eurovision song contest
ok, I know i am probably so out of date on these things , but does anyone ever watch this show,it used to be huge in the 60' , somehow I came across this link to the Ukranian entry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHR491s3iSw featuring some tranny/drag queen and am wondering what happened to the 'nice' safe acts like Collodagh Rogers (sp?) and Nana Moskouri .
Is the Eurovision still a big thing on UK television or has it gone by its sell by date ? Think it would be interesting to know what songs from the Eurovision that folks remember and why ......... thanks    |
Re: eurovision song contest
the only one i remember really is Abba- Waterloo, the reason its the only song that was half decent.:D would be very surprised if many still watch this dirge steeljack.lol

Re: eurovision song contest
never watch it its not my cup of tea at all too political for my liking.
|
Re: eurovision song contest
It still has it's fans.
They can be quite obsessive. Most of them are cults. |
Re: eurovision song contest
They decide tonight what the British entry will be. Seem to be bringing out some has beens again for this one. Big Brovaz, Brian Harvey and one of Atomic Kitten are all in it. No doubt be another load of poo

Re: eurovision song contest
we'll never ever ever win the eurovision again or even come close to winning, thanx to the iraq war, its all political nowadays, so i dont even know why we still bother

Re: eurovision song contest
Most of them are cults.------ is that a spelling mistake rindy?:D
|
Re: eurovision song contest
Should have mentioned earlier, I'm one of the cults who sadly watches it.:D
My thoughts on tonight's show to chose a Song for Europe... Atomic Kitten Liz- Post hippy, feel good song. Reminded me of the New Seeker's 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing'. Looked fantastic, and again the puff ball mini-kaftan was reminiscent of the clothes worn in the Coke advert from the early seventies, that used the New Seeker's song. Good chance. Brian Harvey- Another car crash, were he again ran himself over again. Return to Jail. Do not pas Go. Do not collect £200. The Brovas- Great. Probably won't get enough votes to win, but contemporary and street cool. Loved it. Scooch- Way, way beyond camp. They were always Steps wannabes, but Steps climbed the stairs to bad taste Heaven. These lot should look for the stairs to bad taste Hell. That said they could well romp home and win. Cyndi- French girl great voice, and looked beautiful, but just a total mish-mash rip off of 'On the Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond','The Skye Boat Song', and 'Danny Boy'. Not a chat in hell's chance. Justin Hawkins- The Rock Opera pastiche used to be funny and charming, but the joke is over now. Terrible song, although his singing partner had a great voice if you strained to hear her over the synthesised backing track. |
Re: eurovision song contest
Used to love Euro vision and always used to buy the winning single, haven't watched it in ages now.
|
Re: eurovision song contest
Used to watch it when I was a kid. Watched the results show last year for the first time in ages and couldn't believe the politicalness of the voting - Cyprus voted for Greece and Greece voted for Cyprus - Norway, Sweden and Denmark all voted together, Bosnia, Croatia and the other eastern bloc old states voted for each other. Huge joke if that's what it's based on.

Scooch- Way, way beyond camp. They were always Steps wannabes, but Steps climbed the stairs to bad taste Heaven. These lot should look for the stairs to bad taste Hell. That said they could well romp home and win. They did didnt they rindy!!! :D Im also one of the stupid people who watch it - well tonight i turned it over just in time to see the two songs for the sing off!!! As soon as the scooch one came on knew theyd pick that - why because its so stupid!!! I used to have to watch it with my mum - she used to love it especially when ireland won! Best was one year i was babysitting my niece and she screamed the house down and the only time she was quiet was when the eurovision was on - so i had to watch it if i wanted peace!!! Shes 12 now 13 in may - and you know something she watches it now as well and she laughs her head off when i tell her the story about that night!!! :D Best is Terry Wogans commentary - you cant beat that!!! |
Re: eurovision song contest
well rindy and jen, kudos to both of you, for admitting you watch that tripe.:D
|
Re: eurovision song contest
Hey there was primeval on tonight and it was the last one as well - well until the next series. That was more important than hearing the choice of songs. I just think its so funny you get neighbours voting for neighbours and the ones who hate each other no matter what no points for them!!

Re: eurovision song contest
We dont take it serious though we are known for that we laugh at it - a lot of the other countries take it serious and put in 'serious' songs.

terry wogan is the best part of it ,I love his humour...haha . but to be honest ive not even seen this years entry but wether its good or bad we still wouldnt stand a chance, so i think its time they put terry into something more usefull so we could enjoy him again and sack off the ESC |

well if they are the last three they may as well give up now ...they are all cr.p... did we not have better entries than those.#? |
Re: eurovision song contest
the one by cindy was like a celine dion song - big ballad type. I only heard the one that won and hers because i was more interested in primevel on itv seeing as it was the last one so missed all the songs that you had to pick from. For pure kitsch - it has to be the one that won but i did prefer cindys but then again when listening to it it just sounded like another one of celines/whitney etc and thought id heard it before!! even though the songs they sing are new ones especially written for the eurovision.

so is the flying the flag one the one we got then??? |

Just watched it on your link mthead and it is catchy in a typical eurovision way...although I half expected them to launch into barbie girl at one point :D

Re: eurovision song contest
Personally I hate the scooch song but realisticly it is a eurovison song through and through.
I think nowadays Eurovision is a laughing stock over here, but about 5 years ago UkCowboy and myself were in Quara, Malta on holiday (same time as the world cup!!) and we were looking for somewhere to eat when we noticed a lot of locals gathered in one of the squares, we heard the music and wandered over to see what was going on. As we got there we were greeted by a 40ft tall Terry Wogan, Eurovision was being projected onto a large white hotel wall across the street, we were welcomed with open arms and invited to stay and watch the contest with them, and boy oh boy do they take it seriously!!!! I've never seen anything like it, and for the first time in years I found myself glued to Eurovision, not interested in the UK, but hooked on Malta. As it turned out after about 3/4 of the voting Malta and Lithuania were tied for top spot and as the final few sets of votes came in the tension rose. Malta lost on the last set of votes, and I found myself genuinely gutted for all these Maltese nutters who thought it was the end of the world!!! Some were crying, others were shouting at the screen saying it was a fix, and how the turks were to blame!!! It was truely quite bizarre!!! However it was a great night out in the end!!! And the moral of the story is. . . . . . . . if you want to really enjoy Eurovision go to Malta, they love it!!! |
Re: eurovision song contest
steps were in tune?? what you been on flashy.:D

|
Re: eurovision song contest
I haven't watched it for years. I used to look forward to it and record all the foreign songs and try to learn them. I was probably singing rubbish
|
Re: eurovision song contest
Its only Terry Wogan ,thats any good now on that show.. and he,s past his sell by date ..:)
|
Re: eurovision song contest
Terry Wogans comments on the actual Eurovision night are brilliant.
What was also brilliant was how he announced the wrong act. He said Cyndi had won, and then Fearne Cotton jumped in saying that it was actually Scooch. Its been on the news today that 100 people complained about it.... my goodness, I know I'm sad because I always watch Eurovision, but words fail me!!! |

Re: eurovision song contest
A while ago I happened to see the E4 programme 'Boys Will Be Girls', were they made male ex-pop stars dress as women, and try to pass themselves off as a girl group. One of the men taking part was Russ, one of the 'boys' from Scooch!
