Improving the bar

The bar has obviously gone down hill this season with respect to takings. The OSC think this is one area where we can really help the club and maybe raise a bit of funds along the way. I would like to see a monthly night organised by our new social club committee (yet to be officially formed) to fill the bar for at least one night a month. Saturday night can usually be discounted and maybe friday because of functions that are booked. But would you go out on a thursday night? Thursday in town has become a good night out recently but there would be nothing to stop you going to our event and then on into town.

What night do you think would be best to maximise attendance?

What or who would you like to see?

It will happen.

Re: Improving the bar

Think the problem on thursday night is "student night" so may not be everybodys ideal plan and with people working on a friday, whats wrong with booking with the club for a friday or saturday?? doesnt have to be a birthday party does it, if we can get a decent amount of people then why not

Re: Improving the bar

I know it might be boring but quiz nights get people out. If you make it a regular thing you can make a bunch of money - have a raffle as well.

booking a weekend is not a problem as such, but, the point of the nights would be to increase the bar takings. Any event needs to be publicised and it would be better if it was the same night every time. If we booked a friday or saturday we could potentially be taking away a birthday/christening/wedding. I wouldn't think that 'student night' would affect us too much as most of our fan base (who would attend such events) are slightly older. But it would be good if we held our own event targetting students.

Northern Do's attract hundreds. King st was sell out earlier this year so it might not be so bad. Good thought if it stops our above friends coming.

Re: Improving the bar

Ultras nights were not necessarily the success that you make it out to be. Same people having to go every time, spend all day away from the family on the one day of the week that you get at home, spend £30 each and the whole day/night raises about £100 for Ultras funds, then people question where it goes etc. Therefore it is not done as often now. But no doubt it will. I am looking for events that put 200 people in a room for the night, spending over 2k on the bar and raising a few hundred quid for OSC funds.

Re: Improving the bar

At a footy club I was with,we used to have 'gambling' nights.Crown and Anchor was there but the main attraction was 'horse racing';A large board(say abit bigger than a ping pong table) was marked out as 6 lanes (like an athletics track) and 'jockeys' would move their model nags in response to the throw of the oversized dice. Horses for each race were named after people within the club -e.g." # 4 THE CHAIRMAN- by MACCA out OF WEDLOCK" and the club wag would commentate.Use 'funny money' and punters can redeem it at the end ,or have auctions. These were very popular and the club made several $$$ from the 'tote'.

Re: Improving the bar

now we're getting somewhere!! keep em coming, all ideas can be used (and most will be) but the original ones will be looked into a bit more.

One thought is that the club holds about 200, £5 a do gives us £1000 to find an entertainer. If we got somebody for about £700 we should get a top quality act and £300 quid for the OSC, as well as a full bar. Jim Davidson? Bernard Manning, strippers (male and female - separate nights) etc.

Curry night?

Help me out folks, look at other supporters club sites and see what they up to, I've looked at a few and everybody seems to be active.

shakermaker 02-11-2006 16:48

Re: Improving the bar

Just developing on my idea, how about a battle of the bands type night?

Obviously less Americanised, but it would be cheaper than finding just one entertainer as you get a few bands to play then give the winner a cash prize.

Could be a monthly thing & something very profitable.

AccyJay 02-11-2006 16:54

Re: Improving the bar

What you've also got to take into account is the location.

i.e.

Crown Pub - Quiz on a Monday Night, Artist on Fri & Sat nights.

Hare & Hounds - Quiz on Thursday night, DJ on Friday. Artist alternate Saturdays.

Grey Horse - Quiz on Wednesday night.

Oaklea (from 15 Dec 06) - Quiz Tuesday night, DJ / Artist Friday & Saturday nights, alternate weeks (DJ / Artist after Xmas).

If you book the club bar, then why not make sure that it is for the night after a match. That way it can be announced before, during & after the home games (especially on the day of the function as a reminder).

Race nights always go down well, 50% of the bet takings going to the OSC & 50% to cover the cost.

If you want to get students to come along, then why not look at student bands. These are relatively cheap, because they are usually glad to have a venue to play in. Also they usually have a good following of family & friends.

Re: Sportsman's Dinner

Think you will find the Club has an official one organised for early December.

