No it isnt. Why would it be?
Tennis is a great game.

Tealeaf 03-06-2004 16:14

Re: Is Tennis A Puffters Game

OK..what's all this fuss about Henman then? He has about as much chance of winning Wimbledon as England have of progressing beyond the group stage of Euro 2004....

When we get an English (or British) champion then I shall start taking some notice of it - but until then, no. The same goes for the English footy team. I, for one, will not be wasting valuable time watching the likes of that fool Beckham; the result is a foregone conclusion, I'm afraid. Why bother?

Ceejache 03-06-2004 18:23

Re: Is Tennis A Puffters Game

If the result is a foregone conclusion can you let me know so I can stick a ton on it at Ladbrookes...

Thanks in advance!

(I must say that your stance is rather defeatist for an Englishman!)

Yes...I can hear the cries of "C'mon Tim...C'mon Tim" echoeing around my mind already...How come at Wimbledon when the umpire asks for quiet there's always one prat who has to get one last shout in?

Bagpuss 03-06-2004 20:38

Re: Is Tennis A Puffters Game

Tennis is only good to watch for one thing and that's for the women players in their tennis outfits, come on lads admit that's the reason you watch Wimbledon.

Bazf 03-06-2004 21:14

Yeah got to agree Bagpuss Wimbledon the last outpost for good wholesome short outfits on great ladies bodies .:D

Tiger Tim? The man shows as much aggression as a 3 day old dead kitten.

See he got screwed over by an Argie. O well theres always next year and the year after and the year after that and.......... you get the idea.

slater_scott 05-06-2004 09:33

Re: Is Tennis A Puffters Game

Yes but henman plays his best tennis on grass, he is poor on clay, but yet managed to get to the semis on clay courts and played a good match against the argie.

Bazf 06-06-2004 14:57

Re: Is Tennis A Puffters Game

Wimbledon is grass when did he last win it, or for that matter when did he last win a Tournament on or off grass?

slater_scott 07-06-2004 07:24

Re: Is Tennis A Puffters Game

Yes but he has been in the semi finals 4 times, and he is pretty unlucky that he has not won 1 of them.

Tealeaf 07-06-2004 08:17

Re: Is Tennis A Puffters Game

The fact is Henman has won nowt. I've more chance of winning Wimbledon that he has.

yerself 07-06-2004 10:40

Re: Is Tennis A Puffters Game

You could have got this one wrong Tealeaf.

Taken from yesterday's Sunday Express.
Nearly man Henman reveals his hard centre as he crosses fingers again for Wimbledon.
" It makes me laugh when people say I'm not tough. I've always had the killer instinct."
said Timmy.

By the sound of things Scott Slater.

Ceejache 11-06-2004 08:18

He's not short of cash or female attention so I would love to be compared to him - unfortunately I have neither.....I see everyone is participating in our national pastime again, I don't have much time for tennis and he does flatter to deceive but he's British/English so I'm 'behind' him. C'mon the English Tiddlywinks XI!!!!!

Ahem... and did they? :)

As for womens tennis kits... Anyone remember the best poster ever made... ya might have to be over 30 :) It involved an itch .... been reproduced I believe but never as well as the original.

Not over 30 but I know the poster you mean Kipax. Not very convenient to have an itch in that place when you're in a crowded shopping centre, luckily for us she didn't seem that self-concious!

WillowTheWhisp 30-06-2004 12:15

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

The one I remember wasn't in a shopping centre, unless you mean the poster was in a shop window.

I saw it in the Athena shops. Are there still Athena shops? I stopped buying posters years ago.

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

Why is it we always have to ridicule the country's best at everything? It's almost like some people want them to fail so they can kick 'em when their down - the same people who would be cheering if they won something for the country. A sickening and disappointing attitude.....

Smiffy16 30-06-2004 18:09

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

Henman got smashed by an unseeded player in the quarters today.......as we always say " there's always next year and the year after and the year after that." I personally don't think that Henman will ever win Wimbledon.

AnthonyS 30-06-2004 20:09

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

What a suprise. Henman out in a quaterfinal. What are the chances of that happening again next year?

Ceejache 01-07-2004 08:11

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

I think it is a testament to the guys strength of character that he keeps coming back with the inner belief that he can win it despite the repeated disappointments. Its not a surprise that people ridicule him every year for trying. What are the chances of that happening again next year? Why do some of us feel the need to mock our finest?

slater_scott 01-07-2004 09:17

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

Its a shame and i dont think he will have any chance of winning the grand slam now. But he got £313,000 for his quater final venture, so laugh all you want tealeaf but he is the winner with that kind of money.

