What song was #1 on the day you were born
Bit of fun here, have you ever done this?
Some people believe our lives are profoundly influenced by whatever pop song was number one on the day we were born. On the day Heather Mills (the ex Mrs McCartney) was born (12th Jan 1968) it was Hello Goodbye by The Beatles! My number #1's are: 'You're So Vain' by Carly Simon in the US 'Long Haired Lover From Liverpool' by Little Jimmy Osmond in the UK 'Ben' by Michael Jackson in Australia See which songs you get This day in Music |

It doesn't go back far enough for me - probably Vera Lynn - but then no-one could afford to buy music and nothing to play it on - there was a war on after all

Re: What song was #1 on the day you were born
There were no "charts" when I was born but Glenn Miller had been given the world's first gold disc for sales of "Chatanooga Choochoo" - and I'm still playing it. :D
When I got married Elvis was no 1 with "She's Not You", my first child had Dave Clark's "Glad All Over", and my second had Sandie Shaw with "Long Live Love". My younger daughter loves having Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" at no. 1 when she was born. |

I remember it well, and it must have been around the same time I fell in love with Guy Mitchell, singing "Sparrow in the Treetops", though I think the song was earlier than that. :)

Re: What song was #1 on the day you were born
They didn’t have record charts in 1937. And yes they did have records and not cylinders either. Back in those days the popularity of a song was based on the sale of sheet music.
The dance band heart throb of the day was probably Al Bowlly or Sam Browne who sang with bands like Jack Hilton, Roy Fox, Ambrose and Harry Roy who produced some real foot tapping, happy music that sounds as good today as it did back then. |

Re: What song was #1 on the day you were born
Mine was "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procul Harum.
Funnily enough, this should have been the answer to a question at a pub quiz at The Park about 6 years ago when we first moved to Great Harwood. Unfortunately, the quizmaster got it wrong and when we argued the point, I told him I've got the "Guinness Book of Hit Singles" at home, one minute away - I can prove it easily enough. "What version is it?" "1994" "Oh, well mine's 1998, so that's why it's different" I realised that there was no point arguing with someone who thinks that chart positions might change from year to year. |
Re: What song was #1 on the day you were born
No chats in 1946, but Whiter Shade of Pale was knocking about the Top Twenty when I was courting in the 60s, I bloody hate that song:D:rolleyes:

Re: What song was #1 on the day you were born

Les Paul was the first artist to do multi tracking on a record. I understand that it was six tracks dubbed into one. But during the war back in the early forties I played, almost to destruction, a record named “The Laughing Policeman” by Charles Penrose. It sold over one million copies. Firmly in my childhood memories are songs such as Big Rock Candy Mountain sung by Burl Ives. Oh the buzzing of the bees in the cigarette trees The soda water fountain And the lemonade springs where the bluebird sings On big rock candy mountain. |

'I Feel Fine' - The Beatles, 7th January 1965.
