I want to learn guitar

I mean come on how hard can it be

It's the latest hair brain scheme in the 'life of tinks' :D

What do I need to know?

BTW I'm serious ;)

WillowTheWhisp 09-02-2007 23:03

Re: I want to learn guitar

You need to know what type of guitar (electric, acoustic, folk etc) you want to learn and you need to have short fingernails and tough fingers.

slinky 09-02-2007 23:04

you need to beat me on your Ps2 :D:D:D

Tinkerbelle 09-02-2007 23:07

Re: I want to learn guitar

Cheers willow I thought the first reply would be the 'lets get tinks brigade'

Definitely acoustic. I've never learnt to read music though, is that bad or does it come naturally hearing the notes on a guitar?

WillowTheWhisp 09-02-2007 23:07

Re: I want to learn guitar

You also need to know what type of music you want to produce. Do you want the play chords to sing along to or do you want to play recognisable tunes?

Recognisable tunes. It's something I've always wanted to do as a private hobby, no big music aspirations, I would just like to play a recognisable tune on a guitar :)

WillowTheWhisp 09-02-2007 23:12

Re: I want to learn guitar

OK, well the first fun part is you have to be able to tune the thing but after that it's not too hard - being able to read music does help though.

If you pop into Music Box see if they have a 'Tune A Day' book 1 for classical guitar - it starts with the very basics.

 TUNE IT!!! Does it not come already tuned from the shop?

Trust me to want to start something from scratch :o I really don't know the first thing about it but it looks like fun

I've never, ever been taught music, can I teach myself?

cherokee 10-02-2007 00:37

Re: I want to learn guitar

yeah you can teach your self tinks my eldest lad has just taught himself and cant read music at all...its all done by ear, know the tune in your head and concentrate on that tune you will get used to the notes and soon get the feel for the guitar... im not saying you,ll become pro but you,ll have great fun learning once you get your first tune out ...good luck hun and enjoy...

slinky 10-02-2007 00:39

Re: I want to learn guitar

It's surprising what you can learn by ear Cherokee!!

When i was younger I got a keyboard.... could never ever read music, but I could always belt out the same tune as a song.

Well as for tuning it take a look at this site. One of many I think that can be found. For the rest its practise.

http://www.8notes.com/guitar_tuner/d....asp?sstring=b

shakermaker 10-02-2007 10:45

Re: I want to learn guitar

I've never had a guitar lesson in my life & I'm playing 2 gigs in the next 2 months.
I just started off with the good old tuition video to learn how to tune the thing & replace strings etc, then started learning Beatles & Oasis chords/tabs from the internet and went from there, tabs help you a lot to get the chord shapes right. They look a bit mental when you first look but it gets easier.

Good luck and have patience :)

ps http://www.ultimate-guitar.com is great for looking up songs.

Re: I want to learn guitar

Cheers for the advice guys, I'm gonna have a word with sis-in-law later to see were's the best place to pick a guitar up :)

Lolly 10-02-2007 12:19

Re: I want to learn guitar

I can play 4 different instruments (piano - grade 4, Flute - grade 6, drums & steel pans) so can read music very well. Reading music is just like learning a script for a play. But knowing how to read music really isnt everything when playing guitar. Its all chords etc... Ive always wanted to play it but could never get the hang of it, my brother has tried many, many times to teach me to no avail. :( so I dont think its got anything to do with being musical, although a sense of music and rhythm obviously help.

And when you do the whole rock chick ending and try to smash it up against the speakers it will bounce!

WillowTheWhisp 10-02-2007 23:48

Re: I want to learn guitar

So, are you going for chords now to accompany tunes/singing, rather than playing the melodies themselves? Learning to read music for guitar really isn't hard at all. It's a lot easier than reading piano music. If you can spread your fingers wide and hold down the strings on the frets playing is really easy.

But no Tinks they don't come ready tuned from the shop. :D The strings slacken all the time and constantly need retuning. And of course every time you replace a broken string it needs tuning. You can get an electronic thingummy to tune it to if you don't have a natural ear.

