Our problem....
With all the criticism of Evil and us not scoring goals I thought I'd add my opinion on what I think is going wrong. In a nutshell its our midfield, in particular central midfielders.
Evil has come in for a lot of criticism recently and I agree he's not fit but without slagging Mullers off, he hasnt done anything yet this season. BUT In my opinion it isnt both of the strikers fault, they just aren't getting the service. We've always been a team who create lots of chances in games but this season we havent been making them. As I said before i think the problem is the midfield. Our central midfield is made up of two defensive minded players, with no flair or real attacking threat. That doesn't mean I'm slagging them off, it just means we haven't got that mould of a central midfielder who will provide the link to the strikers, just as Craney did, and score 10 goals a season and create. I think someone like that has to be brought in. The other problem with the midfield is the left hand side. I like Shaun Whalley but, as a sub. Boco isnt a left midfielder and our final ball especially from the left is poor. Both Mullers and Evil are having to drop too deep as we havent got that link from midfield to attack, in a way they are trying to do too much and its frustrating for them and for us to watch as they are just marked out of the game. Last season we scored in nearly every single game, we were the second highest scoring team in the league and we made lots and lots of chances. It just seems this season from the three games we aren't creating and making chances for the strikers which then leads to them, well Evil, being criticised. How much did Swansea want for Craney? |
Re: Our problem....
Absolutly right.
although the right of midfield - aka miles has offered th team no balance. most thngs happen with boco involved not miles. |
Re: Our problem....
and when that happens we start playing like amatuers evrybody gets sucked in down the right hand side and then it happens breakaway down the left handside nobody is there to cover either there is a last ditch tackle or the opposition score .its easy thats why the opposition pick up on these things darlington did it kick outs down the right handside switch wings and youll have clear run at goal:(
|
Re: Our problem....
I do think Miles is a good addition, his set pieces have impressed me and when he is on the ball he's effective, but as i said before there's no linking player....
|
Re: Our problem....
Sorry but I have to disagree with most of what has been written. The midfield was tremendous in the Leicester game, and I think Jay Harris has already won a man-of-the-match award. On the evidence of that game (the only one I have seen) and of various reports on all the matches, it appears that there has been a reluctance to shoot and chances have been missed.
I feel we have not got the tactics right at all yet. We are certainly not using John Miles as he was used so effectively at Macclesfield. I think the word "disorganised" cropped up more than once in the commentary on the Lincoln game. That is a worrying word. |
Re: Our problem....
Jay Harris is a excellent defensive midfielder, i'm a big fan of his but in my opinion him and Procter in the centre of the midfield will not work, neither of them will score you more than 2 or 3 a season and make a lot of goals.....

Re: Our problem....
Looked at another way, our problem is ...... no Andy Todd.

Re: Our problem....
Maybe your right. But I think in order to be successful in this league we definately need a midfielder who will attack and get at teams, score goals and make them....
|
Re: Our problem....
..... like Toddy did last season.
|
Re: Our problem....
So it's Todd out fat Wrexham reject in equals a lack of goals, I agree.
|
Re: Our problem....
I said last week that Todd is sorely missed. Every time we attacked, Todd was in the box, usually coming in at the back.
Too often this season we've been light in the penalty area and that means we aren't going to score. |

He has the potential to unlock defences and certainly knows where the goal is! |

I think we've got to sign a few players before Friday, Two experienced defenders and another attacking midfielder. I think Craney is out of the equation though,as I can't see us shelling out £100k for him when we were reluctant to part with £50k(ish) for Baker (Southport now Morecambe) I wonder what sort of financial sum(s) the club is prepared to outlay in securing possible new signings???:confused: I think it's more likely Coley is probably looking into loan options!:) |
Re: Our problem....
I do agree, we miss Todd a lot. In Milesy we have brought in a player of the same quality, maybe even better technically. But Toddy used to get at the defenders and take em on, or just run into them! We need to bring in a midfielder who will frighten defenders.....before the transfer window ends!

Re: Our problem....
im surprised coleman hasnt got into touch with his contacts at liverpool or everton.
everton want to find some where for Vidarsson (midfielder) who was on loan at bournemouth - problem being david moyes wants any loan players to play week in week out, otherwise he wont let them go. He is attacking. im sure they have a few youngsters who would enjoy a full season at league 2. |
Re: Our problem....
What's Rory doing these days ? ( steps back and awaits shower of abuse !!!;))
|
Re: Our problem....
:D The player that Rory was for us, the player that Gary Roberts, Craney and Toddy......we need another!!!
|
Re: Our problem....
The other solution we also have is Paul Carden once he is fit!:)
|
Re: Our problem....
Where has all the money gone that we got for players over the last two seasons. Not on the roof for sure. No money spent on players, We get them on the cheap or free from lower leagues or past sell by dates from higher leagues. We had been told years ago the money was in place for the roof and the problem was planning. No club sells the best two players to make ground improvements. So why is it not being used to buy players?

I think the players they have brought in with league experience such as Branch Carden & Miles won't have come for peanut money problem at any level of football these days is not the fee's but the salary's.

Re: Our problem....
From today's Telegraph
Quote:
We have had defensive frailties for ages, Coley has threatened to wield the axe before but never has done, we have a worse defence this season than last season when we conceded the most goals in the league. Why the hell have we not strengthened the defence? Isn't it time to get rid of players who are just not good enough. Put them on the transfer list and see if anybody wants them, I bet there won't be a rush from anywhere to sign them. Of course the midfield is defence minded, of course the strikers back track to help the defence, they have to because our defence is crap. It's time it was sorted, never mind signing multitudes of strikers, concentrate on not conceding goals. |
Re: Our problem....
I wouldn't say our defence is worse than last season, the new number 5, Roberts, has looked pretty good to me. In truth defence has always been Coleman's weakness, he's an attack minded player and whilst you can gt away with having poor defenders in non-league if you've got some good forwards this is no good in the league - you need bigger, tougher defenders. Godwin saved us at the back last season and in my opinion Todd saved us at the front. It worried me when he left and we haven't really found a replacement.

