Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
I've just watched BBC's Arena programme on Pete Doherty.
There he was smacked up to the eyeballs, drawing in a book with his own blood from a syringe. Feted as the poetic voice for the new centuries youth. A modern day Baudelaire. Proust with needle tracked arms, and a silly hat. Interviewer-'What was it like in prison, the last time you were in?' Doherty-'It was like a prison.' Very profound. I wanted against my better judgement to like him, and his band. They aren't bad, but then again they aren't any better than a lot of other indie bands around. Musically they reminded me of a provincal sixthform band's take on punk, circa 1979. Slightly missing the point, and the beat. I like boundaries being pushed, but this man is no Thin White Duke, no Hendrix or Joplin, who used narcotics to push their creativity over the edge and into the abyss. Most of their audience seemed fairly straight. Concert goers who had followed his media life in the tabloids, and thought it was too good an opportunity to miss what could always be his last concert if he highballed just a bit too far. The press just seem to write about him because in a manufactured boyband world he is relatively bad, and being engaged to Kate Moss does at least make the stories more photogenic to look at. But if you are going to die young and live forever you really need a strong body of work to back up your claim to infamy. It would also help if you were pretty, rather than looking like an anemic Bushbaby. Am I getting old, and just don't recognise his talent, or am I right in thinking he's all hype and no substance? Will anybody even care in five years time, and did Arena chose the wrong singing junkie to focus on? |

This link is for the Newsnight Interview for those like me, who have no idea who the guy is. The question I have to ask is if someone can't stand on there own two feet, how are we to look up at them.

I believe if you are given a talent or even develop one in later life you should use it to better the lives of others, I’m not saying people shouldn’t profit from it either. But people like this just take the **** in my opinion, what image does this present to anyone let alone those who are impressionable. Got to agree with the fairy on this one.......:)

Rindy I am absolutely appalled that you could stoop so low as to be so offensive to anemic bushbabies! What have they ever done to you that you should lump them in with the likes of Pete Doherty? :)
His main talent seems to be getting stoned out of his tiny mind and feeling badly done to. |

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
Awww he is kinda cute :D
Though the big black saucers are reminiscent of Dohertys eyes when he's stoned out his tree. The bushbaby is just better looking ;) |
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
I thought it was very crass of the BBC to show the program last night. I saw the trailer for it after the news which showed the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph. Just think millions died to give wonkers like that the chance to make a complete arse of their lives and then get the BBC to pay him money for it. Even more annoying is that money has come from us. The media in this country has a lot to answer for when it comes to the crap state of the country we live in. Rant over

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
He's an amazing songwriter when he's on the straight and narrow and an amazing performer.
When he's on the skag though he's just a mess & the most distasteful character imaginable. The Libertines were a truly great band of the 21st Century & he was part of that. His acheivments shouldn't be disregarded as the result of a 'talentless smackhead'. I hope he gets sorted out and gets back writing with Carl Barat & do this bland music scene a huge favour. |

Pleasant as ever Blackburn Raver, and the abusive private message was really mature.
Anyway, Pete Doherty is not anaemic. He's coming off the skag & back writing good songs. |

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
I can't undersatand how this guy keeps getting away with being smacked up all the time, he keeps being taken to court but keeps walking away, its just barmy. As one who grew up in the swinging sisties, with uppers and downers, black bombers and grass, I can honestly say that I have never been tempted to use any drugs what-so-ever, I could do enough damage to my body with fags and ale without drugs. I never have been able to understand why people take drugs just for kicks, its bad enough when in later life you have to pump numerous prescribed drugs into your body just to keep you alive, I should know, my own repeat monthly list consist of 15 differant items just to keep me on the straight and narrow

I can't undersatand how this guy keeps getting away with being smacked up all the time, he keeps being taken to court but keeps walking away, its just barmy.----------------------------------------------------------------------- -well normally people tend to get away with criminal offences through Grassing others, its a kind of reward! that may be the answer?
|
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
Well he doesn't 'keep getting away with it'
He's in a court ordered rehab programme at the moment within which he gets checked every week to see if he's taken any illegal substances. If he has then it's straight off to jail for him. It annoys me that people who cheered for The Beatles or The Doors or The Pistols way back when moan and groan about Pete Doherty's past drug habits - he is this generation's Sid Vicous, just a lot smarter. |

