Church Cricket Club
Amazing, in'it! Here is Church, currently residing at the top of the Lancashire League and on form to win .How many threads do we find posted on here? 10? 20? No....zero. I recall lots of threads on that apology of a footy team called England (total crap from start to premature but not unexpected finish)....more nonsense about Rovers (why bother)....but nowt at all about Church.
Why is this? Is is possibly because Church have quietly just got on with the job of winning without all the hype and drivel that goes with failed footy teams? Please advise, someone. P.S. here's an omen....last time Church won the league was in the 1962 season, the last full season for the old Stanley....shortly after, the receivers were called in. Lets just hope that in Stanleys first season as Pro's, the books will have been balanced (probably not, if they use the same accountants as HBC) |
Re: Church Cricket Club
Accrington messageboard.. Church CC is in hmmm .... is it in Accy?
OK a little pedantic.. but thats what your looking for anyways :) |

I must say, that reveries apart “with is both to be expected and accepted on all parts” Not only are Church CC doing well, they have an history that has survive, where Stanley is reborn and not yet secure. Again reveries apart, they both should be supported and applauded for there efforts…Something to be proud of perhaps……….. |
Re: Church Cricket Club
well wot can i say , church cc as far as i can remember, have not been to bad a club, i have in the past been known to watch emmanuel c/c up new lane & i like cricket , so please dont knock our good cricket team, come on church up you brilliant lads yeah//
|
Re: Church Cricket Club
Mez... Who is knocking anyone? I cant see anyone knocking any cricket team...Why are you sayong that? In fact all I can see is praise.....
|
Re: Church Cricket Club
hmmm.. you mean they still play cricket even though pubs can open all sunday afternoon now?? :)
|
Re: Church Cricket Club
oops i do apologise i didnt mean to knock our great church cricket team sorry//
|
Re: Church Cricket Club
You didn't Mez.....You where perhaps warning others in advance. I have aft to say Roy, my balling is far better after I come out of the pub than it ever was before I go in. Going to the pub before a match allows you to see the wicket in a much larger perspective, that said they do tend to move around a bit more and the out field just disappear….lol

Re: Church Cricket Club
mez your losing me :) you didnt knock them and niether did anyone else. i was asking why your telling others not to knock them when they havent..it seemed strange when everyone was praising them thats all :)

Re: Church Cricket Club
I've watched both Accrington and Church this year and the standard of cricket played by Church is excellent, I hope they can hold on because the league has been a bit predictable over the past few years.
By the way Accrington play Church on 15th August and I'm sure there will be a big crowd rain permitting so why not get up to Accy's ground and watch. |
Re: Church Cricket Club
Yeah...it's cracking stuff. I hope everyone is going over to see Church sort out Burnley, big time, on Sunday....shame I won't be there.

Re: Church Cricket Club
Congratulation are due it seems.
The reason there aren't any threads apart from this one is probably due to the fact that the number of people interested in this sport is dwindling both nationally and locally. My brothers and I played when we were younger, one of us for Lancashire Schoolboys with Flintoff, but none of us are really that bothered with it these days......I think that attitude is mirrored in the majority of people of my generation. Also....we have Accy, Enfield and Rishton in the area - cricket fans that there are in the area (and who peruse these forums) may not 'support/follow' Church. I'm not having a go....just stating why the apparent apathy maybe present. MY respect and good wishes are always with our sportsmen and women whether at a local/national or international level. |
Re: Church Cricket Club
How did it go today. Any comments.

Re: Church Cricket Club
Accrington was called off so I presume there was no play at Church too.

Re: Church Cricket Club
Cheers Bagpuss, I'll keep an eye open.

Re: Church Cricket Club
Here is the info you have been waiting for. Church continue to fly the flag for Hyndburn:
Church extend lead Church professional Ruwin Peiris hit 72 in his sides 30 run win at Burnley Church extended their lead at the top of the Lancashire League table with a 30 run win at Burnley in one of only two matches to be played due to rain. Professional Ruwin Peiris laid the foundations for the victory at Turf Moor by hitting 72 out of his sides 163-8 in a match reduced to 26 overs a side after mopping up operations allowed the match to start just before 4.30pm. The Sri Lankan hit five boundaries and three sixes before being bowled by Steven Holden. Mark Aspin also hit 40 in a 2nd wicket stand of 65 with his professional, who then went on to dominate the rest of the innings with no other batsman making double figures as Church chased the runs. Gareth Halley (3-31) and professional Kerry Jeremy (3-73) took three wickets each for Burnley. Needing nearly seven runs an over for victory, the home side made a slow start in reply with openers Daniel Pickup and Michael Kelly unable to penetrate the field with any regularity. Pickup was first out for 20 with the score on 38, stumped by Sam Tucker off Andrew Bentley. Jonathan Clare was then run out going for a suicidal second run off his first ball. Kelly and skipper Ben Law put on 59 for the 3rd wicket but Peiris dismissed them both. Kelly hit five fours and a six in making 46 and Law hit two fours and two sixes in his 48 as Burnley were never able to match the league leaders' run rate, but they picked up three batting points in scoring 133-7. Peiris finished with 3-28. |

Re: Church Cricket Club
Talking of sporting achievements from Church, let's not forget Church FC. They actually reached the quarter-final of the FA Cup in in 1885 before being beaten 1-0 by Old Carthusians.

Re: Church Cricket Club
Talking of cricket, when we were over in Baxenden recently we had arranged to meet an old schoolgirl friend of mine with whom I had managed to get in touch through the St. John's (Bash) church website. She was my first 'love' when I was 6 years old and I hadn't seen her for fifty years. We met her and her husband at the church for lunch and it turns out that her husband used to play for Accrington and was in the team when they won some shield or other. Excuse my ignorance I do not know which shield it was. He will be in his early sixties now I would think. His name is Jim Eland and from what I can gather he was quite a player in his day. Any of his old team-mates on this site?

Re: Church Cricket Club
I heard a rumour today that Haslingden watered the wicket so there could be no result in what was being billed as the title decider, both teams got three points for a draw leaving Church three points behind with only a couple of games to go.
I didn't believe this but when you look at all the other games this weekend played to a finish it does make you wonder if a bit of alleged doctoring of the pitch, (cheating some may say), did occur. |
Re: Church Cricket Club
We heard the same story. Apparently Church wanted to go ahead and play the match; Haslingden said no, the umpires were called in & they said no to the match. Not very nice, is it?
|
Re: Church Cricket Club
The above situation is one of the main reasons why I cant get into Cricket that much. It just seems like such a farce that a match cant be played because of the weather/condition of the pitch - where is the sport in spending four days playing yourself into a position from where you can easily win on the fifth day only to have it taken away from you by a bit of drizzle? I know that Lancashire League is a one-day format so why not just play the match when conditions are better?
|
Re: Church Cricket Club
Cricket and Lancashire are inseparable. I have always loved cricket (you may say that I had no choice from my earliest years, my name being Pendergast). It is a game with science and subtlety, and we can be so proud of having such great local teams. My mother's best friend is 84 now, and never misses a Church match if she can help it. I'm cheering for Church, and of course for Lancashire!
