It doesn't get more Accrington than this, Mike Harding "The Accrington Pals"

YouTube - ‪Accrington Pals - Mike Harding‬‏

PS Cheers Jay, that was done the way you suggested via Cashy. ;)

Never heard of any songs that mention Accrington but didn't the Beatles mention something about all the Pot-Holes in Blackburn?

Brilliant. We should never forget the sacrifices made by these brave young men.

All our children should be told the story of their bravery.
We should never let their memories fade.

Mike Harding - Beautiful. Any dry eyes out there?

I think Tommy Franks has an Accrington Pals song on his recently-issued (?) CD

Yes - it was a 'A Day In The Life'. The line goes, 'I read the news today oh boy, 10,000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire". Apparently that was literally true - they read it in the paper and just slapped it in the lyric for no meaningful reason.

Try these:

Burlington Bertie And Accrington Stanley by The Waterboys. It's a B-Side from their Glastonbury song single, and is more of a bizarre spoken poem than a song to be honest. Listen to this version by the original singer.

The Bard Of Oswaldtwistle by Dylan Owen. Haven't heard this yet - was on my to do list. Found this on Youtube - not sure if it's the same guy.

The Accrington McBrides/The Wexford Assembly by Dick Gaughan. I think Accy was used in the title to set a mood rather than being an influence on the music. Here's a nice acoustic cover.

Shaft in Accrington Stanley by Vegan Abortion. Here's a remixed version - a bit naff if I'm honest.

Oh and don't forget the covers band from Southampton - Accrington Stanley. They're quite well known - I'm surprised copyright was never brought up.

Some interesting finds there, Pud.

There's also another band called Accrington Stanley which is, strangely enough, a Beatles cover band from the Midlands!

No-one's mentioned the classic by Celtic Cross 'I love the smell of Accy in the morning' :)

Who picked that picture to represent the "Accrington Pals". Those men shown, are part of the Blackburn detachment, which were formed because Chorley didn't raise a full company.

The attached would be better., they are all Accrington lads, I've put their names on their chests.

There is a folk-singer/humourist calling himself Stanley Accrington.I've forgotten his real name. In fact, he started his working life as a booking clerk on Acrington Railway Station. He talks about his girl friend, Alexandra Crewe.

Really don't know to be honest Retlaw, whoever posted it to you tube I suppose. Probably not from round the Town so just used some old WWI pictures from the Web.

Retlaw you know the pics attached to the song are not Accrington Pals, but we didn't know that...and I guess that whoever made up the slideshow to go with the song didn't know either.
This is your area of expertise. It is like me watching medical dramas and picking holes in the technical stuff.
We do it because we can, we have the knowledge.

I don't think you will agree with me on this one, but I don't think it matters overmuch that the pictures in the slideshow are not Accrington Pals(I think you are a purist and that is why you will not agree)but I think the song is still poignant and raises the memory of the brave young men.... that anything that does that is doing no disservice to their memory.

Just my opinion, expressed most humbly.

Last night in my local, I attended a folk night with a Great War theme. The highlight was Dylan Owen, over from Ossie, singing his 'song 'The Accrington Pals'. Beautiful. For my part, I read the poem' 'Them Lads fro' Accrington'. By an unknown author, it appeared in the Observer during the war. I am now going to watch the clip, shown above, of Dylan singing his song. I suggest you do the same.

Apparently that was literally true - they read it in the paper and just slapped it in the lyric for no meaningful reason, 4000 holes is the actual line not 10,000. 4000 pot holes in Blackburn's roads and streets.
Mike Harding also mentions HOLLANDS PIES in one of his songs
