its twice as fast as I could get on ADSL here, thats why I went to cable.

I suspect a lot would get slower than that

You need to find out why yours is so low.

The wireless should not effect it much at all at those speeds unless you have a network problem at your end. You can prove it is not by plugging into your router with a cable and turning the wireless off on your laptop.
