Reflections on the Leicester game
Thought we were very unlucky not to get something out of tonight's game.
We started poorly, but still had two good chances in the first half, but failed to take advantage of them. Second half it was all Stanley. Hit the post twice and Boco brought an excellent save from the 'keeper with a shot from distance. We may have lost tonight, but I feel massively encouraged by the performance. We played some really good football in the second half and if we can keep that up for the rest of the season, we'll be alright. |
Leicester Post Match Reaction
I think the better team lost!
Hard to fault Stanley full of attack, looked solid at the back It was hard to tell who was the team from the higher division!:) Lots & Lots of Positives! When heads would have gone down last season now heads are held high there is a new found belief that run's through the team and it shows!!:) Well done to the Ultras for keeping the wall of noise up I can't wait for the cladding to go on and I can join in with the singing! Well done Stanley & the supporters!:) |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
I'll second that, how that keeper got to Boco's shot I'll never know, sure that was going in
|
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Gawd just come back, with lack of voice lol, shame we didnt win cos we had some good near chances that just wouldnt go to the back of the net fully - like boco's, gee that was a was it in or out. Got to laugh at Leicesters fans chants tho i think despite the not so full clayton end we out sung em LOL!!:D

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Home support was pretty poor wasn't it? Especially for the first home game of the season. If there were roughly 1000 from Leicester, then a gate of just over 2000 shows a lack of Accringtonians turning out.
I wonder, if the roof had been finished, would there have been more people on the game? |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
My brother and his family are Leicester fans and season ticket holders. we all went to the match tonight as they are staying with me. they all thought that Stanley played very well and were unlucky not to equalise, also that Stanley played as well as some championship teams. They would like to wish Stanley and all their fans all the best for the future and hope to play you again one day in the PREMIERSHIP!!!!!
p.s. Thanks Kipax for taking their photographs, please could you post them on the website for me to view. |

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
The second half was Stanley showing its metal, if the lads play like that at league level we’re in for a corker of a season, very unlucky tonight. Nice to see some familiar faces and nice to be back at the FES.
No shame on the pitch tonight, but the lack of town support was disappointing and we where badly let down from someone at the back of the Clayton End making racist comments. |

[quote=Tin Monkey;460259I wonder, if the roof had been finished, would there have been more people on the game?[/quote]
Doubtful if it would have made much difference - the weather seemed (wrongly!) to be clearing up a bit about 45 mins before kick off when the waverers would have been deciding whether to risk it or not. Pathetic turn-out from Accrington for such an attractive fixture and after such a good result on Saturday. It's sickening for Eric and Coley as the match was a great advert for football, played in a sporting manner with no quarter asked or given. Well done to all the fans for their great support on both sides. What a fantastic mid-field effort in particular from Stanley in the second half, but the whole team deserved something from a match which saw the Lecester defence rocking at times and having to resort to panic clearances. I thought Whalley made a big difference when he came on. |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Yeh i think they should of brought Whalley on a bit earlier he did lift the team game a bit:)
|
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
got to say apart from the first 10 mins that is the best i have seen us play in a long long time. it fills me with alot of the confidence for the season. i really like the way back 4 looks alot more solid. jay and procky give them loads of protection. miles seems to have a good understanding with cav already. definitely agree that whalley made a difference when he came on. the whole team looked really fit driving forward right till the end. only real down side for me was evil he didnt hold it up very well and missed 3 really good chances. i would start with the team that finished on saturday or even bring mcgivern on he was our top scorer pre season.

