You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve - Johnny Boy

James Dead Bradfield (singer from the Manics) produced anti-pop. My ears nearly exploded with delight when I first heard it, and I thought the single was dead and buried...

Re: Favourite single

I like loads of songs; there's not really one I can think of as all time favourite - different songs bring up different memories.

Let's just say that there are loads of songs from the 80s that I like.

Like 'Don't You Want Me' by Human League, for example.

But then I also like Hush, which I think is still in the charts, although I doubt it will be an all-time great!

I hate to point this out, but Hideaway was never released as a single, although it should have been.

One of the best ones on The Circus, though (if a bit sad)

Re: Favourite single

I have all but one of the Erasure albums (including The Two Ring Circus). I don't know what its called, but it is either due for release soon or has already been released.

I have a load of limited edition 12" Erasure singles too, and I have been to a few of their concerts! My missus especially likes Andy Bell's outfits!

I'm a bit of an Erasure fan!

accymel 21-03-2005 20:06

Re: Favourite single

the two ring circus were a compilation of producer 'Flood' mixes i used to have it sadly lost all my vinyl to the ex whom refused to give em back, i also has the abba-esque Ltd ed 12" .

"Good Rockin' Tonight" - Wynonie Harris. The most important single of the post-war era. Without it, there would be no rock/pop music as we know it.

great track-but jackie brenstons"Rocket 88"is supposedly the first r@roll record ever made in1954,

Wynonie Harris 29-03-2005 09:52

Re: Favourite single

Yeah, "Rocket 88" is a great single, especially with Ike Turner's superb guitar playing. However, "Good Rockin' Tonight" was made a full seven years before and effectively made the breakthrough from rhythm & blues to rock & roll with its storming beat and slapback bass. It certainly impressed a young truck driver in Memphis called Elvis Presley who covered it in 1954 as one his very first singles on Sun Records.

Cashman, I learnt some of my musical knowledge from listening to the older guys talking music on the Deck!

entwisi 30-03-2005 08:31

Re: Favourite single

Gosh,
No way could I even get it down to half a dozen. It also depends on my mood at the time. I quite like morbid stuff when feeling melancholy, Rock when upbeat, Vocals when chilled, etc.

Music should feed your mood and its natural to feel differently depending on whats happening in your life at that point.

My 2p anyway

Aquarius 30-03-2005 08:38

Re: Favourite single

Like most people, it depends on my mood, but Roy Orbison's In dreams..is up there among the top few. and most of Elvis's earlier releases

Re: Favourite single

My favourite song of all time is 'Northern Sky' by Nick Drake, but that wasn't released as a single. My favourite single and fifth favourite song is 'Blue Guitar' by Justin Hayward and John Lodge. For the record, here's the rest of my top ten songs:

2. Fairport Convention 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes'
3. Pink Floyd 'Wish You Were Here'
4. The Strawbs 'The Flower And The Young Man'
6. Peter Gabriel 'Blood Of Eden'
7. Richard and Linda Thompson 'A Heart Needs A Home'
8. Emmylou Harris 'Boulder To Birmingham'
9. Yes 'Turn Of The Century' (you see, I managed to get an Accy link in somewhere, as it's Jon boy's native town)
10. Barclay James Harvest 'Mocking Bird'

BTW I'm not an ageing hippie in his 50s, I'm only 34.
