mobile problem, help!!
hello
i wonder if anyone could help. Last week i dropped ,my fone down the toilet, yeah i know stupid but i didnt do it on purpose, anyway i picked the fone up, open it, dried it and let it on radiator overnight. but still not working. It a samsung g600 and its not older than couple of months, is a contract fone and because i dont have insurance they cant replace it ( obviously). Does anyone know what can i do, i really need the fone and cant afford to buy one. Thanks:( |
Re: mobile problem, help!!

Re: mobile problem, help!!
i didnt want to take it apart in case i made it worse, the fone lights up but yesterday didnt switch on, when it did on sunday as i went to put my pin number the numbers dont work

Re: mobile problem, help!!
You need to dry it for a lot longer than 1 night before powering it up, unfortunately you may have now damaged it beyond repair as water and tiny electronics don't mix very well.
You can check if your house insurance covers it ( it covers tvs' radios etc so why not a mobile). My Bank account actually gives us mobile phone insurance amongst other things ( car breakdown, will writing, emergency assistance, travel insurance + more) for a few quid a month. it works out a lot cheaper than doing all these things seperately. all you can really do is find an old mobile to see you on whilst you get to the end of this contract or save up and buy something decent s/h. |

Re: mobile problem, help!!
They can tell phones that have been water damaged. I believe they now have markers inside that change colour once "wet" so they can immediately tell.

Re: mobile problem, help!!
do you not have home contents insurance ? accidental damage ? if you do then it may be covered by that
|
Re: mobile problem, help!!

So if you have a fire or are broken into you would loose everything? |
Re: mobile problem, help!!
I know i posted this in another similar thread but put your mobile phone into a box that has a lid fill it full of rice and put the lid on - leave it for at least 24 hous. The rice will drag out any excess moisture that is in the phone - as others have said you may have done the damage as it may have shorted when you switched it on. but its worth a try :D

tried that one, didnt work, if anything it made it worse :( i thought u have to own a property to get insurance, im gonna look into getting one( its never too late) |
Re: mobile problem, help!!
You should keep those little bags of silica gel that come with electronic items and other things that might be damaged by condensation (our storybook albums come with them) as sucking up water is what they are designed for...
It's not good for your stomach, though, so keep them out of the reach of children. |

You can have contents cover. Sadly most do not cover mobile phones. Could try sell it for spares to get a bit of cash back in. |
Re: mobile problem, help!!
As mentioned earlier, put it in a bag of rice for a few days to draw the moisture out, they have pieces of litmus paper inside then now that turns red when it gets wet/damp. It's recommended not to repair a wet/damp phone but some places will attempt it

Re: mobile problem, help!!
Salt is better than rice for drying things out.
I always put pans of salt in our caravan over winter to make sure that any moisture is attracted to it rather than the furniture etc. Its always wet through by Spring. |
Re: mobile problem, help!!
but salt will get through the small holes in the phone but rice won't

Re: mobile problem, help!!
depends on what sort of salt :D

Re: mobile problem, help!!
As well as corrosion, if the salt gets into the phone and hits the moisture, there's more danger of a short circuit.
If the phone's useless, I'd be tempted to buy some distilled water and dunk it in that and skoosh it around (technical term) while wearing marigolds or similar to avoid contaminating the distilled water. Don't have the battery or SIM in while you're doing it. Dry the surface & put it in a food bag in the airing cupboard with some silica or rice. Considering all the effort, though, you might be better off just putting the SIM in an unlocked eBay replacement? Is it a really expensive 'phone? |

Distilled water is useless for cleaning the boards, if you do have a spillage or as in this case drop it down the bog it should be cleaned using Isolpropyl alcohol cleaner which is for cleaning circuit boards, this will in most cases drive the water and indeed any salts from the circuit board and dries a great deal quicker than just placing on a radiator over night, (though no electrical supply should be connected until it has all completely evaporated ). Putting the circuit board in a food bag could kill it quicker than dowsing in salt, these boards are electrostatically sensitive and the static created would often mean certain death to components. The air needs to circulate around the board to assist evaporation, otherwise condensation can gather. If after drying it is not going straight back into the 'phone then a proper bag similar to the ones Hard drives come in can be used for storage. However I do agree with this statement:- Quote:
Well entwisi, have I passed the test? Can I be added to your geeks list now? :worthy: |

I repair, down to component level, they fit the cables, that I attach everything to! (of course PLC's have made a dramatic change, now none of them can work with 1960's gear it does their heads in). :D |
