After reading Macca's statement about his home town team, how many of you more passionate supporters are actually from Accrington ?
|
Re: Home Town Team ?

Re: Home Town Team ?
Lived in Accy for fifteen years, and now call the assistant referee, "Liner" without even thinking about it. Originally from another part of Lancashire, well it was when I was a lad - Liverpool.
Must admit I get a buzz from all the scousers that've played under Coley, with one notable and recent exception. :p |
Re: Home Town Team ?
Born in Accy, raised in Ossy, now engaged in permanent missionary work on the wrong side of the Pennines!

I was born in Ormskirk but until I was 25 lived on the former Stanley family estates at Lathom about 3 miles to the east. So I have always been a Stanleyite in more ways than one.

Re: Home Town Team ?
I was born in the heart of Church, moving to Fern Gore aged 7 and then leaving for Blackpool at the age of 13. My grandfather was a life long Stanley Supporter until the hurt of 62; he died in 1969 after a long illness never really knowing of Stanley’s return. I have always been a Stanley Supporter the only ever flirtation with another club was when my school mates decided that Stanley wasn’t a real team so I very briefly offered support to Rovers or the Dingle Men, I don’t remember which because it last all of a week, if I couldn’t support Stanley, then it was to be none. I spent years, so many long years defending my Club and my Town from wankers and know now’t’s that thought it fun to take the ****. I came back to the fold and family which is Stanley in 2005/6 season.
Dave, if I nag you to embrace Stanley it to cushion the fall of Burnley as it tumbles into the lower leagues. It might take a year or two but at least with Stanley as a second club you can look forward to watching football in the Championship again. One more thing Dave, if you are proud of your Home Town and your Home Town Team, you know exactly where we are coming from. On Stanley On |
Re: Home Town Team ?
I am not from Accy, nor indeed any part of the UK. I am born and bred down here in NZ.I must've heard something about Stanley when a kid in the 60s as I have always had this'feeling' for them.but until around 5 years ago had no idea a team had been resurrected. The internet a few years ago made it possible for me to find out more about your progress and I was rapt for you when you won the Conference last season. Then I found this forum and here I am.I am hooked.I love Stanley more than any other sports team or hobby I have tried.I only hope that one day I will get to the FES and be able to shout myself 'horse' on the Clayton end.My goal is within 5 years. I was very tempted to fly over for a weekend game and a midweeker a short while back, but I couldn't have taken Mrs Satin and that wouldn't have been fair.:)

Re: Home Town Team ?
I was born and bred in Blackburn, but in the 1960s played for a team in the Accrington & District League. We even reached the final of a cup competition one year - and I played on the hallowed ground of Peel Park. I used to watch Stanley occasionally, but became hooked after their epic FA Cup performance at Deepdale (although they did lose the replay at Peel Park).

Re: Home Town Team ?
Born & bred in Accy (well Clayton to be precise but couldn't really support Clayton Park Rangers could I?) and my great grandad was one of the founder members of the club so Stanley is well & truly in my blood - not sure what happened to my sister though, poor thing fell by the wayside somewhere along the line & supports the dingles - ah well every family has a black sheep :)

Re: Home Town Team ?
I'm a Foreigner!!!
Live in Suffolk, have family in Harwood, Huncoat and Ossy. Lived in Accy for a while moved to Rossendale, worked at Rawtenstall before movin back down south..Ipswich Town primary team but keeping red flag flying here too. Get to Stanley games when in area. Tractorboy Red :) |
Re: Home Town Team ?
I was born in Accy Vic Hospital, and I've never lived anywhere else but Accy. Lots of my friends will tell you that I used to live in the hospital coz I was in there so often!!!
I was first brought to stanley when I was 7 and will next season celebrate 20years of following the mighty reds. I was given plenty of opportunity to wander from the chosen path when I was growing up, I'll even admit to owning Liverpool, Man Utd and Norwich shirts. But my dad did it right, he told me to follow players in the top divisions, not teams, I owned those shirts based purely on the fact that my favourite league player played for that club. I was always encouraged to choose stanley as my team. I remember my grandad telling me I was born here so it was in my blood!!!!(He was born in norwich, but somehow it was in his blood too!!!) That stuck with me and I'm still here. I'll never be anything but a red. |

On the 28th of this month it will be 40 years since my first game at the Turf. We got beat 2-0 ( no chnage there then lol ) and played Notts Forest who were second in Division 1 ( some things do change). So according to my reckoning I was -19 when I went to my first match :D |
Re: Home Town Team ?
at six years old I read the newspaper sports pages (Accy Observer) for the first time. I read that a funny named team called Stanley were playing Watford in the North West Counties League. I pestered my dad to take me and three hours later I was cheering the reds on for the first time. Away at Winsford! 24 years later I only get the scores wrong.

