Not that good a day :(

Off the moterway and down the A roads.. stopped in a traffic jam... WHAM!

"I only took my eye off for two minutes" said the dopey git who ran into the back of us... Took ten minuts to close the boot of the car... everyone with aches and pains that miraculously dissapeared at 2-0 up :)

Oh well... claim time....

Oh heck, hope everyone is ok!! I often take my eye off the road for two minutes... not. Does the dopey git not realise how far you can travel in two minutes!!

It wasn't that woman, who was caught putting her makeup on with both hands this week whilst driving, that did it?

Glad you're all ok.

Hope you're ok. A similar thing happened to Chris last year, his car was a write off and the other guy accepted full responsibility but it still took about three months before they sorted the insurance out. So, good luck!

Re: Not that good a day :(

Thanks.. Car seems drivable although the boot is usless.. Also I have to worry what hidden damage might be done and how useless the back in is now if I was to be rearended again..

Me and wife in front with Iain, Budmak and Will in the back.. all complained of aches and everyone said it would be worse in morning.. However Julie and I are OK today.. havent spoken to the back three

Just going through insurance stuff now.. guess i gotta go through all the rigmarole now,... Anyays all ok and car usable so... life goes on... thanks for the thoughts people:)

It's good to hear that no-one was seriously injured but a total pain that your car was damaged. Sometimes the effects of the aches and pains seem to get worse as the days go by. Good luck with the insurance claim. Don't let them fob you off.

I see a nice new lens on its way to your house Kipax!

Seriously, take it easy, I was hit from behind in 99, I still get pain across my shoulders from it.

Go to teh docs and get a referral to physio. They will make sure your muscles get back full travel etc.

Shame that EF600 was damaged, wasn't that your favourite lens:rolleyes:

Re: Not that good a day :(

Seriously Tony, despite our little asides, get to the docs & get checked up. Back injuries dont always show up & can come out several days later. If you do finish up making a claim for personal injury it will strengthen the claim having this on yourmedical records & the doc wont charge for the exam, but may get you a quicker referal to physio to put things right. I got lamped a year last Sept while parked by a car travelling at full speed so know what you r going thru. "Fill the form in including your name & address-excuse me but didn't you send me the damn thing?"

Insurance company been on today .. I get the feeling they can smell blood and it aint mine.... "anyone hurt".."no"..."are you sure, we have claim forms for everyone"

there gonna take the car away to be assesed and I get a hire car that I can keep until the claim finished and for a week or so after i get paid if i want.. there falling over themselves to help me and nothing too much trouble... I have never made a claim before and I am surprised at the speed and help I am getting and the advice and everything else. really truly looking after me..

www.elephant.co.uk cheap and very very good it seems:)

Look on the bright side Kipax, you won't need to spend any money getting that spare key cut now.

All that matters is that no one was hurt. A car is a tin box with wheels, thats all.

Re: Not that good a day :(

Just been informed.. Car is a write off.. which means i will get book price and a bit more and thats a lot less than the car is worth to me... i had a full service every 6 mths for the 3 yrs i had it.. it was in tip top condition and no problems...

Very expensive day out then :(

entwisi 30-03-2006 11:56

Re: Not that good a day :(

thats one of teh problems and the reason a lot of peopek 'tweak' their claim. Otherwise you end up well out of pocket for something that wasn't your fault

Is it bad? sometimes you can buy it back off them for a good price and do the repair yourself, just cause its been written off doesn't mean its unsafe - its just not cost effective to repair, but the prices at the large repair centres are high especially when insurance is involved as well

KIPAX 30-03-2006 12:17

Re: Not that good a day :(

I asked about that.. next stage is sending all my documents in.. he said add a letter saying you want to retain it..

The car is driveable and we came back from hereford no problem.. but presumably insurance write it off so it not roadworthy/ legal ? i dont know about these things... and if i get it sorted does it effect the insurance quote next time.. as in for a car thats been a write off.

I would use as is without the fixing but i suppose that wont be legal.. maybe better in motering section this now:)

entwisi 30-03-2006 12:44

Re: Not that good a day :(

If they allow you to buy it it will be clasified as either Cat C or D (C being worse than D) Insurance companies do load policies for cars that are previous Cat C/D write offs. Also remember that effectively it's future resale value is peanuts as a HPI check will show it as a previous write off.

They are legal as long as it passes an MOT. You can use it withouut fixing as long as it doesn't have any sharp edges etc and all lights work correctly etc.

One thing that may have happened is that the boot floor may be twisted. This can affect the tracking of the rear wheels so make sure you know what you are doing if you buy it back with a view to use long term.

K.S.H 30-03-2006 16:30

Re: Not that good a day :(

Like Entwisi said they only have to pass an mot and not be in a dangerous condition ie sharp or jagged edges, there perfectly legal then, As an example lets say its a hatchback and the tailgate is damaged, you would be looking around £1000 plus for one of these probably more after fitting and painting, if the cars only worth about £2000 they could say its not worth spending that on a £2000 car and write it off, you buy it back and get one from a scrap yard for £100. I dont know what car it is or the value and extent of damage, don't take the figures I put personal :)
Not sure about the insurance but i wouldn't think so, yaeh its right about it being registered on the hpi check but if your going to keep it that won't matter and a lot of people dont check the cars out before buying them.
Have they give you a price yet? their book prices are always in their favour, the'll probably ring you with an offer, make sure you refuse the 1st one

Re: Not that good a day :(

Buy it back for £150 then get it sorted for £200, go on holiday and forget it ever happened :)

big al 30-03-2006 21:56

Re: Not that good a day :(

A write off is usually when the value of the repair is more than 75% of the cars book value. Bear in mind that most bodyshops see ££££ with insurance jobs. Try taking it to Harry Ormerod on Pilot St & ask him to assess the damage. He repaired an Ibiza for me that the insurance boys wanted to write off, well within the 75% percentage & did a damn good job so that the Insurance not only kept the car on the road but paid for the repair too. Something to be said for the old indipendent bodyshop guys!