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
The methodone stuff is a political issue, so I'm not going to drag that up in here, but what I meant with the Sid Vicous comparison is that he is seen as a figurehead by thousands in this country & has wrongly got himself caught up in a dirty world.
He does have musical talent, a whole lot of it, but it's hard to see it in the tabloid's headlines. |
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
He hasn't got an ounce of talent but he's a "figurehead" because he acts like a pratt and, sadly, in modern day Britain, that's a quality which is admired by certain sections of the population (which is why the Gallaghers and the Sex Pistols before them became so popular).
|
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
The reason why The Sex Pistols, Oasis & The Libertines became so popular was bacause of their honest & fresh attitudes to music rising above the popmous over inflated prog rock, radioheads and coldplays of this world.
I'm sorry you think that way Wynonie but The Libertines' first album 'Up The Bracket' and their brilliant gigs were the reasons why Doherty was thrown into stardom, not because of his tabloid antics. Pete Doherty started using after Up The Bracket went massive & consequently the second album & anything he's done since has been rubbish, except for the charity single he's released when clean (cover of The Clash's Janie Jones). |
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
There were plenty of other alternatives to prog rock in the late '70's. Doctor Feelgood, Eddie & the Hot Rods and the whole pub rock scene, for instance, musically in similar territory to the Sex Pistols, but infinitely superior. But because they didn't swear on TV or wear swastika t-shirts, they didn't make it as big. I admit, I don't know as much about the early 90's scene, but I'm willing to bet there were plenty of alternatives to Oasis who were much better...but again, no hype, no controversy, no popularity.
As for Pete Doherty, I reckon Garinda summed it all up very neatly way back near the start of this thread: Quote:

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
Garinda was talking about Babyshambles, Doherty's drugged up Libertines gimmick act.
The Libertines were much better musically and lyrically than any other band to emerge in the 21st century, and it's a poor do Doherty's idiocy spiralled to the pit of tabloid junk that it did. Don't get me wrong I'm not standing up for his drug use at all, any person that gets involved in skag or crack/cocaine is a fool in my mind, I'm just defending Doherty's musical abilities when clean, because to me when he is clean, he is brilliant. |

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
The Libs may not have pushed any musical boundaries in a technical sense but if not for them there would hardly be any new bands coming through at the moment. Before them, new british guitar music was dead & now there's new bands popping up everywhere boasting of the Libs' influence.
|
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead? was the choice shaker, to me to call an artist genius merits a little bit more than doherty has acheived,so the choice was easy for me- talentless smackhead. the libertines did record some half decent stuff at the begining but genius? sorry mate.
|
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
I don't think he's a genius at all.
Johnny Cash was a genius. Ray Davies is a genius. Doherty is a fool, but did make great music with The Libs. |

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
The talentless little Google Page Ranking!ck is only missing out on an ASBO then he can truely be considered a figurehead for his generation.
Whilst the Red-Top rags are fuelling him with the oxygen of publicity, he will, unfortunately, be around for a little while longer. That is unless he has the misfortune to come across some pure Columbian marching powder, which may remove him permenantly from being a talentless source of irritation! |

Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
I dont think he is a genius or talentless. I thought the Libertines were excellent and their material deserves a chance. The drug taking however has had a negative effect on Pete's talent and the publicity he gets doesn't help.
The other half of the Libs, Carl Barat, now fronts Dirty Pretty Things and their 1st album is excellent - if you watched "Sorted" when it was on you would have heard "Bang Bang You're Dead" by DPT (theme tune) |
Re: Tortured genius/talentless smackhead?
This clown Docherty likes to drink in various boozers down here in the East End. He was in a gents bog a week or so ago having a wee, when a mate of mine walked in & pi**ed in the back of his right ankle boot. He didn't notice, although I suspect Kate may have done later.