Tealeaf 01-07-2004 12:01

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

I'm not laughing;I'm disgusted. Are you seriously saying that this clown Henman has just been rewarded with a third of a million quid for doing little more than turn up for a couple of knock-abouts with a racquet & ball? No wonder British sport is in the state it's in....well, you stick to your puffy tennis. I'm off to Henley tomorrow to see a bit of rowing, a sport where we don't have hype, looney money or hysterical, screaming post-pubescent schoolgirls; we just have world champions.

Can't blame little Timmy though can you.. He has been brought up playing Tennis. Finds himself to be so good at it that he is the best in his country and as you say theres "hype, looney money or hysterical, screaming post-pubescent schoolgirls."

Whats he to do? Turn it all down in case it upsets some bloke on an accrington messageboard... Nagh he is gonna go for it just as you would if you where good at Tennis and people threw money at you..

Cheer up :)

Tealeaf 01-07-2004 12:18

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

It's just a shame little Timmy was'nt taught how to win....still, I had a right good laugh (although, honestly, I would'nt have done if I'd have known about the dosh)

Rowing? just like any other sport, really....it's all about hard work, committment, skill, sweat.....the usual attributes. Just a shame that it's rarely found at the top levels of English footy or tennis. If it was, we could possibly win something for a change. Ah well, dream on you guys.

What a fasinating comment, CJ...you really do need to be careful of what you're taking; I've heard there's a few bad batches around. Anyway, lets hope you're better soon. When you are, read this carefully:

1)As regards rugby, I do not recall making any comments on the England "Down-Under" tour, nor any result forecast. I think it's pretty obvious to anyone that since the World Cup final, we've gone way down. The team has changed substancially and the tactics have changed in Wilko's absence. All of this has been pretty obvious since the 6 nations when we were soundly beaten by the Frogs & Micks. However, unlike those following the beleaguered antics of our footy team, we have not been blinkered by our own stupidity into believing that all is inherently right and the championship would be rightfully ours except for outrageous misfortune.

2) Rowing is just another sport I like. In fact, I like most sports with the exception of those were the hype is greater than the reality, such as tennis & premiership/national footy. Any fool with any sense whatsoever could see what was going to happen to Henman and the footy team; unfortunatly, tribal instincts see otherwise. The great tragedy of English footy is that no one seems capable of grasping the reality and making the thought-out and cold clinical decisions that will lead to at least a fighting chance of reaching the World Cup 2006 finals. First decision - get rid of Sven & Beckham. I really doubt that will happen, though; England will continue to wallow in it's own cesspool of self-idolitry and mediocre footy.

Ceejache 01-07-2004 17:05

Re: Is Tennis A Pu**ters Game

I was joshing to be honest but a couple of points. Be patient as I am currently battling with the demons of ether.....apparently.....

1. (Rugby)I never said you made any predictions about the tour. (Football)No-one was blinkered by stupidity into believing all was right and that by rights we would win. This needs spelling out it seems - we hoped we would win (sorry if that offends you) but never expected to. You put that idea into your own head to justify your bashing sessions.

2. Most of us knew that Henman probably wouldn't win, but again what's wrong with getting behind him and hoping? Again no-one said he would win.....your getting hype mixed up with hope.

Yes, yes....we're all aware that you want Sven and Beckham out and that an English manager should be brought in. I asked on another thread who you think should replace them.....I will ask again - which English manager has the credentials in International Football to take charge (Bobby Robson will not do it as he is at Newcastle until death). Any fool with sense can blame it on the manager and Beckham.

Tamezipan tomorrow so look out for the spelling mistakes.

TENNIS
Newk drops a bomb
By pedro
Wednesday, 28 January 2004

In an outburst that is sure to raise a few eyebrows in the change rooms, former tennis ace John Newcombe has questioned the substance of todays tennis professionals.
At the completion of round four of the Australian Open an obviously fired up Newk was back to his old serve-volley best. "What a bunch of soft cocks!" exclaimed Newk. "Most of todays pros are a barrel of spineless poofters, thats males and chicks. They get a little blister on their toe and it's, 'I can't play any more, I've got a sore foot.' Well I'm sick of it."
