I'm delighted that Accrington Stanley has players on its books who are from both Benin and the Ivory Coast. This gives us the opportunity to consider how we might contribute to these countries by strengthening our sporting links.

Sport speaks to them far more effectively than any politician - I heard on the radio today that some African nations (possibly started with Senegal ?) will be going on strike if they are not allowed time off work to watch the World Cup.

Sport gives Africa hope, and we can forge new relationships with such countries through our football clubs in the UK.

Must be good in the long run, I'd say.

I'm sure I suggested about 12 months ago that we should use our links with foreign players to generate a new support base. We had Lutel who had St Kitts, Rommy and Benin and Julien with L'Cote de Ivoire.

A collection of old Stanley Kit, a raffle to find the person to deliver it and voila: a massive publicity campaign of Stanley travelling to the poorer regions of these foreign countries and aiding the development of football. It would also generate huge interest for the player who suggested their home region.

Its not as mad as it sounds.

Brilliant Macca, and I'm sorry that I either didn't see it or I can't remember it (. . . you'll get to my age) .

So let's keep it to the fore then, and many congrats for your original idea.

It is my understanding that both julien and rommy are french born but have african parents or grand parents thus playing for the ivory coast and benin respectively. The same way gary roberts would qualify for wales!!!!

Re: Benin fLag

They could all probably qualify for Ireland :)