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Well just got home!! Left the match initially not knowing what to feel. Quite a few comments from Leicester fans saying we were unlucky and wishing us all the best in the league!!!!
After some much thought and analysing in the oaklea many of us decided we can only take positives from tonights match. Was glad to be back home at the FES with the stanley family...and even managed to make up some new sayings eh Mel??? :D Just watched Boco's shot on sky sports news and have to say what a save the keeper had to make on that one!!! Next one will be in Boco  Cart on lads cart on :) |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Hi All,
Was talking to Harwood Red , Macca, Zero and Spud tonight and they said I should post something instead of just reading things on here! Thought the lads did us proud tonight, did not deserve to lose the game and if they can play like that every week I don't think we should be worrying about staying up, more upset if we do not reach the play offs if not better! This is the best team I have seen up here but must admit dissapointed with the crowd, although the Clayton End did their best. |

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
My opinion is that we will never see a higher league team so comprehensively battered for 40 minutes like Leicester were tonight. Their fans wished us luck on their way home but you you could see that they had a little bit of shame in their eyes that lickle old Stanley had managed to make them look so poor for as long as did. Lets not forget that this was no second string Foxes team. We really murdered them in the second half without really doing anything inside the six yard box.
My only gripe (other than a pathetic attendance) tonight was that I thought Coley could have gone for the juglular with the substitutions tonight. We ripped them apart with pace and movement and I would have thought that maybe Mullin (played his usual 100% game) should have come off to make way for another quick little ****** like McGivern to come on. A triple substitution with 15 minutes left would have took nothing away from the momentum given by the team and the crowd but would have given them 3 more problems to have to deal with. If we can reproduce that performance week in week out then this season holds no fears for us. Forza Stanley! |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Yeah you did Harwood Red! Thought why not.
Macca, would not have brought Mullin off, would have brought Procky off (he had a great game) and put Browny in the middle, with Harris who was exceptional. The way he was banging the shots in at half time made me feel he was up for it. |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
tsk, its no wonder you aint posted much with posts like that
I agree that Procky was magnificent tonight but it was around the box where we had no give and go. I have been on record often enough as saying that I think Mullin is fantastic, but, occasionally subing him takes away a little of the predictability of our play and gives the defence something more to think about. I'd have shoved all the subs on and then got thrown out of the competition for fielding 15 players!!! |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Yeah but no but yeah,
If we were missing out around the box Browny would have made a difference. My opinion anyway. Mullin works all game and that t055er who keeps slagging him off all game, who stands in front of me (who did it all last season) needs to learn abit more about football. |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
tripled your posts tonight Gaz!!!!!!!!!

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
As I was stewarding in the away end, gotta say, they all thought their team was sh1te and were lucky to be still in the comp. They agreed they got battered by the better team in the second half, just a shame we came up against a goalie who was their best player by a country mile and the reluctance to shoot when in the box. Do think Stanley players would make life a little easier by playing the simple one-twos instead of trying to out football a footballing side and if in range and sight of the goal, shoot the ball instead of trying for a better position coz we lost the ball on more occasions than I care to remember. My biggest worry about last night though, is the number of scouts from other teams watching the match!!! As much as I know players want to better themselves (and who can blame them) we want them to stop at Stanley (Rommy, MIles, Roberts etc). Please can we leave McEvilly on the bench or out of the team and use McGivern instead though. Stupid booking last night, he has not changed a bit since last time and he is the sole reason our bookings and red cards will rocket this season.
|
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
LOL Ozzy echoed about Evil i would of preferred Mcgivern on but hey ho thats Coley, he's given him the chance i suppose. I thinkk in some parts that owd 'hesitation bit' got in the way when it comes to shooting the target.

I dont know what the hold up with the roof is? but doesnt look like it will be completed in a hurry so be no covering up for saturday so hope the weather is better, but i do beleive the 'getting wet' issue does make a small difference to a few people who thought better of it last night:D Its quite fun getting wet or big dripped on:D |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
The issue with the roof is perplexing to say the least.
According to last night's programme, Eric Whalley said it would be completed when there was a 'window in the fixture list'. Surely the last 3 weeks was a perfect window? Double glazed as well. ;) He also took another pop at this messageboard and the inaccuracy of the rumours that have been posted here. Perhaps if the club was more forthcoming with news we wouldn't have to speculate and depend on rumours for our information. |

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
we had ours with us, but didn't put it up coz it would have blocked peoples veiw. had we been stood in our normal place it would have been up.

