I do hope that we will have none of this nonsense at the Crown next season, or at any other English football stadium for that matter (Scotland is different - they may be useful there to drown out the noise of any bagpipes and the whingeing noises of drunken Jocks).

I don't have the time to watch matches on TV, so I've been banking on listening to the radio. I have now stopped that because I have not been able to cope with the incessant noise. Those idiots in South Africa should be reminded that it is the World Cup in South Africa, not the World Cup of South Africa.

Quite simply, it is an absolute disgrace and the sooner this noise is stopped the better. It offers no entertainment nor in any way adds to the atmosphere but succeeds only in diminishing the concentration of the players with the result that so far, this has been the worst World Cup in my memory - and I go back a few years.

Maybe they are the mating calls of the 'primitive herd'/football fanatics :D

Wildebeest African Gnu | Blue and Black Wildebeest pictures
Blue Wildebeest or Gnu
The most common species found in Southern Africa.
Wildebeest, or gnus are noisy. They constantly emit low moans and if disturbed, snort explosively.

The sound levels from each microphone around the ground can be changed individually in the Audio Suite - each microphone, or group of microphones, has a seperate volume control.

The broadcast is no doubt controlled by SABC, but surely negotiations could be attempted.

I have been to a match in Cape Town - at the old Green Point stadium - Kaiser Chiefs v Somebody or other - poor standard and only a few trumpets, not the horrible cacophony that we are being subjected to.

Does anyone out there have a quiet cave I can borrow for the duration?

I agree with you Margaret, on Wimbledon. I'd rather watch paint dry than watch tennis. Hopefully we're still in the World Cup, and then Wimbledon can be totally ignored.

My 'council cave' at the end of a culdesac is a sports free zone.
The 'football field' opposite rarely sees any balls, and the TV is off for 95% of the time.

well theyre banned from Wimbledon and from the Henley Regatta .. but the Cricket is leaving it up to the grounds whether to ban them or not ...

BBC Sport - Tennis - Wimbledon crackdown on vuvuzelas

and heres some facts about em ...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/10312794.stm

the scary bit being this ..

Has the controversy affected sales?

On the contrary. Neil van Schalkwyk says his firm has sold 1.5m vuvuzelas in Europe since October and expects sales of up to 20 million rand ($2.6m; £1.7m) over the course of the tournament.

Brandon Bernardo of the vuvuzela.co.za website told Reuters news agency they could churn out at least 10,000 instruments a day. "We're completely sold out," he said.

Furthermore, a Dutch designer firm has released a Vuvuzela 2010 app. According to its website, they have had 750,000 downloads of the application.

Even without the World Cup, South Africa's vuvuzela industry is said to be worth around 50 million rand ($6.45m; £4.4m).

Re: BBC receive 545 complaints ..

Whatever its classed as, it is absolutely atrocious. I've avoided quite a few games because it is so aggravating.

A Quick definition :- Loud & obnoxious (like some on here :D :D :D allegedly)

OR

Background – vuvuzela horn

The vuvuzela is said to be based on the Kudu horn, a tribal instrument used to summon villagers to meetings. Originally made of tin, the vuvuzela rose to popularity in South Africa at football matches in the late 1990s. Its fate was sealed in 2001, when South-African-based company Masincedane Sport began to mass-produce a plastic version, thereby making it essential kit for football supporters across the country.
The origin of the word vuvuzela is uncertain. Some argue that it originates from the Zulu for 'making a loud noise'. Others maintain it relates to township slang for the word 'shower', because it 'showers people with music'(!). The announcement in 2004 that South Africa would host the 2010 World Cup gave the vuvuzela a massive boost, securing the word itself a place in the dictionary.

And not a lot of people knew that ..................... until now ;)
