leave our router on 24/7 but sometimes it throws a wobbler and we have to switch it off and on again but it doesn't take very long to fire up again once it's switched on.

We are going to get a new one. We're changing ISP soon. That may result in us disappearing for a week or so.

Re: Trouble With Internet

It should only take a couple of minute to get an internet connection by the router. what 'might' be happening is if you turn the PC on first, Windows tries to get an IP from teh router which isn't 'ready' so it gets a fallback IP. you then won't be able to connect till Windows 'realises' that there is a nice shiny wifi network waiting for it to connect to. this could be anything from minutes to hours depending on how friendly windows is feeling that particular phase of the moon.

The trick is to ensure you turn the router on first. When you first try to connect if it fails, check the lights on the router that it has conencted( look what they look like twhen you are working for a clue. (mine has 2 green lights, teh ADSL sync and the wifi one, YMMV). if they aren't as expected then its an issue at ISP end, if they are, hover over teh network connection icon in system tray, right click and choose "repair". This forces it to ask for a shiny new IP and will clear any problems on your end.

With regards to the turn it off or not debate, I do, basically it would be there burning leccy from bedtime (10:30 ish) till 7PM the following evening doing nowt. it might only be a few watts but times that by 20 hours a day and by 365 days a year and it adds up to a fair amount and leccy ain't cheap anymore!( not forgetting the green aspect!)

You've got a point there Ian. It might be an idea for me to switch everything off at night.

Re: Trouble With Internet

I now do a quick look round to see taht everything that can be off is off. The TV uses 0.1W on standby so I'm happy for that to stay on as it would mean messing round behind it to turn teh plug off and those wireless switches use more than teh TV on standby!

Julie washing machine has a blue LED that is powerful enough to light up the whole of Accy( or it seems like it) so thats another that gets killed. We used to leave teh Sky box on all day and night but that is now in standby(Sky+ so we leave it on so it can record stuff) adn the TV transmitter and receiver for upstairs was left on ( now off unless we are actually watching something.) Its quite amazing how much stuff you do leave on untill you do a critical check of if it actually needs to be on.

I leave electric clocks on on kitchen equipment (cooker and what have you) but that would be daft to switch them off because the time would be all to pot.
