Re: Donny Match
What a horrible 3 hour journey. Left work in Blackburn early at 4.30 and took an age to get onto the M66. Heard on travel radio of delays due to 1 lane only on the M62 so opted for Woodhead Pass route but took 25 minutes to do the mile from M67 to Mottram traffic lights. OK over the Woodhead but interminable, unfamiliar A- roads round Barnsley and over to the A1M. Finally made it onto the M18 at about 7.00 and eventually picked up lovely "Football stadium" signs taking me to (you've guessed it) -the brand new, unlit and deserted showpiece stadium in the middle of nowhere! Two other drivers were also doing 3-point turns and one shouted "Follow me, I've got sat-nav!" My little Fiesta was burning rubber keeping up with his M-type BMW roadster and made it with 15 mins to spare. God bless you sir, whoever you are, as I would certainly have missed the kick off without you. Disoriented by this, after the match I took the wrong road home to my daughter's house in Sheffield and spent a sleepless night after she gave me un-decaffinated coffee, my brain zinging. Up at 6.00 am and another horrid drive back via the M1 and M62 and got into work at 8.44 for an 8.45 start.
Oh, yes...the match! I thought we did OK and played with a lot of spirit and no little skill. We could well have had a couple of goals with our purple 10 minute patch in the second half when the 10 men battered their goal, but but no such luck. The ref annoyed me by manhandling Whalley and making an absolute drama of brandishing and waving the red card for about a full minute - sickening!
Well done the Ultras for non-stop, full repertoir of songs and chants. Overall a memorable football experience with a disapproving wife stuck at home on her own. Was it all worth it? You bet it was.
