Probably the last of that generation of black American entertainers, such as Josephine Baker, Nina Simone, Elizabeth Welch etc., who achieved greater success in Europe, than they did in their homeland.

I saw her a couple of times in the '80's, when she was reinvented as a hi-energy diva, and she was always great fun, even though she'd qualify for her pension then.