The chords and tabs that Shakermaker is talking about are entirely different to playing the recognisable tunes. They are used for accompanyment and that's easier than playing the melodies but if you get really good you can do both at the same time. ;)

Get what`s scientifically known as an electronic thingummy anyway, it`ll help get your ear in.

Tabs can show you how to play anything from a chord shape to a lead run, it`s just a more pictorial description of the guitar neack with the lines being the strings and the numbers the frets (the metal lines across the neck) Some people with no previous in Clef scores find it easier to understand.

If you want ( I mean Reeeeeeeeeeeaaallyy Want) to play guitar, and you`re prepared to work at it even when you`re crap for a bit and you still keep at it, then you will play guitar. If you want to be Very good then practise scales for 1 hour a day.

I`ve never had lessons and I`ve been a guitarist playing gigs for 30 years this year, I still havent reached that "recognisable tune" thing what you`re talking about, but that`s why you introduce them.

Music Box will have a decent acoustic, you could buy a catalogue guitar cheaper but they can be naff. You could get lessons there but I`d be cheaper. www.thomann.de have a range of Harley Benton acoustics for <£100 you`ll prob get a tuner cheap there. If you see something you like and want it checking over PM me it`s no prob.

WillowTheWhisp 11-02-2007 08:30

Re: I want to learn guitar

:D See how complicated it's becoming already?

I learned to play classical on a nylon strung Spanish guitar. That meant I could play melodies and/or chord accompaniments. I can read music, which is easy especially for guitar and gives you the advantage of being able to play something without first having to find someone else who can. So I could play classic, folk, country, pop, rock ..... but my 'witchy fingers' put paid to it in the end. It's an inherited thing, my little fingers bend inwards and it's hard to reach the frets so I gave up and concentrated on growing my nails :D

Tinkerbelle 11-02-2007 10:51

Re: I want to learn guitar

:surprise: Yes willow everytime I come back to this thread it's sounding more and more complicated! Maybe I should stick to Gayles suggestion.

I didn't think there was going to be so much stuff involved. I thought I just went to a shop picked up a guitar and one of those things you plug it into to make it sound really loud to annoy the neighbours ...... and start strumming :guitarist

Not only that I also play left handed, does it make any difference?

Gayle 11-02-2007 11:21

Re: I want to learn guitar

Huge difference - you either have to string everything the opposite way or learn to play right handed. Paul McCartney's left handed and says in articles that he had loads of problems when learning.

PS - I think you should go for it. Just because a few people are putting constructive (or downright daft in my case) suggestions to you doesn't mean you should listen. Give it a go!

He had to learn all the chords upside down yes, but this was because left handed guitars were basically unheard of back then.

LOL! I know it's not the same as a real guitar but I have to play my Guitar Heroes guitar console thingy upside down ...... it gets confusing to say the least.

Zero 11-02-2007 12:28

Re: I want to learn guitar

Dont start getting put off.
Do you WANT it ?
If you`ve never played guitar before there`s no such thing as Left/right handed.
Right handed people actually play guitar left handed and vice versa.
IF you WANT it you can do it.
All it takes is DESIRE and PRACTICE.

shakermaker 11-02-2007 12:41

Re: I want to learn guitar

Zero is very right in what he says.
In fact, Noel Gallagher is naturally left handed; writes everything with his left hand - and yet plays guitar right handed.
It really is a matter of patience and will to do what you want to do.

flashy 11-02-2007 13:33

MUMMIBOO 11-02-2007 19:22

Re: I want to learn guitar

I got Daddiboo a electric Guitar for £129.99 check toys r us website comes with everything you need!

Just make sure you get some headphones so you can practicet till your hearts content.

When i got him the guitar for xmas oh my god what a mistake i have told him on more than one occasion that i was going to take it back!! every two minutes he says "Lynn come here listen to this" and its a bit naff but i have to say how wonderful it is!! he cant read music or play guitar but he can now play twinkle twinkle lol and some bits of other stuff that he has learnt from ear.

If you want to learn then go for it you can get guitar lessons on the internet.

Good Luck on your quest.

You highlight and copy the url. Type your text as normal. Highlight the word you want as the link. Click on the thing above the text box which looks like a globe and a paper clip. Then in the window which opens up paste the url.