Why there has been no official announcement, not quite sure!

If the OSC are to organise a Sportsman's dinner they obviously need to avoid using the same people/ clients that will be attending the club one.

You can only "fleece" people so many times.

Normally a good time for a sportsman's dinner, is early March when people have recovered from overspending at Christmas.

Comedy Nights

I've had a look around a few other sites as well.

Curry nights seem popular and can definitely be done, need to find an Indian with plenty of seating that a) can accomodate us and b) will do something on price for us in return for some advertising

Legends night. Currently doing interviews with a few for the fanzine so the contacts are there. There is going to be an Ultras v Legends match at the end of the season, details will follow when the rest of that event falls into place.

Comedy nights. Been looking into that this week and have fired off a few emithers asking for costings etc.

Accy Jay

I like the idea of race nights and there is some good stuff on those links, reasonably cheap as well. Something will happen with these.

C'mon Stanley

Some good ideas in there, Christmas Works do's would be a good idea except that we haven't got catering facilities so any food would have to be shipped in and that would take the margin out of it. But theme nights in general are a good idea to be backed up by artistes of tha ilk performing. The club have already begun using the Gazelle lounge for corporate events (see fishy site for motivational speaker). Using the clubhouse for Slimmers clubs etc is also a good idea but those type of ideas can only be utilised by the club (keep em coming though cos they do read these message boards and so would pick up on ideas viable and profitable).

Band nights will start happening and will remain for as long as they are profitable. The CelticCross gig was excellent and made a good few bob over the bar even if the place wasn't heaving. But, they did that for free and other bands won't, therefore unless people support these events then they will die away along with many other good ideas that weren't backed in the past (Red and White Fortnight, The March)

A social club committee will be formed at the next OSC meeting on monday at 7pm. Anybody who thinks they have something to offer and would like to get involved should come along and make themselves known to me before the meet. There is no set number on how many people can form the committee but I would like to think at least one will step forward. The committee will be responsible for organising and booking the various events that we will put on at least once a month. I would prefer it if there was a good few people so that you can share the workload and split into a couple of groups and do alternate months, rather than tow or three doing every month.

Every event needs to raise money for the OSC, through either pay on the door or raffles/footy cards/auctions throughout the night. So, for every event that we put on we need people to donate stuff. Can you, through work or yourself, donate goods? Bottles of wine, boxes of chocolate, meal for two voucher fer t'chippie etc?

Keep all the ideas coming please. Either stick it on this thread every time so that people do keep looking and thinking, or just PM it to me. I have a good amount of feedback of various people over the last three or four weeks and all ideas are noted for looking into at the right time.

Can we raise ten grand this year? And fifteen next?

Yes and we`re gonna do it for free AGAIN on 28th of December.
Smack bang in between xmas and new year 2 days after Battering Bury 2 days before Mangling mansfield.
FREE ON THE DOOR. Plenty of notice this time so lets get plenty down. We`ll be putting up some merchandise for the raffle again and I think Spud`s got a promo signed by the team to auction off. Any unwanted xmas present will also be welcome for the raffle (dangerous pets not included).
I`ve been talking to a few other bands I know and some would do it for free or very cheap if they think there`s plenty of people getting in that might become followers or want a CD or a T-shirt.

So start getting the word out the first band night of the ASFCOSC kicks off at christmas, lets fill the place and give this movement some momentum, cos FREE bands means FREE on door but it`s up to you to give them the incentive.
If the OSC wants to start hiring bands it`s gonna cost around £80 for a solo (and risk getting a karaoke joe/queen) £150 - £200 for a tinpot duo like us and anywhere from £300 up for larger bands. Local bands can probably be got for much cheaper even free, if they`re young with lots of friends they could be a bonus or just another band that no-ones heard of.
I could trawl my Punk Rock legends but would Eric be that keen on having UK Subs on.
Hold on. Am I the ONLY Stanley fan in a band ?
I`m sure there must be others out there in the crowd who do music.
Lets root em out and round em up.

I must say that since Rob took charge there seems to be an incridible buzz of creativity rippling through this forum, ideas springing up from all directions and a lot of them good. Lets hope some can be brought to fruition and some of our dreams come true. (some people even had time to break off from their argument to chip in, marvellous).
