Players in, Players out????

who do u think will be leaving us this summer and where do u think we need to improve?

I reckon

Rory leaving (hope not)

I hope Flynn stays on for another season

i also think we need to secure up the back four
so a new decent centre back to put presure on those already there and also another left/right back cover for phyco or cav who i we have mised massively in since his injury

and i would like to see a player in the mould of lutel with a bit of flair up front (fast and tricky)

and maybe a centre mid just to tighten things up

So get busy coley :p

sounds good to me John. Wouldn't like to hazard a guess on who maybe released

sparkie 25-04-2005 15:30

Re: Players in, Players out????

officially being released are jonathon smith, steve flitcroft, lutel james, jon kennedy and paul howarth.

Hacker has been put on the transfer list.

i would have thought the club would want to make their money on rory so i would think he'll be going too.

Tin Monkey 25-04-2005 19:07

Re: Players in, Players out????

I don't think there're any real surprises in that list.

Smith hasn't really featured this season and although he's been an excellent servant for the club in recent years, I don't see him as a Conference player.

Flitcroft and Howarth are in a similar vein as Smith. Good servants, but if you're looking to go forward you need more quality than these two can offer.

Kennedy is a decent 'keeper, but I think someone more substantial is needed if we're going to build a strong defence.

Lutel was already gone in my mind and I didn't think that Halford would ever return either. All in all, no shocks at all for me.

I just hope this is the start of things, because in my mind there a few others that need upgrading too.

I know I'll be criticised for this, but being sentimental about things will achieve nothing. If Stanley are serious about going forward, we need to clear out the 'averages' and replace them with better players. This is when Coleman will really earn his corn. Can he attract the kind of players we need?

oh grow up ossycloger!!!!!
are u serious?????

the players who are leaving do not shock me at all exceot for JK smithy was always bound for barrow, hacker hasent had a real chance this season, howarth hasent had the best of seasons with too many mistakes, lutel was gone long ago, flicters was good but didnt reach the grade i thought

i also think that Ged could be leaving (not confirmed just a gut feeling)

but just leave the scouse comments out they are useless just look at liverpool since benitez has come in look at all the other spaniards, wenger with all the french, as said many many times before this is where coley will have his connections therefore this is where he will get most of his players from

So with the players who have been released (i am gutted that Flitters and JavaScript are going) does this mean that Danny Alcock will be numero uno next season or a new goalie brought in to replace JK. Also, will Paul Cook be hanging up his boots unless absolutely necessary and concentrate on the training side.

Re: Players in, Players out????

I can't think of a significant reason why ASFC should say 'bye to JK. Perhaps JK wants to say 'bye to ASFC, and the club is getting in first ? Or perhaps both the player and the management have had enough of each other and think that this is the best way.

Whatever , we need a good goalie to wear the No1 or No13 shirt a.s.a.p.

Notice that , yet again , I do not assume that Mr Coleman will make Danny Alcock No1.

Jon Smith, Paul Howarth . . . they haven't improved in the last year. Steve Flitcroft . . . he has, and I'm surprised he's on his way.

Hacker . . . if Flynn is staying , well O.K. , but I'd rather see Robbie Williams go than Steve Halford. No offence meant to Robbie , but we're talking honestly here.

On a positive note , can we please have some confirmation of who's staying ?

For me , it's got to include Alcock , Butler , Roberts , Brown , McEvilly , Cavanagh , Prendergast , Jagielka , Mullin and A.N.Other who could (if only !) be a combination of Lutel James and Lee Madin up front. And I don't have a problem with Paul Cook being around to control things from on the pitch (far preferable than having him trying to control things from OFF the pitch).

Sentiment out , quality in. But let's give every good wish to those fine players who have helped Stanley to get to where they are today . . . confirmed front-runners in the top half of the Conference.

I have been one of Jonny Smith's biggest fans over the years and he was a very, very good defender, and still is BUT he isn't good enough for us in my opinion. He maybe the best header of the ball in the league and maybe in most leagues even in the football league but the conference has changed you need to be very technical and good on the ball and this which you all should agree with me isnt one of Jonathon's skills and he will even say that.

It is similar to the Lutel situation, these players have been fantastic servants to the club and I personally wish them the very best and thank them for their effort and commitment to the club :)

Right i've listened to it back. Here are the key points Coley made about departures:

making room for new players

sorry to see them go - but they're the ones who could go (contracts etc)

regards them as friends - but club needs to move on

squad needs to be smaller because of POOR HOME CROWDS. money etc.