Did we get any new faces before the window closed on Monday or is the Observer not out yet.
|
Re: Our problem....
Has the window closed then? I didn't know that.
There is a different window for loan players. |
Re: Our problem....
Thought the window closed on Friday 31st?

Re: Our problem....
On the subject of improving our chances of avoiding another relegation scrap this season,I feel, having stated before in numerous posts, the Urgent need for the club to bring in two experienced defenders. If not to provide cover for what we have already got,but keep them on their toes.If we don't sort out what was our "achilles heel" last season this term, then the early signs indicate a long, hard season of struggle.
I also feel, like others, the gap that Todd has left needs plugging.Sooner rather than later.Todd scored 10+ last season not to mention the countless assists he provided. It's just my opinion, but maybe giving Boco or Whalley (or Brown for that matter)a free role operating behind a front two(and the jury is still out on what our best forward pairing may be) may be a way forward. Boco is certainly wasted as a winger. I,like many others, am concerned by the recent developments.A roof that is taking an eternity to complete, season tickets delayed and after the last two league games,a glimpse of what may lie ahead (i.e another struggle to keep our place in the league which we fought so hard to get back into.) We all need to be singing from the same hymn sheet. And by that I mean the club and the supporters. After all one is redundant without the other.I think it's time for both to stand up and be counted. I feel the club needs to be more open with the fans and by that I mean keeping the supporters informed with developments,be it the roof, season tickets, new players, budget etc. We as supporters, also have a massive part to play.Like the Chairman and the manager have appealed, bring a friend. And instead of slating individuals for their performances lets get behind them. If both(the club and supporters) keep pulling in opposite directions we will get NOWHERE !! FAST !! And if you're all looking for a moral to this, what might seem as a rant....Remember what happened in '62. |
Re: Our problem....
:banlama::banlama:Your problem is the awful bumpy pitch !!
Or at least it was last year. All supporters should get to the game on saturday and support you. It has taken so long to get back, do the locals still not want league football ? |
Re: Our problem....
George Santos big central defender currently on transfer list at Brighton. He is 6ft 4 and 14st he'll upset a few strikers and is built like a brick s*it house..!!!! He'll do a job and is an experienced championship defender.
Looking forward to meeting a few of you all this saturday as me and lad are up from Ipswich.. Tractorboy Red :):):) |

I for one will be giving Stanley all my support (after saturday) for this season.
Hopefully after a season or two, your support will grow to a level that will sustain league football. I would hate to see a club like this to return to non league after all the sweat and tears that has been shed. Never thought i would see the day that Stanley were a league club, and it will be to the eternal shame of those that are too apathetic to support you should you slip back to the blueconferencesquarething |

Anybody any ideas about possible investors? |

Eric said that he would retire and sell the Club if we got into the Football League, well this is our second season in the Football League and there are no signs of this happening. I am sure that if he put the Club up for sale there would be a few interested parties. |
Re: Our problem....
The selling of League club would have to be easier and more attractive than selling a non-league club.
However, I have no idea how attractive the club is to investors, to be honest. As a business it makes little sense, as there are very few customers. |

Well it looks as though we could be on the way to solving one problem with the signing of Sean Webb. Welcome to Accrington, Sean.

Re: Our problem....
Eric in the Observer:-
“We made it free against Torquay last year and people came. It was an exciting game with a last- minute winner and seven days later, against Hereford, we only get 1,800. It is absolutely ridiculous. It means the people of Hyndburn will only come if it’s free and we can’t live like that." What he is forgetting is that it was a bad weather day, if I remember correctly, and loads of the waverers were even leaving at half time, never mind missing the last-minute excitement. No wonder they didn't come back to actually pay to stand in the rain. I am as chuffed as anyone to finally get the roof but think it was a massive missed opportunity not to have it in place whilst the interest was still high and we were getting reasonable gates, even if it would have involved borrowing some cash. Now we have to build gates upwards from the bottom again. I personally know of 3 regulars who are just back from holiday and if only all our hardcore can say the same maybe we'll have a halfway decent turn out tomorrow? |
Re: Our problem....
the next big thing will be to have the 'bars' behind the both goal ends.
I'm not having a go but it was mentioned pre-season and we were told that they would be along the lines of the burger bars and would serve into plastic bottles and glasses (?) The roof will most definitely help to keep people coming after a first visit and the bars would help to win back a lot of the fans who have stopped coming. We've gotta get onto it because we are losing money hand over fist every week through stop-aways or missed revenue. I'm hoping that the recent articles are more of a moan in general than a definitve statement of affairs but providing we can see out the season in this league I reckon things will be a lot rosier in twelve months. Home crowds will average 2000 + away fans. |
Re: Our problem....
Things are once again moving in a positive direction
Setting up of the Centre of Excellence The football development Centre The long awaited roof over the Terrace The setting up of the Stanley Legends If we need a cash injection and can't find a willing taker what about a shares issue! I don't know what the rules govern towards shares issues but if the club were too release 2,000 shares at £50 a pop that would raise £100k straight away and give the fans even more chance to be involved! The gates are worrying!! no two way's about it:confused: |
Re: Our problem....
How much publicity has been given to the new roof? Living over 200 miles away, I do not see the local media. I hope that it has featured prominently in newspaper, radio and television reports.
