Great signing?

Coley hoping to sign Edwards in January, according to the BBC sport web. What a coup that would be!

Don't you mean Premiership quality?

Not just yet as he would be in Wigan's starting eleven but he has the potential to be...

Sorry - I was thinking you were under the impression that Wigan were still in the Championship - silly me!

Re: Great signing?

Edwards is a fantastic defender and he helped us so much for our win against Grays Ath. with his superb clearence right at the end.
He would be one of our best signings this season ...along with Darren Randolff,if we get him and Romi Boco.:)

Re: Great signing?

Maybe as I live in Wigan, I could have a word with Paul Jewell and put in a good word. Only joking, but damn right, it would be a hell of a coup for John Coleman if he can pull this one off. But how would it fit in with Cav etc?

maccawozzagod 08-12-2005 20:31

Re: Great signing?

to hell with Cav if this guy is better. Cav is also a quality player and is one of players who would get into most other conference sides. BUt, if a better player comes available then you have to be in it to win it

Outback Ozzy 08-12-2005 20:55

Re: Great signing?

Just been on the Wigan site, apparently he hasn't got a first team number unlike Kevin Lee who was with us for a month. So maybe the chances are even better then!

Re: Great signing?

Very, very interesting!

Edwards did have the no.35 shirt :)

(see squad numbers at the bottom of the screen here: http://www.premierleague.com/fapl.ra...ubDetail&id=68)

And it is not as though he is missing from the list for being on loan as that is also the case with no. 15 David Wright, on loan at Norwich.

Can't agree with the "to hell with Cav" comment. No player in a Stanley shirt deserves that. Edwards is primarily a centre-back who can play across the back line, not an out-and-out full-back so Cav is not automatically on the bench every time Edwards plays.

Even Jeff must admit that Darren Randolph and four defenders out of Cav, Edwards, Rocky, Welch, Tretton and Richardson is the best defence on paper that we've ever had. If this comes off and Randolph returns in January, I'd say Coley has got it sorted! :D

sorry, it would seem my to hell with cav comment was worded wrong. I didn't mean it literally, as what i meant was people's reputation and loyalty dont really count for much in football. If you can improve a position then go for it. Coley has proved in the past by wielding the axe on many a crowd favourite, bloody hell he was almost crucified by the crowd for his treatment of Lutel James. In case anybody else thinks I was having a go then I will re-iterate that I think Cav is a class act and deserves his place back in the team. He came to us with no reputation and would (if he did) leave us with a regular England place on his CV. HE IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE MOST RELIABLE AND TACTICALLY ASTUTE DEFENDER WE HAVE EVER HAD. But this type of class could not and would not warm the bench for us for any prolonged period of time.

We haven't got Darren Randolph yet, we haven't got Edwards yet, Tretton hasn't played yet (except on Tuesday) and I believe that Welch is only signed until the end of December. Yes I agree that on paper it looks a great defence as long as there is an organiser amongst them, I hope so. Time will tell.

Tretton played a blinder against Wigan pre-season while injured, Welchy signed till January

Good point Jeff and .. and .. isn't Boco only signed up until Jan, or has something changed there? I seem to remember that was the deal when he came. Be a darned good thing to handcuff him to the club until at least the end of the season!

We have Boco till the summer, ask Robney!

Tretton didn't play against Wigan. As far as I can remember he got injured after about 20 minutes against Burnley.

shakermaker 09-12-2005 22:27

Re: Great signing?

Tretton definately played the whole 90 against Wigan, i remember him goin down near the beginning aswel. anyway, may be wrong - dont realy care.
but i know he is one of if not the best centre half in the league so i cant wait till he plays :D

Sorry, SM, but I've just checked the team listing on the fishy site match report and he's not listed. Like you, I'm looking forward to his league debut with high expectations.

shakermaker 09-12-2005 23:24

Re: Great signing?

ah well, stand corrected!
the only problem i have is that Tretton will with no doubt replace Welchy, who has made some brilliant performances - id love to see Welchy and Tretts' at centre half...doubt Rocky will get dropped though.

Distracted 10-12-2005 08:36

Re: Great signing?

