Eric on the radio

Sorry fellas but all I'm hearing on Radio Lancs at the moment from Eric is moaning about the people of Accrington not supporting the club.

I do wish he'd stop all this. It just doesn't work.

I agree with his comments about apathy in the town. He is not getting at the loyal supporters like yourselves. Look at the Torquay game, it p*ssed down the whole game, no roof but 4000+ came for free. What happened at the next game, over half didn't turn up. The facilities this season are better for home fans, I think he has every right to be very disappointed with attendances!:thumbsdow

I think we all are, but constantly banging on about the same thing does nothing but make people feel negative.
You are never going to shame people into coming. It doesn't work.

I think he's said his piece for the time being, we await the towns response by the clicking at the turnstiles!;)

Re: Eric on the radio

I've read all the various comments about poor attendances and no one has yet mentioned the other front page story in last week's Observer - that over 30% of the population of the borough is unemployed, one of the highest rates in the country. If you're short of readies you're not going to be coming to a football match, never mind splashing out on a season ticket. I'd buy a season ticket if I could spread the cost. As it is, I pay on the gate and probably end up contributing more money over the season than the season ticket holders.

Re: Eric on the radio

This is the best comment I've read on Eric's bleating, it applies this year, last year and, probably next year. (It's from the Morecambe messageboard)

I can't help thinking that comments from Stanley's manager and chairman over the last year have exacerbated the problem of low gates.
I don't really listen or look out for Accrington features in the media but when I have heard them they have often bleated about the support from the town. They've used words like "disgusting", "shameful", "embarrassing" and "annoying".
It's really poor Google Page Ranking. I imagine it makes the fans who go feel guilty for those who don't turn up, and it doesn't exactly paint an attractive picture of the atmosphere at the ground for those that don't go.

I think it's absolutely spot on.

not to mention the increases in mortgage interest rates that have wiped out four season tickets per household per year! people will turn up when its free not because they are money grabbing fairweathers but because its the only way that they could afford to show their support.....we are barely league standard how can we possibly justify charging one or two quid less than a premiership team three miles away???

Has the club not hit on this stat?? I know of at least one club(there may be more?) who offer a discount for the unemployed.Don't quote me but I think our neighbours up the road at Bury give a discount to those who produce their signing book at the turnstile- I think they get in for £5 ???:confused:

I'm out of work myself at the moment, this week has sorely stretched my budget, hence I went to the Posh game, missed the Oldham game, but will be there for the Grimsby game!! Simply couldn't afford to go to all three,as much as I would have loved to:o

This has to be one of the suggestions of the year!!! EW, Lew please take note. If ever you want to boost the gate, why not give this suggestion a try. The other thing that is not mentioned is the fact that Accrington and all its districts is heavily populated with ethnic minorities. We need to get some incentive going to get these people into the ground as well. Every extra helps. BTW, I happen to know that a PNE fan and a Wigan fan are coming on Saturday so that is at least 2 extra. If we can increase the fan base to about 1800 home fans who regularly come on then that would be a start, and surely when we play the likes of Morecambe/ Bury and Rochdale, the gates should be boosted and also with the likes of MK Dons, though I think the manager might not be so welcome after last year.

I thought that's what the diversity committee was for?

I've tried to email and phone the club on more than one occasiion to enquire about concessions but as usual have had no reply. Communication is non existent.

Mr Wynonie Harris is this where I make an appearence in this thread?

30% unemployment hmm could it have something to do with an influx of Eastern Europeans I ask myself?

Re: Eric on the radio

Once you start giving incentives beyond the normal adult. student, oap thing, ( ie minorities be they ethnic, unemployed, blonde etc ) the only thing you succed in doing is alienating the core support.

You can sympathise with those who are genuinely unemployed but lets face it these days there a lot of lazy workshy people about. I don't think the genuine paying supporter really wants to subsidise everyone.

We have had this debate many times down the road but all it does is become heated and nothing changes.

Surely, the time and place to debate that is elsewhere. The point is, there are a lot of ethnic minorities in the area and it would be a boost to our income if we could get some of them through the turnstiles. I'm doing my bit by bringing a few Peruvians every now and then! ;)
