What A Strange Match!

I've had the mis/fortune (delete as appropriate :D) of having to sit through the Lille v Utd. match.

First, I thought there going to be another Hillsborough when all the Utd fans were penned into the lower tier causing crushing.

Secondly, the Lille manager was threatening to take the players off the pitch for a goal disallowed for a foul on Vidic, which resulted in a goal for Utd and the Lille fans pelting objects onto the pitch

Capped it all when I see that WINGY was playing in the game at Nantes  :D

Why did the police open the gates?
Have they not learnt anything from Hillsborough?

Cheers for that Jen

I said, whilst the commentators were reporting on it, that, had I been Fergie I would have removed the players until the fans were safe .......... Had to chuckle when the Lille manager threatened to take his players off for a lot less serious incident later in the match.

Re: What A Strange Match!

Apparently Fergie had enough safety issues with his players to worry about also, missiles hurled at his players but glad they are going to take this matter further with FIFA/UEFA whoever lol, & hope they do something about Lille, cos if it was a UK ground there would of been hell to pay for & totally slated. I think european football is getting worse, what with the Italians & now this incident.

I can feel some sackings coming on, especially the assistant Lille coach that seemed to instigate the walk off and wouldn't let go of the ball

Re: What A Strange Match!

Being a United fan first and foremost and thus I will be accused of bias towards them, I watched and I wasn’t too impressed with what I saw.

The rough pitch didn’t help to create flowing football. But that’s football - you have to take things as they are. Lille adapted better to the pitch conditions and United were lucky to come away with a win and it was only some desperate defending that gave them the result.

The Lille goal was not a goal. The forward clearly pushed Vidic away so that he could head the ball.

United scored from a perfectly legitimate free kick and you have to thank Giggs for his speed of thought and excellent execution. The referee does not HAVE to blow his whistle for the kick to be taken. He can indicate and he did as he turned and ran back away from the spot.

Then the toys came out of the pram. But what on earth were the United players doing getting involved?

I am looking forward to the return leg but I doubt if it will be pretty.

The EUFA enquiry on the “I’m taking my ball home” incident and the following missile throwing by their fans should get Lille chucked out of the competition but I would prefer them to go out by being beaten at Old Trafford.

More seriously any enquiry should focus on why the Man U fans were crowded into a space that wasn’t large enough for them.

cant stand united, but agree with jambutty about both goal incidents, also think lille should be booted out of the competition, what that coach did endagered many people and if the frogs have any gumption they will sack the prick.

Unfortunatly this incident will not stop the chants on 3rd March when Man Utd play Liverpool. No doubt The Sun newspaper will have its own version of events, my guess is they run a story along the lines that it must have been Liverpool fans trying to get in to mug the United fans.

I'm appalled by the news reports. Didn't see it myself because I was out.
