great result and for me great credit must go to coleman, who manages the club with little cash, etc yet always seems to take the club forward every season,no mean feat with the funds available.;)

Re: today's match at daggers
Just in from the game, a very solid performance, more perspiration than inspiration, but a well-deserved three points. Coley went for a 5-3-2, with the midfield trio of Proctor, Brown and Harris positioned centrally. Though this appeared to leave us short of width on paper, we actually threatened the most from wide positions. The first goal was a gem, a swift one-touch movement with a pass out wide, a volleyed cross and a perfectly-placed, glanced header from McGivern, all executed too quickly for the home defence to react. The second goal was similar – another fast, direct cross from the right nutted home by an unmarked Proccy with the minimum of fuss. It was significant that our second came just after we had needlessly handed them an equaliser. Their right winger had put in a low cross that was on its way out beyond the back post, but Cav had committed himself and came steaming in, but didn’t have the room to direct his clearance over the bar and found the roof of the net instead. It was probably the first on-target effort on our goal, so that was a sickener, but it was a real boost for the lads to retake the lead so quickly, and definitely a downer for Dagenham.
<O:p</O:p The thing that wound me up the most all afternoon was our attitude in the second-half, for we simply sat back and invited their pressure. Now, as we have become used to, Roberts was tremendous throughout, winning virtually everything in the air, and Rocky had a good one too. But why sit back with such abandon? When we won the ball at the back, we simply hoofed it in the general direction of Mullers or Leighton, and it didn’t take long for them to win possession back and pressure us again. The saving grace was the fact that Dagenham were so one-dimensional in attack, lumping long ball after long ball into our box. An attack with a bit more variation would have posed us far more trouble, and we got away with it when they did find a clear opportunity. They brought Benson on and he immediately had a free header that he fluffed, and this was followed by another near headed miss. <O:p</O:p Our third was, frankly, against the run of play and was due entirely to the energy and variation that D’Sane brought to the attack when he came on. Finally we had someone who could hold the ball and then take on the defence with pace. The chance emerged after Roscoe ran at them and unleashed a swerving 20-yarder that hit the bar, leaving a perfectly-placed Mullin with a simple head-in from the rebound. Roscoe should then have had one himself when Cav curled a perfect far post cross onto his shiny bonce, but he headed over with the goal gaping. Something to work on in training there. <O:p</O:p But even 3-1 up you weren’t completely relaxed about the result. The second-half tactics of sitting back didn’t make for that convincing a performance, and this against a Dagenham team that will struggle to stay up on this showing, they completely lacked penetration, and I’d say that this was probably the worst Dagenham performance of the four I have now seen between us and them at their place. On the upside, the whole team showed tremendous commitment and determination. Rocky and Roberts were excellent, and both Harris and Proctor were effective and industrious. It definitely helped them to have Brown alongside as an outlet, and though Browny struggled a little to find the through ball and was caught in possession every now and again, he played an important role nonetheless. Cav and Leam were solid though seemed unsure at times as to whether to come forward or stay back. Roscoe’s cameo thankfully took us over the finishing line, for it would have been a farce had we let such a misfiring team back into a game that we had controlled during the first half. <O:p</O:p Phil |
Re: today's match at daggers
Thanks for a fine report, Phil. Do you know if Roscoe was on the bench because of not being fully fit or was Leighton preferred for tactical reasons? Did their goalie Roberts have his usual crack with the Stanley fans - a real character, that lad!

Re: today's match at daggers
I've just arrived home from Dagenham and found that Phil Whalley has said just about everything I was going to say. A great team performance in which Roberts was again outstanding. Well done, Stanley.

One other thing to say. I thought the referee and linesmen were excellent. Maybe one or two mistakes but no-one is perfect. They kept the game moving - and no yellow cards.

We won 3 games away from home in the 23 we played last season, we've already won 3 out of 6 this season already....

Re: today's match at daggers
As others have said, this sounds like a team performance. Well done to JC and all the staff and players. However, there is a worrying trend that we tend to sit back on leads after half time. It has been said a thousand times, attack is the best form of defence, so why stop attacking? Lets hope we can bring this sort of performance to the FES because fortress Accrington has been very leaky of late. See you all Friday.

[quote=Phil Whalley;481688] Leighton did okay and his header was a blinder, but it wasn't a game for the strikers to shine, quote]
I agree Phil with the above, what I liked about Leighton he was busy and made a nuisance of himself by getting a foot in and just jumping with the centre halves for a header when it was clear he wasn't gonna win it. All credit to him he worked his socks off. Proccy was mom for me and deserved that deft little curler to drop in but not to be this time...Just need to keep the run going on Fri night now. On my Stanley, On along that winding road to glory you’ve always deserved.
Good result today, proud as a dog with two sets of bollocks. I missed the second half because I was in the car and the “F” in BBC couldn’t maintain station. Bastards. Cottier, get them sorted. |

Re: today's match at daggers
Good work ethic today (much more interested than the Wrexham game)
3-5-2 works well away if the 2 wide men go forward as much as possible, sadly for nearly all the second half they where playing more as full backs. Positives all round from the team Harris was excellent IMO and was Roberts and Mullin. The first stanley goal was the best I have ever seen. Liam to Cav to Mullin - cracking play. Only negative is Branch who seemed to struggle with the pace all game, it often left him out of position and you could argue the first goal was as much his fault for drifting from his man (it was going slightly wide and cav put it in, but I wouldnt blame him to harshly for it). May I also add, Dunbavin played well and was comanding his area in the first half. It appears as if he is determined to take his chance. I would make the point, Stanley's win was largely down to Dagenham being poor; they could not handle crosses into the box or the pace of McGivern. Going forward, Dagenham where to obvious, it was the same idea every time. A few of their players had neat touches, step overs, trickes etc but failed to get a good final ball into the box. Stanley won but it was no Bradford performance. I would hope Coleman would analysis todays game and understand he needs to work on a better tactic than simply inviting pressure into his box. A better team will thrive on stanley sitting deep. Anyway, I picked up a sun tan - it cant be bad. Well done Leyton McGivern, you took your chance well. |
Re: today's match at daggers
Aside from the fantastic result - I'm really glad we went 90 mins without an appearance from McEvilly :D
Sounded like a superb performance in the first half, there's obviously room for improvement but I'm trememndously happy with it all. |

I think mcevilly deserves another chance, but he should never be partnered with Mullin - not enough variation.

He has ability, its getting him to apply it. Mullin is our prized asset, 3 games in a week was to much for him last time, so resting him or only playing him as a sub is neccessary. |
Re: today's match at daggers
My personal opinion- First choice srike force (playing 2 up front), Mullers and D'sane. Mullers with the height for the knock ons etc,Roscoe with the speed. Evil & McGivern reasonables option from the bench at the moment. Playing 3 up (i.e. 4-3-3) Mullin,McEvilly and Roscoe.:)
