Maurice Woods - Rovers Footballer

I have discovered that I am related by marriage to Matt (Maurice) Woods who was Blackburn's centre half (260 apps 1957 - 1963) through an ancestor who like Matt's wife was a Briscoe.

Does any one have any decent photo(s) of him they can email me to stick in my family tree please? I have already got them for Harry Lowe (183 apps Preston 1932 - 1939) and Albert Rimmer (Stanley 1934 - 5).

I do have a photo of him presenting me with a prize - not sure if it was a swimming prize for the Burnley Works & District Swimming League or a Prestige (Burnley) Sports Award. I will look it up but may take a while as I am rather busy - will do my best.

I think he still lives in Manchester somewhere, I was talking to Bryan Douglas a couple of years ago and he said he was still in touch with him, mind you a lot of the 1960 cup final team are no longer with us

Yes thanks for that it was fantastic.

What would the Brentford officials have made of that pitch?

My research tends to confirm this. Matt's wife was Joan Eunice Woods (nee Briscoe) and I'm sad to say a lady of that name died in Manchester in 2005 according to the records.

Thanks for that Barrie

Send me a pm when you find it and I will send you my email address - still only have one picture on the tree at the moment.

Bet Ronaldo wouldn't have been so effective on those pitches, where the likes of Besty, Douglas, Finney, Matthews, Jimmy Mac, used to take them in their stride:D

I have worked out that Matt's wife ranked fourth cousin to me.

Discovered this weekend that my Dad's second cousin is David Gaskell at 16 years and 19 days Manchester United's youngest ever first team player when he appeared in the 1956 Charity Shield final.

He was in their first team squad for 13 years 1956 - 1969 during which he appeared in the 1962 FA Cup Semi Final against Spurs at Hillsborough and the 1963 FA Cup Final victory over Leicester at Wembley.

There's a small picture of Matt Woods in ''Blackburn Rovers - A Complete Record'', but it is little and I don't think it will copy too well. I don't have a scanner, but could take a photo of the page and upload it that way, if it's not the photo you already have (he's doing warm up exercises by the look of it, unless he was into yoga or summat)

Matt was born at Skelmersdale and came to Rovers from Everton in 1956, staying until 1963. He left to go to Australia
He played 307 games , for Rovers and scored three times.

This from' The Essential History of Blackburn Rovers' by Mike Jackman I have a copy for sale.

I have two books on Rovers by Mike Jackman Bob, Blackburn Rovers The Official Encyclopedia, in conjunction with the LET up to the 1991/2 season, and Blackburn Rovers an Illustrated History up to season 2005/6 season both, both tip top

Re: Maurice Woods - Rovers Footballer

Through my Ancestry research I have been in touch recently regularly with the daughter of one of Matt's wife's cousins.

His wife's niece has provided me with some photos - Matt is on one of them.

Matt's wife was a member of a very large family - mostly sisters. She and they have passed away.

I do have a photo of him presenting an award to me at the Burnley & District Sports League - swimming I think. He was playing for Rovers at the time '57/'58 or thereabouts, at the Kierby Hotel or the Sparrowhawk in Burnley. Will try and dig it out this next week - it is amongst a lifetime of photos.
