I've actually got a live recording of the gig Wyn. It's not too good quality as it was recorded on one of those hand held battery powered cassette devices. I've copied it onto CD format. I'll let you have a copy.

RIP Bob Babbit.

I watched Standing In The Shadows Of Motown DVD last week for the umpteenth time. The Funk Brothers were involved with more hits than The Beatles, Elvis and The Beach Boys combined. Most people have probably never heard of them.

I'm not sure Alan, but was Bob the only white member of The Funk Bros?

A really good book that covers in depth the full history of Motown and a complete discography (all Motown related labels)

Motown The History by Sharon Davis. Guinness Publications ISBN 0-85112-894-7

It's out of print now, but not impossible to get hold of. I've had my copy about fifteen years now. I think I paid around £25 when I bought it.

It's full of information, facts and brilliant photos. A good reference book for Motown fans.

So where you a mod as well? I'm sure a guy called Mark Burroughs was part of that scene or maybe he was lying - remember his name? What was the look? Vest and parallels when dancing and a leather coat when out in the street?

Can`t say I know the name Kes but a face????

The look then was always changing for instance early 60`s ,Teddy Boys,Beatniks,Beatlemania.I wore Edwardian style jackets double breasted
and buttoning high to the collar.
Kipper ties, floral shirts, hipsters and flares into the 70`s
Platform shoes and Cossack hairspray!!
I personally never owned a pair of Levi`s,but when I wore jeans it was teamed up with cheesecoth shirts,a sort of nod to the cool hippy guys who were about.
Smart suits at weekend, always with a double vent in the jacket, big collar on my shirt, always a tie.
Never managed to own a leather coat but it was a good look.

And I never ever went to Wigan Casino...

The guy at school used to go to Wigan Casino in the 70's and wore parallels, which were like equal width all the way up with a crease. No wonder they let him in as apparently they didn't sell alcohol there. Mark Burroughs used to go and was a drug user - black bombers etc, so he told me.

I am talking about the Wigan Casino folks who used to dance every weekend or whenever they could.:D

Re: Dare I ask? Does anyone like Motown?

Two completely separate scenes.

The 60's mod scene was all about the latest soul sounds from the USA and the sharpest threads. In Accrington, this meant picking up your Levis from the Army & Navy Stores and having your suit handmade at Ernie McNoes tailors on Blackburn Road with the correct pocket flap arrangement, cuff buttons, vent lengths and other details. Then, dancing to those soul records at Accy Disco on Whalley Road, Blackburn Stax Club and Burnley Mecca. Keep The Faith was indeed one of the top faces in town - Accy's answer to Sting in "Quadrophenia" (KTF, I'll be expecting a pint for this on Saturday ;) ). Don't remember Stevie R (although I'd probably know him if I saw him), but his mate, Bobby, was also one of the top lads on the scene.

I went to Wigan Casino now and again during the mid-70's (as did Jaysay) and this was different. The music was obscure 60's sides that had never made it back in the day and ranged from brilliant soul sounds to total dross (think "Footsee"). Clothing styles were a far cry from the smartness of the mods with badge-covered singlets and 40" soul bags - not a very stylish look in my view. Amphetamine use was widespread, although I never touched them.

That's the way it was!

Well the guy in my class who bragged about it was 14 - 15. 2 other people who claimed to attend were also same age who told me about their experiences in the early 80's.

No, strictly soft drinks. You had to be a member to attend and membership was restricted to over-16's. Of course, there was no such thing as ID cards in those days. It was down to the bouncers to decide whether you were underage or not when you turned up on the night, so I suppose some young uns could've slipped through.

That seems a bit strange not to have alcohol? Usually just having soft drinks indicates using amphetamines was given the nod and wink, and an accepted part of the clubs function. All night dancing needs all night artificial stimulation.

A girl I knew who told me about her experiences there said a lot of girls were in tears the morning after after taking speed all night, they also used barbiturates to come down off the amphetamines.

There were actually a lot of soft drinks only clubs back in the 60's. Accy Disco which was on the upper floor of the red brick building on the corner of Whalley Road and Broadway, for instance. There were many more across the country including the famous Twisted Wheel in Manchester and the Scene club in London. People went for the music, the "buzz" and because these were the places to be seen. If you wanted a drink, you nipped out to a nearby pub (in Accy Disco's case, the Broadway). Obviously amphetamine use did occur in many of these clubs, but there were plenty who just went to dance to soul records and enjoy the atmosphere.

All the dance halls virtually were no drinks only soft, the exception being Accy Con club, but even there the bar was not part of the dance hall.

I'm listening to a Dells album tonight, then I suddenly realized what an absolutely outstanding track this one is, even though I've heard it 100's of times over the years. Has anyone else experienced this?
