Greatest British Musician?
OK they were all part of great million selling bands - but who was the best at their craft?
Im going for Moon - always was and always will be the best drummer of all time in my opinion. revolutionised rock drumming RIP Keith 'Mental' Moon |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
OK I voted On Moon because I agree but I think you've left a few out there! Edge??? Phil Collins??? Slash???
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
ok the name of the thread is greatest BRITISH musician:
-Edge - irish!! -Slash - yank!! -Phil Collins - Martian!!! lol i just dont think Phil Collins even compares to anyone else on that list, cant stand the guy. Plus he is now an official US citizen, claiming that he will only come back to the land of hope and glory if Tories get back in power... ...no one wants that; help society, Vote New Labour |

OK Elton John then! Phil Collins is one of the best musicians around BTW IMHO ;) |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
ok ok everyone to there own, but shouldnt it be past tense for Phil Collins?
as in "phil collins WAS one of the best musicians around..."? when was the last time he did any work? ...you can tell hes a torie haha |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Pete Townsend and his theatricals on the guitar. No one comes close well may be Hendrix.
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Actually, the Edge is English as are his whole family. Whilst he has lived in Ireland on and off for years he is still a British citizen, not Irish.
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
for my money - eric clapton.:)

i have gone for eric clapton... i love the way you look tonight

Re: Greatest British Musician?
Eric Clapton is an excellent musician. Though on balance I have to say that I think Brian May was/is a superb guitarist. There are few about that could match him.

Re: Greatest British Musician?
I'd probably give it to John Lennon with Ginger from the Wildhearts a close runner up.Then maybe mutley mclad...wahey lol
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Can't believe i forgot to mention John Entwistle - he played the who's bass like lead guitar and was arguably the best bass player in British music! (aside from Level 42 snigger snigger)
so sorry man! |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
What about Mark Knopfler?

Re: Greatest British Musician?
What no Joe Strummer. A scandal. This man influenced every one on the list that followed and the whole band explosion thing right now points back to the Clash... Forget Profumo, this is BIGGER!!
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
I am a big fan of The Clash and Joe Strummer and believe he was one of the few people who knew the true essence of punk.(RIP Joe :( )
However I fail to see how he could have influenced anyone on the list apart from maybe Noel Gallagher - as they all started their careers way before Joe Strummer's time. |

Brian May helped support Joe's wife with the Gorillas appeal gig and was a friend and admirer of Joe. And last week Bob Dylan who likes the Clash [and its his sons favourite band] opened up his encores with London Calling! He is a friend of Mick Jones [Clash] and at some point Mick may go in to the studio with Dylan to do some recording. Daltry, Townsend, May [and thats just the ones you put up!] plus Dylan. If there was any justice Joe would be on that list. |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
so they were friends and liked each others songs? so what!
theres a difference between admiration and inspiration you know. aside from that, who would you take out of the poll to fit Joe in? the polls on here only allow 10 maximum options. |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
I'd have included Lemmy from Motorhead in that list. He's been playing in well known bands since the early 60s, he's probably influenced almost everyone who's into very heavy metal and he still spends most of his time on the road touring.
From the list though, I'd agree with you. Keith Moon was just incredable to watch. |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Tommy Aldridge, but I have no idea what nationality he is!
Poo, another Yank, never mind. |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Poo indeed!
Who is he anyway? |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
A drummer. I've seen him play at a few Whitesnake gigs. Truely awesome.
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Ok, thanks for that, I would never have known him otherwise.
As for drummer's Roger Taylor from Queen tops my list! For drummer's at least. |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
The only problem with polls like this is that they tend to concentrate on the main stream (which is of course unavoidable), however there are many great bands and atrists knocking about.
My all time fav and much underated band would have to be Marillion! Fantastic live act. Saw them at the Aylesbury Civic 2 weeks ago... Excellent! |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
I really must mention Alan Leach formerly of Shed Seven, ironically another drummer - never realised I had a thing about drummers previously!
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Hmmm, try out the bloke from Def Lepard!
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Too true, Rick Allen. He was good before, but how good must he be now. How many tragedies can one band go through?
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Indeed it was a tradgedy. I had no idea that they had been through more!
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
Their guitarist Steve Clark died in 1991 due to alcholism.
|
Re: Greatest British Musician?
That is a tradgedy, I had no idea.
Though if you want a true musical tradgedy listen to an Oasis album! Terrible noise! |

Re: Greatest British Musician?
Still can't vote. Too much aged guitar sludge with too little musical talent. Obviously John Lennon excepted.
Oasis, the modern prototype of guitar sludge though with the last 2 albums they have tried desperatley to get away from that. Ray Davies, Van Morrison, Bowie, Strummer are all way ahead of most of them and thats just a quick list. I don't think 6 or 7 of them come close to the top 30 Britsish Musicians. |
Re: Greatest British Musician?
look, fusspot;
i tried to put together a relatively wide range of british rockers - from the glam rock of T-Rex to the heavy metal of Led Zep to modernish rockers oasis. obviously everyones tastes arent gonna be accounted for. why cant you just vote from the ones on the list, it aint gonna change so if you wanna make your own poll, be my guest!! tisk |