Re: Home Town Team ?
Born & bred in Blackburn. Watched my first Rovers game 22 years ago, when Blackburn ran out winners 3-0. I was hooked from that moment onwards. I moved to Accy about 7 years ago, & lived next to Peel Park. I've had a soft spot for Stanley ever since.
Real football. Real players. Real fans. :D |
Re: Home Town Team ?
If you lived next to Peel Park, would that be Turkey St? If so you might know my Uncle and Aunt. Theyve since moved from Turkey St but they bought a house there when it was built I think and lived there for several years.
I was also born in Accy (says it on my passport too Wynonie), lived on Primrose St, top of Ormerod St, but was never taken to watch Stanley (Accy apathy?!) then moved to Leyland when I was 7 because Dad got a promotion in the Fire Brigade. Always heard or found out what Stanley were doing from year to year but it was the FA Cup run in 1992 when I was 17 that drew me to watch my first Stanley game. Admittedly before that I was calling myself a Man U fan and was taken on several occaisons to Old Trafford as a young teenager. Also went to watch Blackburn a couple of times but I never called myself a Rovers fan. I was a Man U fan watching a game of football coz I couldnt go to Old Trafford. But since that cup game against Crewe at Ewood, Ive been nothing but Stanley - caught the train over to Accy for a home game soon after and that was me. Great club great people. Miss it a HELL of a lot. Jimbo T :horn8:blower |
Re: Home Town Team ?

Re: Home Town Team ?
Well now then, where to start?
I was born and bred in East Kilbride, about 10 miles outside of Glasgow, so I too am a Scot (and proud of it!). I vaguely remember my Dad telling me about a football team that went out of the league the same year I was born, but up an untill I met Sarah I honestly believed that 'Accrington Stanley' was a made up name for that damned milk advert.........Imagine my complete surprise, after meeting my now wife, to find out that not only did Accrington actually exist, but that Stanley was a real team!! I went to my first ever Stanley game just 6 short years ago, and now I wouldnt/couldnt support anyone else. I consider myself a true convert!! |
Re: Home Town Team ?
Just a further point about my feelings towards Stanley, in the light of current events.
I first watched Stanley with my dad in 1960 as they slipped towards oblivion. I watched them in the mid-60's in the Lancs Combination with about 60 others as Peel Park crumbled before our eyes. I watched them in the 70's when the Crown was just a muddy field with a rickety fence around it. I watched them when they slipped into Unibond One playing at places like Flixton and Trafford. Whatever, the future now holds for this club, good or bad, I will go on watching them, because I am, quite literally, "Stanley Til I Die" and I cannot change...and I hope that everyone who has contributed to this thread feels the same way too! |
Re: Home Town Team ?
Not Me Born And Bred In Buxton Work In Stockport So A Nice Forty Five Min Drive To Accy And A Boring 1 And A Half Hour Drive Back To Snowy Hills Of Buxton
|
Re: Home Town Team ?
I was born and bred in Preston, moved to Accrington 17 years ago and now class it as my 'hometown'... I love it here... went to my first Stanley match in 2002 and have been hooked ever since...One of the things that kept me coming back were the friendly fans/staff at the club. My 10year old son is Stanley mad,He doesn't support any other team...
:D |
Re: Home Town Team ?
Despite being born in Blackburn QPH, I`ve lived in Accy all my life and since 1976 been stood behind the nets in all kinds of weather watching the rise from Lancashire Combination to the Football League with a mixture of hometown pride and the feeling of belonging to an elite club ( Which we are of course!)
|
Re: Home Town Team ?
I was born in Skipton but have lived all my life in Barnoldswick, started watching Stanley about 3 years ago and have hardly missed a home game since, been to quite a few away ones but not as many as i would like.
Stanley are the only team i support, my mates think i`m daft but they do come down and watch now and again, and have really enjoyed it when they have, but they havn`t been to any recent ones, obviously. |
Re: Home Town Team ?
All my life (50+ years) I have lived in a quant little place that nestles between Blackburn & Bolton - DARWEN, where all your dreams come true!!!
As a Rovers supporter up to 1975, I then fell out with football for a few years. In 2002 an ex Stanley player dragged me kicking and screaming to the Crown Ground, and was instantly converted. My mother-in-law lives in Osy. She attends every home match, and has been a supporter for the last 50 years. |
Re: Home Town Team ?
Born and bred in Accy ( Roughlee 1946 ), went to Peel Park Infants then Juniors and lived on Burnley Road ( bottom of Peel Park Ave ), and went to my first Stanley game in 1958, trained with the Stanley juniors as goal keeper till the demise in '62 when we were told not to turn up for training anymore. Moved up to Bash and played for Baxenden United in the Accy Combination during the '60's. Work has moved me around, but now settled and working in the Lakes, but stioll manage to get to matches.