Players will have no problem finding new clubs

John Smith - shining example to club - always learning gives 100% asset for another club

Lutel - good times with him - he has to move on though

All his (Colemans) decisions nobody elses

Targets set. speaking to a few over next couple of weeks

Thinks the club underachieved this year - consistancy a problem.

Admits hes made some mistakes this year - presure told towards the end

Do you still enjoy being manger? - I love it, want more success etc.

More players may leave. Depending on offers.

Perhaps all those who asked me to give it a rest when I was warning about the consequences of low attendances will believe me now. This is a direct consequence of being one of the worst-supported professional clubs in the country.

Very disturbing things to hear. I can only see the club going backwards with this negative attitude. The squad, quality wise, was already threadbare IMHO so to reduce numbers further, presumably selling some of our better players(Quote "offers"), seems suicidal to me.

The attendances have been poor this year, yes. That I feel is because people like me, who support another club, have been less inclined to come when available due to the lack of progression made since last season.

The squad, essentially, is pretty good but I think we were all expecting some higher quality additions following on from the cup run last year that would really give us a chance of competeing at the top. They weren't forthecoming. Lets have it right, if your coughing up the current admission prices you want some entertainment for your hard earned. You can agree or not, I dont really care, thats just how it is.

Possibly more importantly, where is the Clayton End roof???? I understand a penny saved and all that but how do you expect people to continue to turn up and freeze to death and get pi55ed wet through during the winter months?? The whole situation has, in my opinion, made the club look 'tin pot' and has degenerated into a complete farce.

Its only my opinion again but I think this is a classic 'build it and they will come' scenario. Sort the roof out ASAP, stop the crazy talk of getting rid of our best players and make some quality additions and lets see what happens. If we get a good squad of 20 together, minus the mid season nomads and misfits I think Stanley can make a proper challenge and get people interseted again. A 'big name' summer signing would help a lot. I cant believe the Payton opportunity was passed up but it was. Someone of that ilk would help a lot.

And...., FFS, please get some advertising of fixtures done. How much could it possiby cost to get some sort of big board on the main road likw what Burnley have advertising the next fixture?? I think that alone would pay for itself and add a few to the gate very quickly. At the moment the only thing that seems professional about the club is the wages they will be paying!!!

AccyMad 28-04-2005 10:02

Payton opportunity? - Payton liability more like. We certainly do not need the likes of him at Stanley. If you think he would have been a 'big name' signing you're off your rocker! i would agree that the club has progressed, however id like 2 think how people think it could progress any more, if the attendances stay the same???

personally i dont think the Clayton End would make that much of a difference!

Of course i would like to see it built and for a few games attendances would increase as people would want to have a look, however i honestly think that unless we can sustain a top 3 place throughout the season then the attendance will stay the same!, unless we have another FA cup run, or play some teams with a large following!

Of course a roof over the Clayton end would make a difference. I know quite a few people who will not go and watch Stanley if it is raining, and I am sure that there are a lot of people with nothing to do on a Saturday would not even think of going to watch Stanley if it looked like raining, but would go if there was a roof to shelter under. We usually get around 1200 for home games when the opposition do not bring many, all supposedly faithfull Stanley supporters who never miss a game. Why was it then we only got 400 on Tuesday for a cup final ? Was it because it was raining ? Was it because season ticket holders had to pay ? Or was it because some of the faithfull supporters couldn't be bothered ?

aaaaaw come on ... THERE IS A ROOF AT STANLEY

You cant say people wont come because no roof.. if they want to stay dry then over half the ground is covered and better views from the sideline.. even the management are there :)

A roof is better and will increase the atmosphere.. According to the supporters club website its being built in june.... haha theres more chance of Rory signing for Chorley than the roof getting built this summer.... IMHO

A roof wont bring in more fans... people arn't sat at home wiht nothing to do on a saturday who will discover the clayton end has a roof and decide to start supporting stanley...

Simple fact is.. theres no money to be made in putting a roof on the clayton end... thus.... well i will let you work it out :)

personally i would love to see a roof on there.. would up the atrmosphere ten fold...

Liability?? Why's that then, maybe you can elaborate?? Even if he isn't the most reliable guy off the pitch the point was he would certainly have considerably boosted the gate if nothing else. You know, bums on seats love!! If you think his drinking habits are a problem then maybe you dont get out much because if you did you would surely agree that he can be no worse than several of the current crop(two who are being released incidentally),who can regularly been seen out on the pop.

