World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Last week was the seventieth anniversary of the Dunkirk debacle (or miracle, if you so wish). At least those guys returned to these shores with a certain amount of respect, unlike the soccer teams we have been sending abroad every four yearsr so since 1970 (in fact, some years we sent none).
So once again the hype begins but in three weeks time our national team will be returning from South Africa in disgrace. And that is being nice. Some of you may be tempted to fork out on a new TV for the occaision on the promise that you'll get your money back if, by yet another miracle, England manage to win. The companies that are offering this deal and similar have hedged their bets on this and are paying £17K on every £100K of possibile liability on the financial markets. So maybe they've more money than sense. But how much sense do some of you lot have?. Here's your chance to prove the perennial cynic and pessimist wrong. How far do you think England will go and how much do you wish to look an idiot. Place your bets now. |
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
quarter final against brazil
|
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Stick yer vote in then...by the way, ignore the first two options - they don't tie in with the rest. I changed the polling half through but couldn't be arsed changing the first two.

Semi-final - England lose on penalties

Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
To go out in the Quarter finals seems about right, but I would love to be proved absolutely wrong  But I somehow just don't see it. :)
|
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Semi Finals for me, would love to think they could win it but, after watching them in their last two games they'll have to improve a hell of a lot
|
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
I put us to lose in semi finals. with a good draw and plenty of luck i am still hopeful of reaching to final.
|
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Lets hope Sloviena and Algiera are worse than the Mexicans and Japs...then we should get in the quarter finals.
|
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Not good enough to get past the quarters, in my humble opinion, however I sincerely hope I'm proved wrong!!!:o

I have a theory...he got called in for a drugs test and knowing the likely result (positive), he decided to feign a twisted knee beforehand. Exit, stage right.

Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
thinking on it again I do think this is a blow for England.. Terry alongside Ferdinand got us comfortably into this World Cup.. they are used to each other and we have had the results we needed with that central defence...Dawson has replaced Ferdinand in the squad but who will play alongside Terry at center back..Dawson.. King or Upson?..non are what you'd call world class defenders.
|
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
i agree mancie none are world class defenders of those 3, but nor was ferdinand of late, theres no question to me about that, n on that basis i can't see it making much differance.

Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Was surprised to learn from Accy webber "South Aussie" that the US (been nowt in the US media about them) has a team in the competition , seems they beat the Aussie team in a pre-competion friendly .;)
hope this isn't the wrong thread to post this comment in , suppose the moderators should decide if this should be an England only thread and us overseas Accy-webbers should have a World Cup thread of our own  |

opening game in group C - England V USA 15th June 3pm GMT USA are no mugs and are Englands toughest opponents in our group..they beat Spain 2-0 last year in the Conf cup ending Spain's run of 25 matches unbeaten. |
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Well stuck my choice in but the real compition will be between the WAGS. They will be out strutting their stuff in the hope of making money out of it. At least when England leave the Wags go as well.

Watched a bit of their match against the South African Amateurs on SPN yesterday afternoon Joe Cole looked sharp, but Rooney is going to watch his language, gave the ref a real mouth full, he's been warned if he does it on the big stage it will be an early bath and Tealeafs 13/2 bet will look very good, although like Mancie I couldn't back against ENGERLAND
|
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
At 13-2 its quite possible i could back against em, Talented though rooney may be, he his also a total knobhead, n the yanks have already said they will try damned hard to wind him up, which aint that difficult. so may be worth a tenner, Those who say they can't back against em, i say - since 66 what they ever done fer you? apart from let ya down.

Did you see England's performance last night? The word pathetic would be an understatement. I wonder exactly what the pre-game pep talk will be like in the changing rooms at 7pm on saturday night. Maybe something like this: USA Manager: Right...c'omon you guys...think what these Limey bastards have done to the coast of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, & Florida...think of 1776..1812..think of the 1950 World Cup...they're there for the taking..etc..etc..etc. England Manager: (Capellio - for it is he): Hey...Rooney..takea da kabab outta ya gobba. Rooney: F off..etc..etc..etc. |
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
I did the optomistic thing and voted for an England win ... and why not? It's possible. And I don't think the lack of form in the friendlies is anything to go by. The guys will take it to a higher level when the real games begin. Italy could do it again ... but they struggled in the last World Cup and should have lost to the Aussies. France, I don't think so. Germany could win, they are always tough. Spain have the talent. Netherlands are powerful up front, but iffy at the back ... Argentina have a great team, but Maradona is quite possible off his rocker, and will probably screw things up ... all in all, anyone of the top eight teams can do it. And I wouldn't write off the US; they have some solid players. Donovan didn't look out of place in the Premier League when he played for Everton.
I managed to predict the winner of the Stanley Cup (Chicago Blackhawks in six games); so, hopefully, I'm on a roll with my predictions.:D |

Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Congratulations, then to Cashy, Harwood Red and Spuggie, for accurately predicting England’s inglorious exit from the World Cup at only the second hurdle. This was not a particularly difficult forecast - we were lucky to get beyond the group stage - and as such I hope you made a small investment at the bookmakers in order to get some free money in return.
As for the rest of you – may I respectfully suggest that you all arrange a visit to your GP as soon as possible. You are all suffering from delusions of the world about you and varying doses of medication are obviously necessary. In the extreme cases - those who somehow believed that England would win the cup – then sectioning in a madhouse and a long course of straitjacket treatment is probably the only remedy. Meanwhile, our team – that pathetic band of brothers - shall now return from Africa in the knowledge that their expedition has resulted in the biggest national embarrassment on the part of Englishmen there since the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879. The German game has been England’s worse result since our participation began in the World Cup. If our so-called palyers have any sense of honour, they will alter their uniform of M&S grey suits to yellow suits and replace the Three Lions with three little pussy cats. No doubt there will be a phalanx of police guards to meet them at Heathrow Aerodrome. I can only hope that amongst those policemen will be members of the City of London’s serious fraud squad ready to arrest the entire team for the crime of obtaining money by false pretence (and possibly high treason). As for the Italian, he should not be allowed to pass immigration but instead should be relieved of his passport in order for the stamp ‘Persona Non Grata’ to be clearly marked within. He should then be placed on the next available flight to Bologna or wherever, never to return to these sacred shores. Whatever else happens, let us just make sure that these scoundrels are never again let loose in England colours. They successively failed to beat a motley collection of ex-colonial Sunday afternoon-in-the-park footballers, camel herdsmen and then just managed a win against a country hardly larger in size and population than that of the Borough of Hyndburn and which did not even exist some fifteen years ago (and which I am unable to locate on any map). Once again, it’s back to the drawing board. I have only one firm prediction and it is this – the Englishmen who will one day lift the World Cup are not yet born. |
Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
now the if onlys start .. if rooney was fully fit, if that goal had have counted, if crouch had come on instead of heskey ....:D:D:D

Kinda sums up one of the things thats wrong in our country...he gets paid how much??....and he honestly thinks that!! We need to take a ruddy great Machette to the level of payments made to premier league footballers! Best Regards - Taggy |

Still, there may be some good news. The only benefit made from the England World Cup campaign has been that of the South African and Chinese economies (the former through visiting fans, the latter through through the export of St Georges Flags). I wonder, therfore, if there is not a recyling business opportunity to be made with the latter. Surely some enterprising person can come up with some ideas?

Yeah...things are funny. I've switched over to Film4 and on there is 'The Truman Show'..which I've seen before but which I sometimes get confused with' Groundhog Day'. With either, the theme is roughly the same - and that is the script played over and over again so that everyone knows what the end result will be. Just like the England football team - a different cast, same plot and we all know the ending - never happy.

Re: World Cup England - Place yer bets!
Anyway, maybe starting next week we could have a Euro Tri-Cup...us, the Frogs and the Eye-Ties...maybe with the grand final two weeks today with a winners trophy of 'The Best of the Worst'.

Its gonna be interesting in a years plus time, when the full effects of Government cuts start to hit us all, if the general public will support the ridiculous financial packages put in place for our "Premier"?...footballers and Managers. On a performance point...surely, surely itstime now to put a cap of the number of foriegn players each team can field!...I mean a significant cap though...one which states that perhaps 75% of players should be from these shores. Then perhaps we can develope strong national teams again, whilst still benefitting from the skills that some top clas foreign players can bring! Best Regards - Taggy |
