Best Drummers??

We've had a discussion on guitarists how about the best drummers:)

My number 1 has to go with Travis from Blink182 with them spectacular drum solo's of his.I've got one on DVD where he records at 1216 Beats per minuite. In some of thier concerts he has also bee fixed inside one of them gyroscope thing whilst playing. Also I must not forget the late great Phil De Frietas from Echo & the Bunnymen who met with a nasty accident on his motorbike a number of years ago.

Re: Best Drummers??

Stephen Morris of Joy Division and New Order.. no long bashing solo's but in the early days most of JD/NO tracks had his melodic intro's.. great percussionist

Honourable mentions to former Icicle Work Chris Sharrock and current Icicle Work Matthew Priest, and Sparks Dinky Diamond for having a good name!

I think Steve White is also a brilliant drummer, he has drummed for Paul Weller in Style Council and on Paul Weller's solo work for 23 years.

Earl Palmer the drummer of the 40's/50's records and onwards. Drummed sessions for artists as diverse as Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochran, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Duane Eddy, Frank Sinatra, the Monkees, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Otis, Neil Young and Elvis Costello etc.

A prog rock dinosaur drummer is just about the last sort of skin-basher I'd vote for! As Shakey quite rightly says, Earl Palmer was a highly versatile drummer who was much in demand in the 50's/60's. Apart from the artists he mentions, he also played on a whole host of classic rhythm & blues records by people you've never heard of. The point about him was, he didn't play at 200 beats per minute, or attack the kit like he was building a garden shed - instead, he followed the classic New Orleans tradition of playing just behind the beat, thus endowing his playing with an innate sense of funkiness and "swing".

OK, maybe I did jump to conclusions and you have heard of the R&B artists whose records ole Earl beat the skins on. So, what do you reckon to Smiley Lewis, Roy Montrell, Amos Milburn, Jimmy Beasley, Shirley & Lee, Big T Tyler and Don & Dewey?

You don't know what you're missing. However, if you want to hear a more accessible example of Mr Palmer's drumming, listen to Eddie Cochran's "Somethin' Else". Beats the Sex Pistols' version by a country mile. Paul Cook, eat yer heart out.

Surely, we are judging people on artistic merit, rather than personality traits?

If you are going to bring the latter into the equation, then I would suggest, Shakey, that you are on very dodgy ground indeed, considering that your tastes include a pretentious prat like Morrissey!

Some bloke called Paul Hammond played some great drumming on a couple of Atomic Rooster albums in the early 70's,then seemed to vanish.Mick Woodmansey, who played in Bowies Spiders From Mars was also top notch at his profession.

Nah, me and Mozzer are best mates, really. Often have a laugh and pint together at the Feathers, just by Southern Cemetery Gates. ;)

Just thought of another drummer for the hall of fame - D.J. Fontana - played on all the early Elvis stuff from 1954 onwards and still going strong today. I saw him at House of the Blues on Sunset Strip in 1995 and he was really impressive.

No one has mentioned Ossie's very own Ged Lynch, now whilst I admit he's not the best in the world he HAS gone a long way from playing in the Golden Cross many years ago to being the drummer with Black Grape then progressing to emmulating his hero Manu Katchu by being Peter Gabriel's drummer on his last world tour. The Golden Cross must seem a LONG way away now.
