Todays game

Having just arrived back to much abuse (coz Wigan won) I have to say I was more than disappointed today, not only with the numbers in the crowd (i think 1300 + but tannoy was dodgy) but also with the way we played. up until we scored, we seemed to want the ball and I thought Exeter were ordinary if not a lot dirty. Referee was very poor and would not give us anything. i lost count of the number of times Paul Mullin was leant all over and not given a free kick. However, once Exeter equalised, the defence seemed disjointed and the worst offender for me was Williams. I thought he was poor today, slipping all over the place. On the plus side, Mangan looked useful, the goalie (whatever his name is) looked good and could not be faulted for the goals IMHO. and Brown looked good as well. Again IMHO I think Paul Mullin is a yard too slow for this league, OK he is a great target man, but he did not seem much of a threat except for heading on long balls to Mangan. I would suggest to JC that maybe we need another defender and a tall attacker - oh and a permanent goalie would be nice.

P.S. a big thank you to the Non League Newspaper after I won 2 adult season tickets Yippee

Paul Mullin knockers back again. Pathetic. Please be made aware of his goal scoring record and then come back with a VALID response to Stanley's problems. It aint Paul Mullin fault that's for sure!!!

Match report now on the official site. ;)

I have to echo Outback Ozzy's comments about Williams. I've bitten my lip for the first 4 games of the season, but how he continues to get in the team defies me.
Unless he was playing today because Welch was injured, Williams must be doing something for the manager that we don't know about!

And while I'm on a rant.... if Roberts backs out of one more challenge, even challenages where he's the obvious favourite to win, I'm going to run on the pitch and slap him silly! We need players who are committed, not nancy boys who prance about all afternoon.

Oh yeah.... the crowd was rubbish again too!

I thank you! ;)

Re: Todays game

Paul Mullin got MOTM and I think deservedly.. He wasn't even brought to the club to score goals and that isn't his only role.. I thought he was superb today doing what he does best.. He got to just about every ball and nodded them on for Andy Mangan.. (Just like he used to do with Lutel) Unfortunatly Andy then got brushed off every ball by the bigger defenders and thats where we stopped.. However I think a little more experience and he will learn how to get past these guys and start banging them in..

As for Mullin being slow.. Well he was quickest to pounce on the ball and score our only goal..

In a nutshell... We had no options without him.. none at all..

The problem does not lie with the players. We have a potentially leathal talent pool. The problem lies with the management selection and tactics deployed, fire all will if you wish, but listen to the silent majority who mutter under their concerns quitely. The goal keeping situation is nothing short of comical, we had a perfectly good keeper who was allowed to leave........why??

IMHO The book rests with Mr Coleman, but I'm sure he knows and understands that!

Hello new poster here...I was at the game today and thought we were generally the better side, but why was Welch dropped for Williams?

Re: Todays game

Some thoughts: The system the management tend to favour has become tedious and boring; some of us have been saying for years now that Williams is a liability at centre half and costs us quite a few goals per season. If he had two broken legs, a hernia and mad footballer disease Coley would still pick him there; the goalkeeping situation is unbelievable and, whilst ill-luck has played its part, not enough attention to it was given pre-season by the powers-that-be; we were the equal, if not better, than a hugely disappointing Exeter side who will be lucky to make the play-offs and who celebrated with their fans at the end as if they'd won the European Cup but had to watch them steal away with the points because of the above and other failings. I have the utmost admiration for John Coleman and what he has done for Stanley but currently, under his management, the club is stagnating and gates will continue to decline.

Hmmm... some good points being made.

We do always seem to play the same game type, whatever formation we play. I heard some wit say today, "why don't Stanley play a long ball for a change", to which everyone around us was in fits of laughter. One dimensional play makes us very predictable to play against.

Yes Adam , it does .

As I was working on Saturday afternoon , I'd be grateful for some confirmation as to who actually played in goal for us against Exeter City.

The Match Report mentions a player called Jones.

Surely not . . .

I have to agree that as long as we persist with the long ball we will never challange for glory in this league. For a start we are very rarely tall enough to compete with other teams central defenders, Paul does his best but is constantly at the mercy of cynical shirt pulling shoulder hanging defenders and very rarely gets any protection from niave refs.
The move that led to the goal today was sublime and if we attacked teams like that all the time I would have Champions 2006 printed on my shirt right now in anticipation of our inevitable glory. Keep the ball on the floor, use the width of the pitch and pass and move. We have the skill to do this as the goal showed so lets get on with it

Despite letting in two, the new keeper was superb.

