Re: todays game
GET IN THERE MULLIN LAD! 2-1 Stanley 91st minute! :D
|
Re: todays game
We were very lucky today. We did not deserve to win that game. It is even debateable whether we earned a draw, but that second goal from Mullin... Pick that out! What a corker of a bullet header.

Certainly not a brilliant game but what the heck - 3 points.
|
Re: todays game
If it is true and the FA catch wind of this then burton will be given the points.
|
Re: todays game
Scrappy play from us, and Burton played well, but what matters is the score at the final whistle, and three more points in the bag.:)
|
Re: todays game
Unfortunately I can't do a match report today as the website hasn't been updated yet and I only have an internet connection for a few minutes. I won't have another connection until Thursday, so there you go.
If I was to summarise the game today, I'd say that it was daylight robbery! Call the police! ;) |
Re: todays game
It was quite fraught at times, Burton played well they weren’t afraid to play the ball and they took possession at every opportunity, strong in the attack but failed to make it count. Stanley played a poor first half and should have been sharper on the ball, but the 2-1 score says to me that even though they’d played a scrappy game they won it fair and square. Goals win games and points bring promotion and in that they did both.
|
Re: todays game
I honestly think Burton were the better team today, and how they went away with nothing is beyond me. Still, 3 points are 3 points!
|
Re: todays game
I have seen us play bad a few times.. But today was up there with the real bad ones..
hahaha and we still got three points:) |
Re: todays game
Who got M.O.T.M I wouldn't like the job of picking one today

Re: todays game
How we came away with all the points today was a complete mystery. Burton were by far the better team today by an absolute mile, on the pitch and off it. We were totally out played, out battled and even more worryingly outwitted. Cloughy and his team had done their homework superbly and dominated the game from start to finish. Whatever formation they played worked and I only hope that super JC sorts the chaps out for the next game beacause thay looked shattered today. And in respect they have every right to be.
Gary Roberts was totally dominated, and it appeared to me as though he was just going through the motions, and come to think of it same goes for Rommy. I have never been PM's biggest fan but in the last 4/5 games he has been outstanding and a complete role model for all the boys in red, absolute class. So into March we go and if you read my previous posts (not that you will!!!) is looking as though it will be the most important month we have ever faced. In exactly fourteen days time we will know whether we are going to be a league team next season or just making up the numbers in non league footy again. It really is as simple as that. As a kid growing up playing football every night on the Peel Park I always wondered what it would be like for Accrington to have a 'proper' football team.........and I really hope that after all these years I will soon know! Anyway, well done Stanley, 8 in a row. Did feel sorry for Burton and their fans, though. |
Re: todays game
There's no pleasing some people!
Despite topping the table, on the verge of an historic promotion and playing some of the best football seen at the Crown / IES for many a year - some people still find time to complain! A Gentleman was on his way out - just before the final whistle - mouthing off about how Coley had got it wrong for not changing the midfield blah! blah! I asked where John was going to "magic up" such a player who would make a difference in a game played in a difficult swirling wind and with the limited choice he had available for today's game. The guy only wanted to moan - so I pointed out thta we were 13 points clear at the top and that credit must be given to the opposition (Burton played extremely well). He skulked off - missing the winning goal - how sad! As I've said before - "Keep the faith" because if you can still pick up points when you haven't played well...........? Come on Accy!!!!! and to the guy who left early - "All the Best"! |
Re: todays game
Why didn't Coley bring any subs on? he must have seen they weren't playing their best as we did

Yes the lads seemed jaded, but knowing the emotions I'm experiencing this season, it can only be worse for them. They are possibly the best team to have ever represented Stanley, (open to responses from the guys that saw the league teams). We've lost Barry and Jags in the last few weeks, and we're still winning games! Looking forward to Jags coming back, lot of nouse there. ON, STANLEY,ON |
Re: todays game
Yeh, here here for the the last post...
We made a lot of hard work for ourselves today, as other folk have already said they were the better side on the day... But, grinding out wins from lacklustre games is the play of a team with true grit 'n' determination! The game, play and team of CHAMPIONS!!!:engsmil: |
Re: todays game
Too many games in the last few weeks are taking their toll. Coley should rest most of the team on Tuesday night if it's allowed.
Brilliant result today though but, the luckiest ever. |

I did think that mully got the last though,,,,

Seeing Paul, first at Radcliffe when dominating Stanley, and then maturing with Stanley, like a fine wine. He runs his socks off every game, he and Lutel used to terrorise defences, not just with their skills but their work rate. This season he's scored goals that seem, to me, to have added to his game - the composure for the goal against Morecambe, and the one where his first touch in the penalty area made a goal out of nothing, again hammered home with composure. He's captained the side brilliantly for most of the season on the pitch. Anyway, PPG, glad you're learning sense, last 4/5 games???? ON STANLEY ON |
Re: todays game
robbie is banned next week for 2 games i think.
|
Re: todays game
Mullin had a good game today scoring a brace but the rest of the team didn't really get going..I thought burton played very very well and did not let us play our usual free flowing football and we have to give them credit for that...And to win it off a corner which wasn't a corner as it came of gary roberts was heartbreaking for them but that's football and another valuable win...All eyes on hereford stevenage on monday night live on sky...

