So who's the REAL derby game then?

With the arrival of Morecambe,(congratulations),I am curious as to which club we meet next season(league) will be considered the main derby match? Please enlighten me.:)

The closest is Rochdale (not counting the Burnley friendly), but Morecambe would be a good boxing day fixture.:banane58:

Depends which way you go but if go by motorway then you pass Bury's ground to get to Rochdale

Re: So who's the REAL derby game then?

I think Morecambe is the real derby, as there is a history between us. In terms of distance theen it must be Bury, I would think. But there isn't a history between us and Bury.... yet.

Re: So who's the REAL derby game then?

It will great with all the games 50miles or less for us...

Bury
Rochdale
Stockport
Macclesfield
Bradford
Morecambe
Chester
Wrexham

I think Bury is the derby match.....

And that makes it a derby game because..........?

Nice question KJ, we took a lot to Bury and Rochdale, we're definitely Morecambe's main derby match, and both still proper Lancashire.
It's Bury and Morecambe for me, there's more banter with these two. :)

Plus we have a "Roses" battle this year with Bradford :rose8:

Not forgetting Rotherham, of course :o

[Bad year for Yorkshire, wasn't it? :) ............With the exception of Farsley Celtic]

Re: So who's the REAL derby game then?

Is this even a serious question? Morecambes the Derby Match. I don't even consider Bury, Rochdale, Stockport or Macclesfield derbies. They're just close clubs which will obviously mean a lot of fans showing up. But none of 'em came even close to the atmosphere of a Morecambe game. Dale and Bury we pretty good, but still, not even close.

Got to agree with Diesel, due to the history between us & Morecambe I realy hope this is our Boxing Day/New Years Day fixture.

Re: So who's the REAL derby game then?

When I posed the question,I guess I was referring to abit of 'history' as such as opposed to the club 'next door'.. So if I was to time a trip over to Accy, should I be aiming at the Morecambe game for some real 'passion' both on and off the field?

Without a doubt Kiwi - that would be the one to try & go to (although now we've just nicked one of Ince's best players there could be some fun & games there)

Depends on your definition of history - we may not have played Bury and Rochdale between 1962 and 2006 but I guess they were pretty regular opponents for fifty years before that (OK I haven't checked the exact details). How far back does our Morecambe "history" go ? I think I remember playing them in the Lancs Comb in 62-65, but when did the '68 club first scramble far enough up the pyramid to meet them again ?

Genuine question, not trying to be clever

Re: So who's the REAL derby game then?

a season in the NPL early 90's (poss 93) and then the three Conference years. Other than that just the odd Lancs Cup match, BUT ..... they were probably the benchmark that we aspired to for years. They WERE the Pride of Lancashire for years until we usurped them.

The early 90's away fixture was notable for getting battered 5-0 yet we carried the keeper, John Armfield off the pitch on our shoulders as it was his last game and he had been a rock for us that year.

If I can quote from the ConfGuide History of Stanley, you can't count the games before 1968, as this 'Stanley is a different club and has never been in the League before'. :D

How many millimeters is Bury closer than Rochdale? We travelled over 'Owd Betts and was there in the time you could say 'Boston you are going down for a long time. I hope Morecambe take your place'

My Ian Craney, scored a cracker at Morecambe Bay!

Anyway KiwiJohn it used to be Bamber Bridge when I started watching them, but life was simpler in those days.

I remember going to that FA Cup game in 71/72 - went on the normal day trip to Morecambe Frasers bus - my Dad asked the driver to stop outside the ground to let us off

Re: So who's the REAL derby game then?

chorley, rossendale and barrow have been the enemy of the years i honestly cant remeber seeing bamber bridge though. Now its bury and rochdale for me and the arrival of morecambe is rekindled conference rivalry.

If you reverse the nearest club thing, ie who is the nearest league club to Morecambe, then it has to be Stanley. No question of it.

But that doesn't make it our top derby; there's a few good "local" games next season. ;)

But let's get it right, our derby games are Burnley and Blackburn, we're nearly there, and they'll hate it, they'll really hate it.
