Rugby... never popular in Accy?

I've recently joined my university girls rugby team and I was saying to the girls how I'd never even seen a game, never mind knowing the rules.

Has rugby never been popular at home?

Oh and it's rugby union by the way. Not sure what the difference is between union and league, so if anyone wants to explain then that would be cool too!

Re: Rugby... never popular in Accy?

Rugby is THE game in these parts, Blazey. Warrington (won the 2009 cup), Widnes, Wigan and St Helens are THE teams but it's Rugby League.

My late husband played Rugby Union, during and after his time in the RAF, and the only difference I'm sure about is that Union has 15 players while League has 13. Both, to me, are violent games, my husband had a dislocated finger, a knocked-out tooth and a broken leg in his playing time, that always end up with very bawdy songs in the clubhouse bar. :D

Enjoy! ;)

Yes Accrington has a rugby league team.

Accrington Wildcats and another team for u18's slips my mind.

Ah I didn't realise the whole class difference thing between league and union, that is quite interesting.

I've already been punched in the face :D

Re: Rugby... never popular in Accy?

I can't believe people gave me bad rep for 1. trying a new sport and 2. for saying I had been punched in the face.

Not that I need to JUSTIFY it, but the punch in the face was accidental as a result of a bad collision. So I don't know the rules perfectly, so what? They don't make you learn to recite the rule book before you play sports at school. It's called having fun.

Anyway, I made it on to the first team. Thanks for all the information.

Now bad karma is mean, no need for that. Congrats on making the 1st 15, not my cup of tea but - each to his/her own.

Boris Wignall tried to introduce Union to AGS about '53, we hated it, we just wanted to play football, or most of us did. Unfortunately katex came up with a very embarrassing photo of that era - after I had spent my life telling my lads that football was the game.

never had much interest for a game where you run forwards only to throw somthing backwards then huddle up and grope each others balls and sniff each others farts .

or was our gym teacher showing us wrong ?

It's a very fast-thinking game I've found. I'd never seen or played a game before and just thought I'd give it a try. The girls are some of the most amazing friends I've made so far at uni and I absolutely love the sport itself. Much more to it than I thought from catching glimpses of it on the telly. Much more tactical and it's interestingly based around the human body.

I already feel like I've been playing for ages!

not knocking you playing it i just think its a pointless game , i remember playing it myself and yes you have to be quick thinking especially if you dont want teh whole of the opposition on top of you which is very difficult when also trying to pinpoint somone to throw the ball to before you get flattened lol

mind you iv played hockey against girls and girls are evil with them sticks but i dread to think what dammage women rugby players could do to a bloke with long nails in a scrum

i learned a long time ago that playing women at sports is only advisable with such sports as snakes and ladders and tidlywinks or basically anything that cant be fashioned into a weapon to hit or sever your balls

for some reason the idea of "ladies" playing Rugby brings to mind a mental image of pit ponies , much prefer to watch women athletes who wear dresses and frilly panties like Serena and Venus Williams. ;) ;)

Re: Rugby... never popular in Accy?

Rugby is a thug's game played by gentlemen (and ladies so it seems), football is a gentleman's game played by thugs. So I'm told.

Footballers spend 90 minutes pretending to be injured, rugby players spend 80 minutes pretending not to be injured.

Not watched much rugby - so I cannot explain the differences! But I do enjoy it when it's on TV. Not got a team apart from the national(s) as Blackburn is devoid of a pro team. Keep it up, if it makes you happy; nothing else matters =)

There is a great amount of respect enforced in rugby, for your team and the opposition. It's one of the fundamental aspects of the rules that is drilled into young players and I think it is something that exists in football but with more of the attitude is 'just don't get caught' or whatever you want to see it as. You don't have much time to think about playing dirty in rugby because you're having to think so hard all the time to get that ball where it needs to be that you just don't think about slowing the game down with bad sportsmanship.

As for pretending not to be injured, I clashed heads with someone on wednesday and took an elbow to the head at the same time, was really painful, but I was straight back up again to fill the gap in the defense, so I can certainly see where you are coming from, but it's again mostly because there just is no time for feeling sorry for yourself haha.

It's quite amusing because I started seeing my boyfriend around the same time I started playing rugby, so I've spent our relationship covered in bruises and scratches. I look like I've been beaten some weeks! I currently have the bruises from fingertips left on my arm which are visible if I'm wearing a tshirt and we're always making jokes about it to our friends. I love the game though so it is worth the odd bruise.

I have to say, as a 20yr old who hasn't played competitive sport since school, and used to only compete in athletic events, it's refreshing to play a team sport that requires so much trust and skill and it's great to be trying something completely new.

I'm begining to think the original poster really needs to start looking for psychological help , any woman/female who thinks it's 'trendy' to appear in public with bruises (battle scars etc.) and makes jokes about looking as if she has been beaten/battered surely has never been in an abusive relationship , or maybe she has and has been conditioned to believe its normal for a woman to look like she has been kicked from here to kingdom come ...and no damage done . I'm sure your new boyfriend feels real proud walking out with you covered in bruises where do you spend your evenings , walking up and down Rothsay Rd. up Shadsworth :( :(
