Has to be Dylan, though Lennon ran it close.

I'm torn between the great Mahalia Jackson singing We Shall Overcome, or Where Have All The Flowers Gone by Marlene Dietrich. I love them both.

True cmonstanley street fighting man is a good one, mind u the stones did quite a few protest songs, "we love you" protest against micks spell in jail was a strong one.

What about "19" ? It's difficult but I opted for "Eve of Destruction" because that one really got to me at the time.

Re: best 'protest' song

I would've gone for 'Man in Black' by the great man Cash if it was there, however I've gone for Dylan. Not really for 'Blowing in the Wind', but because he made so many other great protest songs while in his prolific youth - Percy's Song is a brilliant one but not too famous.
I gave 'Give Peace a Chance' a nod, too. Gotta mention Lennon. I still think the guy never reached his writing potential.

Re: best 'protest' song

one song which I forgot to include , but should definetly have made the list is the Buffy Sainte-Marie song Universal Soldier

Re: best 'protest' song

Don't really like any of 'em. My favourite protest song is "Double Trouble" by Otis Rush (great Chicago blues guitarist who most of you have never heard of, but, believe me, the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page have...and it shows). It includes lyrics like "...in this generation of millionaires, it's hard for me to keep decent clothes to wear" and was written while the guy was actually scuffling on the streets of Southside Chicago in the 50's...a million miles away from wannabe working class heroes sitting in their luxury mansions singing "imagine no possessions."

Re: best 'protest' song

Probably the best "protest" band were formed about 65 Country Joe @The Fish, I-Feel-Like-Im-A-Fixing-To-Die is one of many, they were actually called the band that stopped the war in viet nam, no mean accolade by the american press, i was lucky enough to see em at Crystal Palace, along with Richie Havens and others, check em out jack if ya like protest stuff, ya wont be disapointed.;)Tricky Dicky was another classic.

Donovan - Catch The Wind

In the chilly hours and minutes,
Of uncertainty, I want to be,
In the warm hold of your loving mind.

To feel you all around me,
And to take your hand, along the sand,
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind.

When sundown pales the sky,
I wanna hide a while, behind your smile,
And everywhere I'd look, your eyes I'd find.

For me to love you now,
Would be the sweetest thing, 'twould make me sing,
Ah, but I may as well, try and catch the wind.

When rain has hung the leaves with tears,
I want you near, to kill my fears
To help me to leave all my blues behind.

For standin' in your heart,
Is where I want to be, and I long to be,
Ah, but I may as well, try and catch the wind.

:D I remember a friend of mine singing " 'Appen I'll miss, well try and catch the wing."

Is this the Nana Mouskouri one?

Touch the Wind

I woke up this morning and my mind fell away
and looking back sadly from tomorrow
as I heard an echo from the past softly say
come back, come back, won't you stay?
I wanted to reach you, let you know I still care
and lost in the silence of my sorrow
I put a promise in the wind, on the air, to fly away to you there

Touch the wind. Catch my love as it goes sailing
Touch the wind and I'll be close to you
I'll be easy to find
on the winds of the morning I'll come sailing
I'll be easy to find
and, baby, I'll be close to you

And only forever can I say I love you
and only forever have I lost you
but only a dreamer could wake up as I do and hope it's still yesterday

Touch the wind. Catch my love as it goes sailing
Touch the wind and I'll be close to you
I'll be easy to find
on the winds of the morning I'll come sailing
I'll be easy to find
and, baby, I'll be close to you

Touch the wind...

Very nice, but how exactly are either of these little ditties "protest" songs? They both sound like old-fashioned love songs to me! :)

Re: best 'protest' song

Who made this shortlist ?
How is Ruby or catch the wind a PROTEST song?
Why all Anti War songs what about songs protesting about other stuff?
What about Bodies - Sex pistols (anti-abortion)
Oh Bondage Up yours - X ray Spex (Womens Lib)
Doesn`t make it alright - Terry Hall + (Racism)
Government FLu - Dead kennedys (Being used as guinea pigs by the powers that be)
(or anything by the Kennedys for that matter)
In fact why is there not 1 single punk song in the list when that was the nature of the Genre?
I could rhyme em off all night but to be honest there is 1 simple answer.......

POUNDLAND

For that challanges the effing here and effing now.

And an effing bit of the other. smiley face

I don`t think you see the big picture, its not protesting about poundland. I`m a supporter of pound shops.

It`s more of a statement of the economic enviroment.
Actually it`s probably really Commy ranting about the social divide and the unequality of our meanongless and pitiful existence.

Well, 'Ruby' is about a guy who is injured in the Vietnam War --------- 'Catch the Wind'? Maybe Donovan was protesting that he couldn't catch it? :D
