What was the first record you bought?

What was the first record you bought with your own money?

Mine was Another Brick in the Wall (Part II) by Pink Floyd. I bought it from Mary's Music on Whalley Road back in December 1979.

Two days later, I was back in there to buy Diamond Smiles by the Boomtown Rats.

:D Top thread..... Some of our younger members probably won't know what 45's are....

As posted in another thread mine was Visage Fade to Grey, it got plenty of airplay. Unsurprisingly, Steve Strange can't sing to save his life and Visage were total rubbish in concert..... Looks like prison was the best place for him really... :D

I must be younger than all of you but I still can't remember :blush8:

Re: What was the first record you bought?

It was either Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival or Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan. I bought it at Wiseman's I think it was called. The shop was above what is now Gibson's Sports on Broadway. You could buy LPs and pay so much a week til they were paid for. Can you do that these days with CDs? They're expensive enough.

Re: What was the first record you bought?

Can't remember the name but it would have been Brian Ferry.

Quite sure that you cannot buy CDs on hire purchase nowadays, yerself.

Re: What was the first record you bought?

First single, on a 78! "Diana" - Paul Anka. That was probably around 1957 at a guess.
First LP, "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" - Frank Sinatra, still my all-time favourite singer.
Both records played grooveless on my red and grey Dansette Junior. Remember those you old timers?

Not 100% sure but I think it was Goody Two Shoes - Adam and the Ants, bought from Mary's Music, that was a brill shop.

Re: What was the first record you bought?

The first record I bought was Ottawan - Hands Up, I'm not sure how old I was but I bought it second hand from the car boot sale that used to be held next to Spring Hill School.. About Mary's Music, I did my work experience there and worked there for 3 years afterwards, it certainly was a great shop!

Re: What was the first record you bought?

Roy bought me Jason & Kylies Especially for You for my birthday when I was about 8/9. He thought I really liked it cos me & my cousin kept playing it over & over on the juke box at a family do - but really we only did it cos I knew he hated it!!! (Don't think he knew that til now)!

Think the first album I bought myself was East 17's Walthomstow - still got it somewhere!!! It's very poor!

It seems that most folk from the age of vinyl cut their teeth musically, at Mary's Music.

Without You - Nielson

I already owned some platters on 78s but dont know where from. Swing low sweet chariot on 78 and loads of other... But first bought was Without You on a 45

I dunno about some not knowing what a 45/t8 is.,. I bet some have never seen a record player or cleaned the dust/fluff off a player needle :)

Re: What was the first record you bought?

August, 1964...after six months of mithering, my long-suffering parents finally give in and buy me a Dansette record player. Immediately, I rush downtown, along Broadway, into Woolies and there it is..."The Greatest Hits Of Elvis Presley". It's got a strange line drawing of old El' on the front and it's on some weird label called "Embassy" but who cares? It's only 14/6 (circa 70p) - a mere snip when compared with full-price LPs which sell for the princely sum of 32/6 (circa £1.60). I make my purchase and as I'm walking home along Blackburn Road, I take the record out of the bag to examine in it. Then I see those fatal words "...as performed by Danny Storm and the Tempests". That's when I realise my mistake - I've bought an album's worth of cover versions on Woolies' own in-house label by a singer who sounds as much like Elvis as yer average Saturday night turn at the Willow Mount.

My first record and my first record-buying lesson - always look closely before you buy!

Re: What was the first record you bought?

Well, Wynonie, a bit of a coincidence, my first record, was Elvis golden records, I bought it second hand from a boy who sat next to me in class, name Mick Sturzaker, he played in a group called the Cyclons, It was ten bob, I payed him off a bob a week.
The first new record I bought was Niel Sedaka, Breaking up is hard to do. From Mary;s record stall on Accy Market, one Sat morning, on my way home from the Baths.

Re: What was the first record you bought?

Wynonie, Just got an email from Ace Records to say, I can now get all there products, from Shock Records, in Melbourne, They are a record company that do Quality compilations and are agents for other imports. Have a look at there website.

Wynonie Harris 10-08-2004 07:15

Re: What was the first record you bought?

Alan, their site looks the business. Get yerself some prime R&B (that's rhythm & blues, not the soulless, synthesised garbage that masquerades under the title of R&B these days!).

Tarkus by Emerson Lake and Palmer bought from Abbey records for 1.50 in that new money that had just come out.

Re: What was the first record you bought?

Just had a look at, what was the top of the charts in December, 1966, No 1, Tom Jones, Green Green Grass Of Home, No 2- The Seekers, Morningtown Ride and would you beleive, Val Doonican, at No 3 with what would I be. Well I didn't contribute to any of them, must have been my mum and dad.

Re: What was the first record you bought?

My very first 45 was "Fire" by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown....quickly followed up with "Race with the Devil" by the Gunn anyone remember those? I still play them now!

WillowTheWhisp 17-09-2004 22:36

Re: What was the first record you bought?

OOh I loved Arthur Brown! But my first 45 goes further back than that because it was probably a Lonnie Donegan. Not quite sure which one as I was very young at the time. Rock Island Line, Cumberland Gap, Tom Dooley.

I've already said elsewhere that my brain cells are dying off!

Dead boring, the first record I ever bought was an LP of Greig's Piano Concerto!

First pop record I ever bought was "The Lion sleeps tonight" from that little record shop on Blackburn Road by the viaduct.

I remember clubbing together with my friend Margaret to buy "Cathy's Clown" by the Everley Brothers - we swopped it over every week and wore it out! Saw them twice on their last London tour (ages ago) and they were STILL fantastic!
