Todays game

Ok, nobody seems to want to talk about today's disappointment, but we have to give credit to Grays for outplaying and outbattling us all over the pitch, especially in midfield. Although Rob seems to be carrying an injury at the moment he saved another 3 "certain" goals towards the end.
It was good to see the Stanley fans giving the Grays players a warm ovation at the finish.
I think we need to get Jaggers back playing in midfield - was he on the bench today?

Bradshaw Boy 01-04-2006 17:53

Re: Todays game

Grays were the better team today by quite a distance. Defensively our midfield was non-existent throughout the game so our back four was all over the place despite the odd last ditch tackle. Robbie Elliott MOM for 2 home games out of 3 tells you something. But, that said, a draw for Hereford brings the points required down to 8.

Wynonie Harris 01-04-2006 18:01

Surely the points required total is now down to 6? We're on 81, Hereford can only get 86. 2 wins from 5 matches.

Grays are the best team I've seen this season. They seem to be a very organised team. I, for one, would not fancy playing them over the 2 legs of the playoffs.

no - it's 86 - for your licence fee today the BBC haven't updated their website yet.

Surely not? Hereford are currently on 68 points. They have 6 matches left. 3 x 6 = 18. 68 + 18 = 86...or am I missing something here?

Credit to grays, they played some slick football..Maclean and Poole looked two good players, credit to ROb he made some fantastic saves and Craney's goal was another fine run and strike. 2 wins away...Come on stanley...

As somebody said, credit to Grays today. Thought Mclean was excellent, strong, quick and plenty of good crosses. great goal by Craney. His celebration was funny. He went up to a section of the crowd who had been giving him some stick!! Was Jagielka injured today. He wasn't on the subs bench...Thought the defending today was terrible, and i didn't like the way the players were arguing with each other, blaming each other. Elliott again saved us.. 6 points, 2 wins. On stanley on and good luck to morecambe on tuesday! ;)

We were outplayed today, but to be honest, I've always thought Grays are one of the best in this league. Don't forget, they have a few games in hand, they're league position is a false one at the moment

Tin Monkey 01-04-2006 18:44

Re: Todays game

You're right RR, the defending was terrible, but it's in midfield where we lost it. Both Boco and Craney are forward looking players and we don't have an enforcer figure to sit in front of the defence. Time and time again this afternoon Grays ran at us and ran straight through us.

I also agree that McLean was excellent this afternoon and I said so in the match report, which will be online as soon as the site has been updated.

Seriously though, you could tell there was a mutual respect, and if Morecambe or Halifax fail to go up, I'd like Grays to go up. Great fans, and they play good, attacking football.

Re: Todays game

In an after-match interview on Radio Lancashire John Coleman blamed Rob Elliot for Grays' second goal. Personally I blame Coleman for not substituting an obviously injured payer, the lad could hardly move and was clearly in pain every time he kicked the ball. Let's hope he's fit for the next week's game at Forest Green.

I thought stanley were the better team in the first half...the had much of the posetion and more of the ball.
The chances in the first half could have put us at least 3 up, but hey! it's a game of 2 halves, they came out with a rocket up their arses and give us a lesson about complacency!

Re: Todays game

The midfield wasn't the best but some of the blame has to go to Coleman, Elliot looked injured from something like the tenth minute when he came out've the box to make a tackle. Also Mangan for Brown must be the worst sub of the season so far... I don't think Mangan did a single thing right, apart from once he had the ball and DIDN'T lose it, saying that though he was near the corner flag and somehow managed to find a pass all the way back to the half way line. Stanley went downhill from when he came on ... or was all this just me ?

Re: Todays game

I thought the sportsmanship was tremendous from stanley applauding the gray`s team! The managerial staff on the pitch of gray`s were they good aswell reconising that the stanley fans were applauding them and not stanley which they did the same , but wasnt the same for they grays fans but after the game they did give us good luck for the seasona and so did there goal keeper who came over and told the stanley fans good luck which was a nice touch to an extraordinary game! i thought the midfield was disgraceful with roberts and boco trying to do through ball`s but wasnt working for them unfortunatly. however craney was amazng in the first half with his tricks and the same with the second half really and welch playing a great part in the match. but unfortuantly i think that grays brought there confidence from there win last week and out played stanley in the midfied but fair play to grays they gave it there all and stanley wasnt there today! and the pitch was awfull! :angry8:

Re: Todays game

My biggest concern of today was the obvious discomfort of Robert Elliott, just recovering from a back injury (that he played through) and now seeing his left (kicking) leg so heavily strapped up. And yet he still managed to pull off some great saves, but there were times due to his injury that his sharpness was just quite not there and the immense pain he was in was blatantly obvious and he made all the right gestures but coley wasn't for subbing him at all!!!!!!!!! I hope it's nothing serious or long term he's got a fantastic career ahead of him and has been a major catalyst in the second half of this seasons wins

Outback Ozzy 01-04-2006 22:28

Re: Todays game

What a shower of sh*te. We were playing like a bunch of losers, only credit must go to Andy Todd (hope we buy him in the summer), Robby Elliott for keeping us in the game through the adversity of injury (why wasn't he subbed?) Paul Mullin and David Brown, For me, Craney, Roberts and Boco were all guilty of trying to be too clever by taking the ball passed people when a pass to another red shirt would have been the easier option. Don't get me wrong, all three have played excellently at times this season, but today they all had stinkers apart from the goals they scored (Boco apart). Grays played exceptionally well, but like York were complaining last week about fouls they didn't get, I think some of our players were bitching about fouls we didn't get today. The other thing I didn't like was the defenders stopped when they thought they had been fouled instead of playing to the whistle. Just out of interest sake, how many points can Grays get, I think they can also get 86, so 2 more wins for Stanley must be an absolute minimum, and no folding as we have in previous years.