I agree Welchy doesn't deserve to be dropped he's been playing brilliantly and who's to say that Tretts is better than him anyway? I think the 2 of them at the back would be our best pairing but as you say Rocky would never be dropped.

if it aint broke don't fix it :)

Whalley Red 11-12-2005 12:07

Re: Great signing?

As a critic of Rocky in the past, when I still say that he deserved it, his performances when partnered with Welch have been virtually faultless. He had problems with his ball control on a couple of occasions yesterday, but what an 'assist' it would hae been if his bicycle kick had led to the second goal!

Whalley Red 20-12-2005 22:04

Re: Great signing?

Wigan are apparently just about to Austrian international centre-back Paul Scharner. His club have agreed a price, so it is a matter of agreeing personal terms.

With Edwards likely to be knocked further down the pecking order at Wigan as a result, maybe Coley's ambitious plan could be one step closer to fruition ;)

zayno14 21-12-2005 08:15

Re: Great signing?

do you think wigan will play him as a centre back though? I know its is his favoured position but he looks as comfortable at left back and with his size wigan may have taken note?

sparkie 21-12-2005 09:33

Re: Great signing?

I heard in the sports bar on saturday that he definately wants to stay, at least for the rest of the season.

IrishRed 21-12-2005 11:37

Re: Great signing?

personally id prefer to see coley sign a prolific goal scorer as mullin and brown dont seem to be scoring much

harwood red 21-12-2005 11:40

Re: Great signing?

The beauty is that we are able to get goals from various people on the pitch and mullin acts very well as the target man whilst deflecting the pressure off alot of the midfield, hence more goals coming from that area!

zayno14 21-12-2005 12:10

Re: Great signing?

Although a prolific goalscorer would be nice i wouldn't take mullin out of the team as he makes so many goals with his flick ons and strength by holding the ball up, the goals being scored isn't a problem for us as i am confident we can score in any game we play home or away, it was the defence as we were leaking to many but we look to have sured up n ow which is fantastic. We do not rely on one person to bag us our goals which other teams in the league do, twiss of morecambe, sills of aldershot and richards of woking, we are full of goals from people all around the team and even the bench which is also a nice luxury :)

IrishRed 21-12-2005 12:36

Re: Great signing?

but mullin is what 30 odd now we wont have for ever and when we get promoted goals from the midfield wont be good enough

zayno14 21-12-2005 12:44

Re: Great signing?

Teddy Sheringham is 36, he plays in the premiership! He as mullin doesn't rely on pace in his game, that is why he can play at the age is is. What is stopping Mullin carrying on for another 4/5 years as he relies on holding the ball up, heading the ball and using his football intelligence by getting into useful positions?

shakermaker 21-12-2005 13:45

Re: Great signing?

totally agree with you zayno but sorry to correct you, Teddy is 39!!
he'll be 40 before the season's over; legend!

According to the official site the club are looking to sign Phil Edwards permanently in the next few days.

This is indeed a fantastic signing and a real coup for the club. I can hardly believe it, as the lad is sheer class!!!

look at alan shearer how old is he?

Diesel 10-01-2006 16:30

Re: Great signing?

People have a go at Mullin when he's not scoring, forgetting that he is in fact a target man, and isn't really there to score goals, more to hold the ball up and help create them. The fact that he scored so many last season is a tribute to how good he really is. And whether he's 21 or 31, he's still a remarkably fit player, and spends more time on the pitch than any other of our players. Plus he seems immune to injuries, great player and a real asset to the club

IrishRed 10-01-2006 17:11

Re: Great signing?

but shearer and sheringham are quality mullin isnt as good as everyone says hes allways missing simple chances that brown/boco could put away easily as for signing edwards he is a good player and i would love to see the team a bit like this-
elliot
cav edwards tretton richardson
jaggers craney barry roberts
boco brown

IrishRed 10-01-2006 17:12

I agree with all that Harwood Red, Zayno, Shakermaker and Diesel have said about Paul Mullin and I wouldn't be surprised if he ended the season as our top scorer. His influence on the game is amazing - see what this Tamworth fan thought of him: http://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/fo...96&thread=1312.

zayno14 11-01-2006 06:32

Re: Great signing?

mullin is class, great credit to the club for signing edwards if it does happen, just underlines the ambition this club has..