IMO, Rocky lost us the match, he was s***e today.... why do we persist with him??

Dunno... where were you stood?

I've seen all the games so far this season and I thought Saturday's performance was the best we've played so far. However, there are a number of things that scream out for change, in my opinion.

1. The goalkeeper situation, although unlucky in some ways, has become farcical. This lad from Charlton looks a good prospect, but he's not here for very long and if the club knew that Jones had a potential serious problem, shouldn't the manager have been looking for someone else during the Summer?

2. The defence is potentially better than last season, but Williams looks well out of his depth. I know he's been played out of position in games this season, but all too often he's rash and undisciplined. Flynn, Welch and Tretton (if he ever returns) are all better defenders, so why is he constantly in the side? My thinking is, once all the others are fit, Williams will be moved in to midfield and act as the ball winner.

3. The midfield is lightweight and too easily over-run. You can't play Craney in a 4-4-2 formation, it's as simple as that, although he has appeared more committed this season. You need a ball winner in the centre of midfield and although Jagielka has been off his game in the early matches, perhaps if he was played in the middle he'd solve a few problems? Roberts has been a major disappointment and at the moment doesn't look up to the task.

4. Up front Mullin thrives on crosses and apart from the one on Saturday, he hasn't been getting any. I think Paul may struggle this season if we don't have anyone to provide for him. Mangan has enormous potential and he gives us something we don't have... pace up front. However, he's very young and experienced Conference defenders know how to hold him off and play him out of the game. We really do need another experienced goalscorer to partner Mullin and someone to provide quality crosses.

5. To say the players are training for hours every day, I've been disappointed by the lack of variety at corners and set-pieces. Free-kicks in particular seem devoid of creativity, with so many going harmlessly out of play. Likewise, we seem to be devoid of variety in our other play as well. The 'big punt' seems to dominate our play and against decent defences it's largely ineffective as well. To say we have a manager, an assistant manager and a full-time coach, you'd think we'd be able to do better than big kick tactics wouldn't you?

I can't remember coming on this messageboard criticising individuals before, but this has been brewing inside me for weeks now. Remember that football always produces differing opinions and these are mine. Discussion is the lifeblood of an messageboard, so where better to post my opinions? ;)

oooo Garinda, you edited that before I could pick out your mistake!!!!! ;)

I wonder if jaggers goal is a record, I know its not the fastest goal ever but must be up there and def must be fastest one this season. 7 seconds from KO was the report on BBC live updates, then penalty scored 15 mins later and we give 2 away!

Adam, I thank you for picking on me for a change -you plonker, not every one is so perfect to remember whatchamacallits name oops sorry Darren Randolph - which BTW you did not mention in your post(s). And as you were at some ****e game for Radio Lancs, how can you possibly comment on other peoples comments on this thread. As TM and others have said, Robbie was ****e, and IMHO Paul Mullin is a yard too slow, my thoughts not everybody elses and I stand by what I typed. I appreciate not everyone can get to the match every week due to work commitments. Like you I work some weekends for the emergency services. I get to as many matches as I can home or away, But I do not pretend to know everyones name, even though I support Stanley, and BTW Kipax just to correct a little point you mentioned, Mangan put the ball through for Brown to chase who crossed for Mullin to burst the roof of the net.

Re: Todays game

I agree with comments re the Exeter game, especially re Williams's performance and the fact that Roberts pulled out of several challenges - not what you pay your money to see. Although Paul Mullin missed several chances, at least he tries & fights for the cause. It's disappointing that the squad in my opinion seems poorer than last season - we've lost Rory, McEvily, Halford, Smith, etc & the replacements seem lightweight.and not good enough.

Shame we couldn't hold on to a 2 goal lead today, I'm hoping the Management team have some ideas on how to improve the team's performance and hopefully the attendances at home will improve.

Keep the faith!

I was no more than 3 feet away when Roberts crossed for Mullin to score.. the photograph of mullin scoring shows Roberts on the byline covering the shot.

There is no if,but or maybe.. Roberts crossed and Mullin scored