Outback Ozzy 01-04-2006 22:43

Correction to the above post, Grays can only get 83 points, but Stanley CANNOT afford any more slip ups.

We can indeed still get 83 points. At present there are still 4 teams that can mathematically win the title, and for your information the lowest you can now finish is 4th!

I would hate to see you slip up and let Hereford or Halifax in so if you going to do so we had better make sure of the 83 points:Banane47:

Re: Todays game

Greys played some excellent football above anything else they had the drive and the passion to push home every opportunity laid open to them and there was little shortage of opportunity thanks to our poor defending, a fair and justified victory for the Greys and long may they continue to play some good quality football.

Robbie Elliott was obviously distracted by his condition, but showed his quality in doing his utmost to stop shot after shot (get this lad signed up, Todd an all)….Those that got through where down to pure crappy defending by the rest of the lads, they where no where near enough to be effective, time an time again they failed to give Robbie Elliott the support he needed at the crucial moments. This was more disappointing for me in view of his obvious discomfort.

Greys played to the ball at every opportunity, when we had possession and posed a threat they had two or three men closing us down, when they threatened us there was little to distract them let alone close them. We could learn some good lesions about passion and drive by watching this game back a few times and seeing how little we did not only to secure the win, but also to pull it back.

Before people get upset, Accrington Stanley is probably the best team the Conference as seen in the last few years and without the slightest doubt deserves to be 13 points ahead and with a little more passion will be secure for promotion by Scarborough, but today they played some bloody good football at times but where nowhere near good enough to win…..Five games left. Go out and win every one of them.

I'm not familiar with your personal experience today, neither do I doubt your word.

Nevertheless, I'd like to say what a fantastic job the stewards did today. They were under strength and under pressure as far as I could see. They worked and worked . . . and worked.

Thanks guys and gals for a magnificent performance !

robbie elliot was excellent and coley (even though he is the manager) shouldn't really publically blame one individual at this stage of the season. crikey he stood by crighton for long enough (long enough to cost us the playoffs) and elliot is in a different league. i think the wholesale defensive subs told a tale , not that it made any difference. craney's goal was class though, pity it wasn't a winner!!!

Re: Todays game

A defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.

Sadly after witnessing Stanley losing at Bournemouth in the 3 round of the FA cup some fifty years ago it was to be my lot to see what used to be my home team lose at home on my return to the fold.
<O:p
What did they put in the Stanley’s half time drinks? Valium?
<O:p
When they came out for the second half and got going half the team’s body language shouted, “I don’t really want to be here.”
<O:p
However we could have been three or even four goals down by half time but for some stalwart goalkeeping and a few last ditch tackles that could so easily, on another day, have given away a penalty. Such staunch rearguard action got what it deserved in the second half with Stanley’s second goal that was worthy of being included as part of the Goal Of The Month on Match of the Day. Strange that it was not featured! Ah! Well! Maybe in a few years time?
<O:p
All I can say is that it’s a good job that Alan Hanson wasn’t around to witness a defence that had more holes in it than a sieve.
<O:p
Still this was only a minor hiccup and if the players do not dwell on it we can clinch promotion by the next home game. Fortunately whatever Gods there are were on our side and only granted Hereford a draw.
<O:p
FGR and Woking are too far away for me to travel but come Easter Monday I hope to witness Accrington Stanley (the world famous Accrington Stanley) return the to Football League proper.
<O:p
And now a couple of questions.
The shop doesn’t sell flags so where can I get a white ensign flag with Accrington Stanley printed on it? My bedroom window would be an ideal place to display it to notify the Darreners that Accy is back. Any reasonable size will do although 69” x 50” (175cms) x (127cms) would be perfect.
<O:p
I also saw someone (I don’t think that it were a steward) with a coat/anorak with the Accrington Stanley motif. Where can I get one?
<O:p
Finally just a word of appreciation to the Webmaster of the official Accrington Stanley web site – exceptional.

Re: Todays game

I saw the Greys in their first game of the season at Burton (little spying mission) & tipped them for a great season then. All credit for yesterday as they closed Garry Roberts down & had a class front line who worried our defence to the end result. Mclean had to be their MOM & well said the fan who shouted to him at the end come & play for us next season. It was returned with a big beaming smile. Spoke to one of their lads after & he said the team & fans all appreciated the warm applause for the Stanley fans at the end. Sorry Lowey but although Morecambe would be closer to travel to, I am still sticking with my prediction that Greys will be on our visitor/visiting list next season. Not too much collateral damage though & lets hope Morecambe do their job on Tues night & bring the celebrations a step closer.
