Real ale and Football
I am visiting Blackburn and Accrington in the next few days to do some research for next season's Football and Real Ale Guides
www.footballandrealaleguide.co.uk/ These are written and published by a bloke called Richard Stedman and he's asked me to write a brief cultural guide for each 'league' town. Which friendly real ale pubs should I try in Accrington? http://www.bradwan.com/page.php?page=cultural_guide |
Re: Real ale and Football
Start at the Stag in Church. You'll probably meet some of us in there.

Re: Real ale and Football
The Peel Park at the top of Turkey St always has at least 4 hand pulled real ales on;often from micro breweries and i am reliably informed by my real ale loving partner that they are very well kept. Also has footie on the telly too!

Re: Real ale and Football
Cheers for the advice. I enjoyed Accrington, the Haworth Gallery is a gem and I was really please to hear it was going to be taken over by a trust. Compare that to the fact Blackburn are closing to Lewis Textile Museum because the council there are clowns and phillistines. It suggests Hyndburn Council has at least some clue. My pub report is below. This is not going to appear in www.footballandrealaleguide.co.uk/ but I'd be surprised if Richard Stedman did not at least visit the recommendations when he visits before season's end, that is as long as Stanley are still top.
Accrington Pubs The Peel Park Hotel http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs...tel/Accrington At the top of a long, long street. Right next to Stanley’s old ground with lots of old photos of it. 6 beers, usually with a mild and only one bitter above 4.5% David bought it 3 years ago when it was boarded up. He was really friendly and gave me a lift to Great Harwood! To: The Victoria Hotel http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs.../Great_Harwood Multi roomed Grade II listed Edwardian boozer with a wonderful tiled interior. Lots of very good beers and a star turn of a landlady called Jean. The only thing against it is the distance from Accrington. The Royal Hotel http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs.../Great_Harwood Multi beered and a brew pub, with the biggest tart of a pub cat I have come across. How can Great Harwood manage two such good pubs within walking distance of each other? The Hyndburn Circular bus stops outside and will take you to Blackburn or Accrington via Livingstone Road. Crown. Right by the ground. No one I spoke to had been in recently but they reckoned it was unlikely to have real ale. The Greyhound is a Sams Smiths house a short distance away. There are a lot of other boozers on the road but they are spread out. I also went in the http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs...Inn/Accrington as I walked back from the Howarth Gallery. S&N boozer with one real ale, which was Ruddles County and good, but I it is a long way from the ground. I did not manage to get to the Stag in Church, which is near Church & Oswaldtwistle Station, surely the best station name in Britiain. http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs...tag_Inn/Church |