I think Rommy's attitude is tops, not sure about the position. David Brown could be the Jimmy Greaves of Conference football. Roberts is the classic Welsh Wing Wizard (remember Cliff Jones?) Craney is the key to this side, and judging by Coley's after match priorities, he may agree. He's also come on a ton since coming here. But they're all a bit tired, inexperienced (apart from Brown), and need IMHO to get back to basics, that's what got us where we are. ON STANLEY ON |

Yes I agree that Burton </ST1:pwhere the better side, but they didn’t capitalise on a well fought battle. I also feel for <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<ST1<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = " /><st1:City w:st="on"><ST1:pBurton</ST1:p</st1:City> and their fans, it’s only a few weeks ago since they where battling a Premiership team and did so with pride and courage. <O:p So it’s got to be a wake up call for our lads not to let their guard down, there’s better teams than <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1:pBurton</ST1:p</st1:City> ahead of us. But at the end of the day it’s our team and they won, it may have been a slim victory, but it was won by two lads who put the ball in the back of the net. |

A good result today. I'm getting so excited now at the prospect of promotion :D
For where I live, there are three matches coming up I could get to, but grrrrr!! - for various reasons I probably won't be able get to   I am going to the match at Kidderminster though in April. Our final non-league game. :D I haven't been to a match for a while and it's going to be a great day! :) :Banane25: :not_ripe: Who else will be there? Dave |

Gotta say, prob worst performance I've seen this season from us, we allowed them to dominate the game, but, hey, if you play crap & still get the points, that's the sign of champions!
For me, you can still keep playing crap, as long as you get the points! |

PEEL PARK GHOST- "A proper team" I think there might be a few players from past Stanley teams take exception to that. I think all the teams from the reformation of Stanley in the late 1960s through the 70s-80s and 90s did the job to get where we are today and I think they all share a little in the glory and pride, as do all the supporters who were there through thick and thin. It,s a great thing that,s going to happen and well deserved by ALL.
|
Re: todays game
Yes Ossy Kid I hold my hands up, you are in your rights to correct me. One thing that hasn't been mentioned on here is how superbly Tretts has done. After a frustratingly long lay off he quietly slips into the team and plays as though he has been here for years, Quality!
I for one reckon he and Welchy have a fantastic understanding which could prove invaluable in the coming weeks. Lets all hope this potential team of legends can do us even prouder!!! PS....Tommy Mcqueen is a closet Barrow Fan!!!!! |
Re: todays game
Burton-dominate: all in the same sentence? Yet we won 2-1. Persistance & tenacity wins games & playing till the ref says the game is over. Several have said Cloughy was robbed but they played for not enough crucial minutes pro rata to goal chances as Stanley did. Remember we are a team all want to beat & will try to stalemate our game. Ok Burton played well & Rob made his mark as MOM but thats what he is paid for. Uninspiring? Those who departed on 88 minutes or less missed why we are top of the league! Expect more grinding out performances before the league is won especially with Hereford, Greys etc still to play. Its the points at the end that count now.
|
Re: todays game
We've been grinding out a few results in our current 8-game winning streak in the conference ... particularly when we play in wind! Plenty of stats to show that Burton did dominate:
Shots on target Stanley: 4 Burton: 13 Shots off target Stanley: 3 Burton: 9 http://www.sportinglife.com/football...ch/142274.html But it's the three points that matter and as we've shown against so many teams, there is a clinical edge to our finishing that I've not seen from any other team this season. Well done lads for grinding out the win and providing some entertainment in the second half at least! |
Re: todays game
Three games in eight days certainly looked to have taken their toll, and just how important is Andy Todd (is Godd) to this side.
It's a good job Dick Turpin :Banane32: was playing today ;). I think the left and right posts at the Coppice end had a fantastic game today both playing a blinder in the first half :). When we play Southport on Tuesday (what another game!! ) it would be a good idea to have a few shots, it did seem today that the only time we strung any passes together was when we were in or around Burtons penalty area and had a clear sight of goal. There was also one or two Rory-esque type 'dives' when it would have been far easier to actually get the ball., and it must have been obvious by that time that the ref was useless and hadn't given either side anything. Still he did give us a corner that should have been a goal kick and the rest they say is history. Anyway its time to feed Black Bess and polish the flintlocks for soon we must ride out again. 2-1 fantastic:not_ripe: :not_ripe: :not_ripe: Just think though if we can play like this and win we will probably never lose again, FANTASTIC. Watch out Chelsea Oh, and Robbie Elliot, the guy is phenominil(damn) I mean phenomanal(damn) that is phinomanil(blast), he's a really good keeper. |
Re: todays game
just got in :D
to summarise today - we saw proof that we are a league winning side. end of. a team that can play that awful with a ref that didnt know what the frig he was doing and come away with 3 points deserves to win the league in all fairness we were played off the park; but at the end of the day we did the business, burton had around 20 good attacks and converted one goal. we had 3 attacks; converted 2 of them. |
Re: todays game
We had a day off today, Robbie was woeful at the best. We left the ground about 5 mins from the end, cold and downhearted only to be told we had scored in the 91st minute. Nevermind if we can win when we play so badly we must have a chance this season
|
Re: todays game
anyone who saw yesterday's game will say the same things, and full credit to burton who stopped us playing and at the same time looked very impressive.
but how can anyone leave early with a game at 1-1? having endured the 90 odd minutes that had gone before, the paul mullin goal that got us the three points will go down as one of those great stanley memories of all time. one of those split second moments of pure joy, such a rush of emotion as we see the ball hit the back of the net. we'll talk about that goal for years to come. there's still a long way to go before we can start any celebrations, but today was yet another small step towards where we all want to be... isn't football brilliant... |
Re: todays game
Didnt Man Utd win a european cup final scoring 2 in injury time.. summat like that.. imagine missing that cus ya wanted to beat traffic
3 points is the bee all and end all now.. doesnt matter how we get them even if we rob them (sorry rob hehe) But I am still going to moan if I sit through a dire performance, Just like I commend if sat through a brilliant game. I WANT TO BE A LEAGUE PHOTOGRAPHER! :) |
Re: todays game
Totally agree with the last 2 posts!!
We are making history and people want to leave a few mins early just for the sake of a few mins (doesnt all add up) Not having a go fettler but why do u leave early? Supose if you pay your money u can leave in the first min for all i care :) |