Re: Home Town Team ?
Live 9 miles from Accy but was dragged along 3 seasons ago and have followed the fortunes since.
Give us a gree to Church Path :D |
Re: Home Town Team ?
First game I ever saw was Man C, my home team, vs Newcastle U, FA cup final, 1955, on telly. Lost our full back, Jimmy Meadows, early into game, with a broken leg, no subs then, we lost, 3-1.
Following season, we were back, & beat Birmingham, 3-1, the famous game when Bert Trautmann, Man C keeper, broke his neck. From then on, I was City supporter....... even when most of my mates had turned to United, post Munich....I remember being at school, when, over the tannoy, we heard the dreadful news...... however, I came to work in Accrington in about 1965, & have been here ever since! But, it's only been since our Unibond promotion that I have been a Stanley supporter, all thanks to my son-in-law, (he married my daughter in 2000)... he brought me to a game, & forgive me, I can't remember which one, or indeed, the result...... but, since then, I've been hooked, a season ticket holder for last 4/5 seasons.... And I intend to be for as long as possible..... Whichever league we are in!!! Gerard |

Re: Home Town Team ?
I was born in Bury but now live in Shropshire. My younger daughter saw the milk advert in 1990 and I foolishly offered to take her to an away match when they played somewhere locally. We then saw a big win at Newtown and have been hooked ever since. She celebrated her 13th birthday with a home draw against Droylsden. Nowadays I often pick up my brother in Bury on the way.
I still get up to the FES as often as I can and fit in as many away matches as possible. My daughter also fits in as many matches as possible when she's not playing rugby or selected for British World Cup bobsleigh team. |

Re: Home Town Team ?
Sorry chaps,
It's nice to be all nostalgic and tell everyone about the good ol' days when your dad used to take you to Stanley but in my case, that 'd be bullpoo 'cause my dad hated football. But that's ok - he used to take me all over the north watching F1 stock car racing instead. 20 Chevy 454 powered metal chariots tearing round a shale mudbath - definately as exciting as Mullin heading a winner in the last seconds of injury time!!! I wasn't born in Accy either, Queens Park Hospital in Blackburn I'm afraid. I do call Accy my home town though as I've lived here since 1976 and went to Hollins. I've only been watching Stanley since their last season in the unibond but what counts is that I'm hooked now. Stanley 'till I die!!! :D |
Re: Home Town Team ?
Well I have to confess that I have no blood ties at all to Lancashire (apart from marrying my wife who was born in Bury, and living for 10 years in Manchester).
I was born in London (Hammersmith - nearest team QPR) but at primary school, we all had to follow a football team. I didn't know many teams then - most of my mates liked Man Utd or Spurs (the usual cr*p), but I selected Aston Villa, because I liked the name !!! :D I was never a Villa supporter of course, and have never seen them play - but my dad used to take me to matches at Fulham and Chelsea in the early 1960's - and my first ever match was at Craven Cottage in 1963 when West Brom beat Fulham 2-1. What a different atmosphere then to today's Premiership rubbish ! In those days, all the fans mixed, wore rosettes and waved rattles, and there was never any trouble at matches.:) I do remember reading and hearing about Stanley at the time of their demise and thinking how sad it was - but from about 1970, I lost interest in football (when I was living in Shropshire) and the interest did not return till last season (after making moves to Manchester, Norfolk - 7 years there - and finally to Berkshire). I started supporting Stanley last season, thinking how brilliant it would be if they got back into the League, and was so excited when I came to the Crown ground for the first time - and also saw the old Peel Park after the match. That day at Woking last year is one I will never ever forget !!! :D :D :D Since then, I have been hooked and take a lot of stick at work as well as on other clubs forums. I work in London and it is not easy to get to home games, but have seen Stanley this season at Alsager (charity match), Chester, Watford, Torquay, Bristol Rovers, Wycombe Wanderers, Barnet and Swindon Town. We sponsor Andy Tretton's home kit (looks as if it will be unworn this season too ! ;) ) and have joined the OSC, and I'm looking forward to the games at Walsall and MK Dons, where I hope to see Stanley pull off a couple of wins ! :D I do have a soft spot for Walsall and Torquay, and also go to games at Forest Green Rovers (very friendly club - like Stanley in many ways), but Stanley will always be my number one team, whatever league we play in and wherever we are living. GO STANLEY GO !!!! :not_ripe: :Banane35: :not_ripe: |
Re: Home Town Team ?
I was born in Burnley (sorry) but moved to Accy when I was about 6. Didn't watch football until I turned 36 (I'm now 40). Since then I have become addicted to the home matches and have passed on my addiction to my daughter (season ticket holder) ad my son.
We'll all be absolutely gutted IF we go down and elated if we stay up. Come on the reds!! |