There is a roof over the seated area, there is a roof over the Whinney Hill side of the ground, but some people do not want to sit down, some people do not want to have a restricted view on the Whinney Hill side. OF COURSE putting a roof over the Clayton end will increase the attendance. You say it yourself, it will up the atmosphere ten fold, if there is a better atmosphere then more people will be inclined to come. Fair weather supporters who like to stand behind the goals and don't come when it is raining will come, even if it looks like rain. If there is a better atmosphere this gives the team more encouragement, which in turn, should make them perform better and perhaps get better results, which will then attract more supporteres making a better atmosphere, giving the team more encouragement, making them play even better and getting better results, which will attract more supporters making a better atmosphere, etc etc etc etc

Jeff is right. I know because I myself have missed games this year because the weathers been bad and I prefer standing behind the goals. It needs sorting.

Kipax, I know you are Mr Accy Stanley and obviously try to remain diplomatic, but if what you say is right then its a disgrace. I think you tend to find that people too close to a situation are sometimes blinkered and I believe that goes for a few on here. Your too nice, too understanding. I dont give a damn. Its like expecting supporters to provide tele's for the bar. Its crap.

I have read in another thread that Eric has a plan that includes league football?? Well, IMHO, if the club cant organise putting a roof on one of the stands, at what is a fairly poor ground even at the current level, then I would suggest forgetting all about such far flung fantasies.

How can you look at a roof, shelter, a basic necessity to keeping dry, as a vehicle for profit??

Its ridiculous.

At the end of the day the club has made excellent progress over the past few years, but now is thetime to drive on, not start panicking about necessary expenditure. Are we heading for the Football League or the lower league??

Fair comment there, T M.

There is no room for sentimentality in sport, as John Coleman will no doubt find, if the club doesn't progress. He is doing the right thing in clearing out to bring in new talent.

I did last year. the one opposite the bar and small one in corner where both provided by me. I also fixed the one over the ladies toilet door which isn't even plugged in.

myself, budmak and uk cowboy fixed them up on the walls.

I think a roof would boost attendance. We're not blessed with the best weather up here and standing on the terrace can get hard at times.

I think that the point Staveros is making is that it shouldn't be up to the supporters to provide what are really basic fixtures in any clubhouse. It should be done by the Club.I have to agree with him on that;we all appreciate the expense and time that the Supporter's club have put into these things, but at the end of day,why didn't the club pay for them?Surely private functions throughout the year would have covered the cost of a couple of tellies???

Re: Players in, Players out????

A lot of development on the ground has taken place in recent years ... extending the terracing, seated areas on the clubhouse side of the ground and so on. All of this has been done on the basis that attendances will rise in the future because (1) the club is progressing on the pitch and (2) the facilities are a lot better for the people who come to games. Putting a roof on the Clayton End will improve attendances because, as has been said, it does very cold and wet in the winter. I can't get my lad to come when the weather's bad. He loves coming to the matches, but not to the point of getting soaked or having to sit down and watch the game from the sidelines.

Maybe the roof will add 100 to the attendances, maybe more in bad weather, but it depends much more on what happens on the pitch.

IMO our attendances have been at their 'true' level this season. It was last season that attendances were abnormally high and largely because of the FA Cup run. It was our first season in the Conference with a side that had been very successful on the pitch, we had a lot of TV coverage from our first Conference game to our Cup match against Huddersfield and so it was easy to get people interested in coming to Stanley games.

It was always going to be harder in the 2nd season and without the lure of FA Cup glory, we've gone back to our base support. A roof and another FA Cup run will help, but the club need to do a lot more to get people to Stanley games and particularly kids. Put Stan the Monkey and the Junior Reds debacles behind us and get the players into a different school each week armed with free kids tickets for the next Stanley match.

Gary Roberts is better than Howell IMO, he is absolute ace

i also think Roberts is ace and better than howell but it will be good to have rory and gary starting and someon on the bench who can change the game if needed.

After the abuse he took from some of our fans that shall remain nameless, when halifax played at the IES, I would think that dean howell wouldn't even consider coming here.

It was quite disgraceful.

Re: Players in, Players out????

Last night I spoke to someone who's on the inside at the Shay. He says that most of the players are glad to see the back of Dean Howell ; he is not, apparently a team player , he's lazy , won't train and is a disruptive influence.

Remind anyone of another ex-Halifax Town player who was ill-advisedly brought into Stanley, initials JJ ?

Look guys , if we're in need of a winger called Deano , there's a certain gentleman - name of Calcutt - who's had expensive double-hernia surgery , is bordering on match-fit , who can play on either side, and who'd be welcomed back with open arms by most of us.
