Where Have All The Bands Gone?

King Georges Hall has hosted some big groups in the past such as Bowie,Police,New Order,Bunnymen,The Jam & Slade,to name but a few.But the big names don't seem to come there anymore. They all seem to play Manchester or Preston but this can be a b***ache if it's midweek & have no transport.Should'nt B'Burn council be doing something to attract the headliners back? And i don't mean the likes of Steven Segal &Thunderbox:(

that is a statement i agree with, saw marc bolan/micky finn when they were tyranasorrus rex, also had tickets for bowie on his spiders tour, but sailed from liverpool/dublin on that night was well sick, have seen some great concerts there, one in particular was Roy Orbison, the support band was the beatles. dont think they supported anyone for much longer after that.BRING BACK THE BANDS.;)

King George's Hall always used to be on the big name concert circuit. I saw some great gigs back in the punk and new wave days. A just breaking Blondie were brilliant, and no she didn't do what was reported with the microphone!

It's a shame.

Globalisation is crap.

Big acts like Morrisey & Lostprophets played there not long ago...doesn't seem too bad really.

She daren't even attempt that today. The microphones are wireless; no flex wired back to the amp, to pull on, and retrive a soggy microphone.

It`s a shame really cos I remember sneaking out and getting changed at the bus stop at the end of Pimlico Rd. to go and see the greatest names in Punk EVERY week. Clash, Buzzcocks, Skids, Ruts, Damned, Gen X, Dead Kennedys, Dickies, Stranglers all played down there.
I think it`s overlooked by some promototers cos it`s not stadium style hyper venue, bands are real F*ckin lazy these days, they want to play 3 or 4 stadium gigs (in my opinion bland vast atmosphereless voids, give me something tight and sweaty anyday) the doss the rest of the year. Every year we get 4 pogues gigs in vast arenas and of course I`m gigging on all 4. You lazy toothless Baasturd get yourself a proper job. Green Day, U2, REM and the like Far to high and mighty to drop in at KGH they want to play Man City for the easy 3 points.
That said with someone ambitious in charge of operations at KGH it could be revitalised, Any Volunteers, I`m sure bands like Kaiser Chiefs, Monkeys, Razorlight etc. arent to big for it yet.
Failing that there`s Jack and the Beanstalk on Saturday.

I saw The Charlatans at Empress Ballroom not too long ago which was brilliant.
The room is pretty compact with no seating which is brilliant; I thought this was great for a band as high in the ranks as The Charlatans to play.

However I do understand why stadiums are preferred for the bigger bands, the amount of fans wanting to get to gigs for bands like U2 is astronomical - it would be unfair to only let out 1500 tickets to a band that will easily fill out a stadium.
I like stadium gigs and don't agree that they lack atmosphere, seeing Oasis at Eastlands last summer was buzzing from three miles away, it's an experience like no other.
They've both got their qualities, small & big venues, but I agree that bands are getting very lazy these days and it's making the music suffer.

Re: Where Have All The Bands Gone?

Yeah but if they did 3 nights at KGH they could all sell out and have a much better atmosphere. Maybe stadium atmospheres have improved I don`t go anymore but I do like Festys. But from three miles away you can hardly see the spittle and sweat dripping off chins, veins bulging in the neck and fag burns in kecks unless your watching the big telly which somehow impersonalises it for me.

Definitely Did
I was too young then but people have raved about them blowing off the hoops for years.
Born too late.
