Greatest Lyric?
The Nation's Greatest Lyric on one of the satellite music channels not long ago determined U2's "One" as the greatest lyric.
What's your personal favourite? Feel free to explain why or how they relate to you. For me, it's The Smiths - "The Queen Is Dead" "Farewell to this lands cheerless marshes hemmed in like a boar between arches her very Lowness with a head in a sling I'm truly sorry - but it sounds like a wonderful thing dear Charles, don't you ever crave to appear on the front of the Daily Mail dressed in your Mother's bridal veil?" Closely followed by The Masterplan by Oasis. |
Re: Greatest Lyric?
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear: o clouds unfold! Bring me my chariots of fire! I will not cease from metal fight; Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land. Gets me every time. Hairs on the back of my neck stand up, eyes get just the hint of a tear, or perhaps it's a speck of dust. |
Re: Greatest Lyric?
Also Heroes by David Bowie, does the trick too.

Re: Greatest Lyric?
One of my favourites, but got to admit somber lyrics has got to be 'The Smiths' 'Theres a light that never goes out':) Morrissey at his very best
Take me out tonightWhere there's music and there's peopleAnd they're young and aliveDriving in your carI never never want to go homeBecause I haven't got oneAnymore Take me out tonightBecause I want to see people and IWant to see lifeDriving in your carOh, please don't drop me homeBecause it's not my home, it's their Home, and I'm welcome no more And if a double-decker busCrashes into usTo die by your sideIs such a heavenly way to dieAnd if a ten-ton truckKills the both of usTo die by your sideWell, the pleasure - the privilege is mine Take me out tonightTake me anywhere, I don't careI don't care, I don't careAnd in the darkened underpassI thought Oh God, my chance has come at last (But then a strange fear gripped me and IJust couldn't ask) Take me out tonightOh, take me anywhere, I don't careI don't care, I don't careDriving in your carI never never want to go homeBecause I haven't got one, da ...Oh, I haven't got one And if a double-decker busCrashes into usTo die by your sideIs such a heavenly way to dieAnd if a ten-ton truckKills the both of usTo die by your sideWell, the pleasure - the privilege is mine Oh, There Is A Light And It Never Goes OutThere Is A Light And It Never Goes OutThere Is A Light And It Never Goes OutThere Is A Light And It Never Goes OutThere Is A Light And It Never Goes OutThere Is A Light And It Never Goes OutThere Is A Light And It Never Goes OutThere Is A Light And It Never Goes OutThere Is A Light And It Never Goes Out |
Re: Greatest Lyric?
Oops Smiths again..very sombre stuff but like alot of Morrisey lyrics the first time I heard them it made me laugh:
I KNOW ITS OVER - Smiths I know it's over and it never really began but in my heart it was so real and you even spoke to me and said: "If you're so funny then why are you on your own tonight? and if you're so clever then why are you on your own tonight? if you're so very entertaining then why are you on your own tonight? if you're so very good looking why do you sleep alone tonight? I know because tonight is just like any other night that's why you're on your own tonight with your triumphs and your charms while they are in each other's arms" |

Re: Greatest Lyric?
Morrissey? Ha ha ha! Miserable, self-pitying, introspective, navel-gazing, bat droppings!!
"Tutti fruitti, old rudi, tutti fruitti old rudi, awopbopaloobopalopbamboom!" Now, that's poetry, that's ROCK 'N' ROLL!!! |
Re: Greatest Lyric?
If your as soppy as me ...Then this is my choice
.................................................. ................ First Time Ever I Saw Your Face The first time ever I saw your face I thought the sun rose in your eyes And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave To the dark and the empty skies, my love, To the dark and the empty skies. The first time ever I kissed your mouth And felt your heart beat close to mine Like the trembling heart of a captive bird That was there at my command, my love That was there at my command. And the first time ever I lay with you I felt your heart so close to mine And I knew our joy would fill the earth And last till the end of time my love It would last till the end of time my love The first time ever I saw your face, your face, your face, your face .................................................. .......... i realy think that song sums up my last 45 years... |
Re: Greatest Lyric?
There's loads but one song that never fails to prick the hairs on the back of neck is:
She took my hand and said "Let's go together" "You and me against the world" And so we stuck it out through still and stormy weather And so we tumbled down the years I took her hand and said "Let's go together" Just you and me against the world Let's go together Stay together We'll tumble down the years And we'll come to find the key behind it all We never stopped to see if we were still in step We never checked each other's eyes To see who lived in there behind them And down the years we disappeared Let's go together Say no together We'll tumble down the years Let's try together Let's lie together We'll tumble down the years And though we never found the key behind it all I think we came to know the meaning of the fall Let's go together We said "forever" You and me against the world Hold on together And damn the river We'll tumble down the years We'll tumble down the years We'll tumble down the years |

We're having a gang bang
We're having a ball We're having a gang bang Against the wall We'd like you to join us It's part of the fun! Oh a gang bang is the thing to do But it takes more than one Black Lace. Class. Especially when brought to life in the film 'Rita, Sue and Bob Too'.:D |
