Wigan wanted Owen
Wigan tourist promoter Dave Whelan has denied that his attempt to bring Michael Owen to the empty JJB Stadium was a publicity stunt.
In a press conference held at the Visit Wigan centre, Whelan wearing a ‘Wigan is Giggin’ t-shirt, explained that Owen was a realistic target despite failing to sign Dean Windass. “It was not a publicity stunt to try and bring Michael to the JJB Stadium - located off Junction 25 of the M6, turn left at roundabout onto the dual carriageway heading into Wigan, capacity 25,000, tickets start at £20.” “We are serious about this club and you’ll see that when I hopefully complete the signings of Thierry Henry, Russell Crowe and Mohammed Ali,” said Whelan, before handing out goody bags which contained a ‘What Wigan Has To Offer’ post-it note, a season-ticket and Gary Walsh. |

Just for the rcord and of course for the A wipe who deducted Karma a quote from Paul Jewell
"It just doesn't happen, does it, Michael Owen coming to Wigan? But it'd be an interesting question to ask him. If Newcastle weren't in the frame and Liverpool didn't go for him, would he have come to us or stayed at Real Madrid where he probably wouldn't get a game? It's not as daft as it sounds" – Paul Jewell. |
