60's Odds, Sods & Mods
The 60's were times of great musical change in Britain and I think it would be interesting to see who were everyone's favourite bands (or even one hit wonders) from the decade.
For me it's between The Beatles, The Small Faces and The Who. |

Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
The Bobby Fuller Four - hit the US charts with a brilliant cover of the Crickets' "I Fought The Law" (later ruined by the Clash). Then released an equally brilliant version of the Crickets' "Love's Made A Fool Of You". Along with Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bobby took the spirit of 50's rock 'n' roll into the 60's. But, sadly, not for long...Bobby was found dead in his car, reeking of gasoline, in an LA parking lot in the summer of '66. The offical verdict was suicide, but darker theories abound. He left some great music behind, though.

The Beatles, Elvis, Cliff.

Cilla Black. (Not a joke, she had a great gutteral soul voice.) Herman's Hermits. Janis Joplin. The Rolling Stones. Ottis Reading. |
Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
Oh and like Anne said Elvis, but he's timeless, not confined to just one decade.:)

Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
interesting tidbit I came across the other day , tangentaly relates to this thread, during the 60 there was a crap group called 'the Dave Clark 5' supposed to be Londons answer to the Mersey sound .......anyway it seems Dave Clark now owns the rights to the TV show Ready Steady Go and everytime the show is aired in re-runs it is 'doctored -up' to include a song by the Dave Clark 5 group doing one of their songs .......sounds like the guy has a bit of an ego ........
|
Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
hey steeljack, the dave clark 5 made some great ballads,as well they wernt that crap.;)
|
Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
I always really liked all the Dave Clark 5's stuff. Thought they had a great sound.
|
Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
The Dave Clark 5 were brilliant. Only someone who wasn't there in the 60s can come out with a statement like "during the 60 there was a crap group called 'the Dave Clark 5' supposed to be Londons answer to the Mersey sound"
Here they come agai-ain, mmm mm mm Catch us if you ca-an. mmm mm mm Time to get a move on mmm mm mm We will yell with all of our might Catch us if you ca-an Catch us if you ca-a-a-a-a-an Catch us if you ca-a-a-a-a-an Catch us if you can. * * * * * * * * * * You say that you love me (say you love me) All of the time (all of the time) You say that you need me (say you need me) You'll always be mine (always be mine) I'm feelin' (DRUM DRUM) glad all over Yes I'm-a (DRUM DRUM) glad all over Baby I'm (DRUM DRUM)glad all over Glad you're mi-i-i-i-ine * * * * * * * * * * * * (I'm in pieces, bits and pieces) Since you left me and you said goodbye-eye (I'm in pieces, bits and pieces) All I do is sit and cry-y (I'm in pieces, bits and pieces) You went away and left me miseree-eee (I'm in pieces, bits and pieces) And that's the way it'll always be * * * * * * * * * * * * I used to know a guy in Blackburn who looked a lot like their keyboard player, Mike Smith. :D |

I too like the Dave Clark 5 and a group not mentioned as of yet The Kinks (or were they a bit more early 70s?)!

Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
No that's a very good mention LancYorkYankee. The Kinks' best stuff came out before the 60's were out.
Great band. |

The Animals, The Searchers, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates...and many many more

Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
Surely the Four Pennies should be mentioned here. And I want to put The Searchers and The Fortunes in my list. Anyone go to see The Fortunes in Ossie in November?

Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
A BIT of a Thread Wonder
I was exposed to "60s music" mostly from my older brother. He was born in 1955 as I was 1960. So he was smack-dab in the middle of the Rock and Roll revolution. Oh how my parents hated that "punks on dope music." My brother would smuggle records in. First album he ever bought was by Cream. I couldn't understand what a Cream was but I LOVED his second album: "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy" by the Who. Brian |

When did the Wheel close wyn?
|
Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
Last all-nighter (featuring Edwin Starr) was on Jan 30th, 1971. There was one more regular session (ie - 8pm to midnight) a week later on Feb 6th and the Wheel was no more. The club later reopened as Placemate.

Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
I'd just like to resurrect this thread & mention a couple of bands that didn't quite reach the heights that the afforementioned Elvis & Kinks did, but form quite a large chunk in my musical taste.
The Easybeats and The Animals are in my opinion generally overlooked in mention of 60's bands but for me their songs still sound great and you can hear their influence in just about every decent rock & roll/indie band since. |
Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
gotta say you got taste shaker, the animals were something else, Bring it on Home to me. is a classic, as are many of their others, easybeats were good, but had only 2 uk hits, aussie group, both hits were class though.for me probably one of the biggest floor fillers of that era never seems to get a mention anywhere was Geno Washington @ the Ram Jam Band.
|
Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
As Mr C says, Geno is well worth checking out, Shakey. Everybody talks about the Who and Small Faces as being mod bands, but this lot were THE ultimate mod band. Their gigs were packed out with mods and such was their popularity that they spent more weeks on the UK album charts in 1966 than any other British band, apart from the Beatles and Stones.

Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
The Animals were amongst my favourites. Anybody remember Sky Pilot?

Re: 60's Odds, Sods & Mods
He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and their bayonets they shine He's there to help them all that he can To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man Sky pilot.....sky pilot How high can you fly You'll never, never, ever reach the sky He smiles at the young soldiers Tells them its all right He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight Soon there'll be blood and many will die Mothers and fathers back home they will cry Sky pilot.....sky pilot How high can you fly You'll never, never, ever reach the sky He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile The order is given They move down the line But he'll stay behind and he'll meditate But it won't stop the bleeding or ease the hate As the young men move out into the battle zone He feels good, with God you're never alone He feels so tired and he lays on his bed Hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said Sky pilot.....sky Pilot How high can you fly You'll never, never, ever reach the sky You're soldiers of God, you must understand The fate of your country is in your young hands May God give you strength Do your job real well If it all was worth it Only time it will tell In the morning they return With tears in their eyes The stench of death drifts up to the skies A young soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot Remembers the words: "Thou shalt not kill" Sky pilot.....sky pilot How high can you fly You never, never, ever reach the sky |