Agree about the roof - surely the addition of cladding should be a minor job compared with all the work done up to date? Why can't we ever get a straight story???? |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Have tried to avoid posting as this is a fans forum and thus reflects their opinion which they are quite rightly entitled to. However can't believe the criticism of our booking last night. Having spoken to both the assessor and the referee it was agreed that a mistake had been made as Lee made no contact at all with their player. It is bad enough officials pre judging players without our own fans doing the same. We have made a concerted effort to improve our discipline this season and are moving in the right direction. Cavs booking on Saturday was also harsh as he got the ball. No I am not being biased and there will be times when we are quite rightly punished and times when we are lucky and escape lightly but these two cards were unjust.
Keep the faith |

Agreed, McEvilly looked out of his depth last night, let down by a very poor first touch on the ball. The report on Leicester's website said he missed a free header to equalise, but that's unfair - he was under extreme pressure from one of their defenders and nearly made it. Our fitness levels looked awesome last night - well done to the trainers! |

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
I'm new to this forum but have to agree with redraines comments about the crowd. I went along with my kid brothers and really talked the match up. The game itself was great, Stanley put in a top performance which bodes well for the season, and we all agreed that Leicester's keeper kept them in it. But I'd reckon there were at least 1100 Leicester fans which means less than 1000 for Stanley. Roof or no roof that's just not good enough - we were playing the biggest club that's ever been to the FES and if people won't turn out for that what will they turn out for?! At least the fans who did brave the weather got behind the team. The atmosphere was great.

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game

I too thought the team looked very fit last night and energy levels were still high even at the end. The only player who looked out of sorts was McEvilly, who still looked a few weeks short of his best. A fit McEvilly is exactly what we need up front in this league. If he's working on it, then I'll give him time to get there. I really hope he does it. |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
and as far as the attendence goes if Stanley were still rooted in the Unibond or even the Conference a home draw in a cup competion against Leicester City would have seen the ground packed no matter what the weather.
Perhaps even those who dont go and watch Stanley regularly but would shell out for the "big" games are getting a little too blaise' about the teams that are on show down the Frazer Eagle these days. |

Last season Forest were just over 2000, while Boston were nearly 2000 a few weeks later. I really think it's bad to dwell on it, it'll pick up and has shown a sustained growth over the last 6-7 years, it's not as though League football is new to this part of Lancashire. It's a bit dispiriting to dwell on attendances when the team are probably going to have a very good season judged by last night's performance. Coley has built three promotion winning sides, this could well be the fourth. Sorry for going on a bit, looking forward to Saturday. :balloon: |

i also think the lack of stanley supporters was down to holidays but dont forget most people back from holidays will be skint and not had there next pay and had to choose which game to got to because there is 2 home games so close together saturdays game will be a better reflection on the home support .and i think we should lay off evil because he will get better with each game.all round i think we have a stronger squad and will be nearer the play-offs than last season things are looking bright:Banane19::Banane19::Banane19::Banane19::Ban ane19::Banane19::Banane19:

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
I thought Evil was Ok. He got stuck in but needs a few games to settle back into the team. I think we should give him a chance - in spite of everything that's been said about him in the past he's a strong tough player and that's what we need in this league. Overall we're looking much stronger and fitter than we were last season.
In terms of gates, I've found that early season crowds generally are low as people sit back for a while to see how the team will do. Perhaps the real time to start grumbling is if we're still not pulling the crowds a few months on when we're up near the top.:Banane06: |
Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
look at every other game bar Macclesfield v Leeds (massive team and took a massive following). Every other gate was well down on their average, even the smaller teams with bigger draws. Gates mean nowt at this stage of the season and first round of the cup. The time to worry would be in the third round of the FA Cup if we had such a miserable attendance.

Re: Reflections on the Leicester game
Apologies for the late posting in this thread, but I had to go straight up to Scotland after the Leicester match and I have only just returned.
I was gutted at the result - it was the first time I have seen Stanley lose at the FE. But I was impressed by the performance. I agree with much of what has been said already about fitness, team work and effort. Of course, since then there has been the Darlington match. This seems to have been huge disappointment after the positive performance against Leicester. |
