No, Jimbo, the idea is to "engage him with humour", not "to be nice". (I just got carried away typing with a bottle of wine.) But time and time again the traditional abuse is ill thought out and misdirected, most committed supporters of any team get it wrong more than the liner, to abuse him from the offset shows he's not getting a chance.

No, I do not think humouring a linesman will make him decide in our favour, but vitriolic and vehement abuse, which is mainly undeserved, does influence him against us.

I used the word cajole, "to persuade with flattery or gentle urging especially in the face of reluctance". That's the route I' take, maybe, as a scouser I look to use humour in all things, it works for me.

Thought John Timmins post was great, "shout what you want on the Clayton End, he can't hear you."

One liner, after checking the nets at half time, came back onto Whinney Hill side and said, "they're not very friendly over there, are they?".
Made me laugh :) .