Re: todays game
Remember everyone - Burton have robbed us in the last few minutes on enough occasions in the past - about time we did it to them... If they werent good enough to finish with the amount of chances we allowed them to have, tough....

Re: todays game
Well done, the lads (with a bit of help from above in this case). The lack of substitutions was a puzzle but Coley knew best, didn't he? Must say the deterioration in the form of Gary Roberts is worrying but then the performances of the likes of Andy Tretton and Ian Craney are reassuring. I felt sorry for the Burton team who played very well but not their fans who proved themselves, yet again, tiresome, loudmouthed losers. To see the downbeat, miserable looks on their faces as they trooped off at the end was almost as brilliant as the winning goal!
|
Re: todays game
The guy who gave Coley the gob full before leaving early wasn't about 5'10" to 6 foot, thin, and wearing a black jacket and jeans with grey almost white hair was he?
If it was, he was the guy that Coley offered to give him his money back earlier in the season so he could get lost and put it to better use on say a new pair of specs!!! It was very funny, however, removing the guy from the dugout area whilst trying not to laugh in his face wasn't!!! |
Re: todays game
Quote:
"Gary Roberts' deterioration in form" I think this is not the case; Gary is now man marked from start to finish by 2 or 3 players in every game thanks to the exposure on the telly! Just watch the Morecambe game back...Chris 'jesus' Blackburn was never away from Gary's heels. It's hard for the lad but as long as he can keep getting the crosses in and providing spectacuar free kicks I dont think there's a problem. |
Re: todays game
Interesting quote from Cloughie in todays Non League paper
"We were robbed... but it shows why Accrington are going into the league & we are not." There speaks a man who knows, wonder if his dad told him? RIP |
Re: todays game
Yea, we did rob them but I for one don't give a damn. I have bad memories of Burton's fans from a few seasons ago at their place and on Saturday they proved that they really haven't improved. Someone in the bar on Saturday said it was an embarrassing display by our lads, thats as maybe but if it means taking 3 points off a team like Burton I'd be embarrassed like that any day of the week
|
Re: todays game
I still remember that prat from a couple of seasons ago, wishing us good luck against Bournemouth after they'd dumped us out of the FA Trophy. We went down a couple of weeks later, and drew 1-1. The same fella turned round and said to us, "I hope Colchester batter ya!". What an idiot...
|
Re: todays game
I went to the first game for quite a while on Saturday.
My thoughts? We were played off the ground. Burton beat us to nearly every ball. I was stood behind the burton goal for both halves and I glad I have decent eyesight cause I reckon 80% of the game was played in the far half of the pitch. What I struggled to work out was why our lads persisted with the long high ball when the wind was causing it so much trouble. basically the ball was loosing all its lateral speed and dropping almost vertically out the sky so it was really difficult for the lads to knock it on for someone to run onto it. Burton on the other hand tended to keep it on the deck to good effect. I reckon Coley didn't subsitute as it was that bloody cold he was punishing the lads that were out there for not playing like we know they can ;) Still a superb end to the game which sent us all home cosy and warm inside. I'm still trying to find out who has been credited with the goal? I thought it was Mullin but in the NOTW the tiny write up said Roberts but the results page credited both to Paul? |
Re: todays game
I originally thought it wass Rocky, but apparently it was Mullys
|
Re: todays game
I thought rocky too ???????
|
Re: todays game
Mully said afterwards in the clubhouse that it was definately his but was a bit miffed that sky sports news had only credited him with one

Also I've found leaving Stevenage early is a good move at times as you have to walk past 1,000 gloating home fans to get to the corner flag. Mind you at 1-1 you've gotta be daft. |
