I remember my old fella telling me about this. Think he was from Salford and he was shot by a jealous lady friend.

Walter Crook took over, first as coach, then as manager, but he too resigned in February 1953 after clashing with some of the directors in a season that ended with Stanley finishing last in the Third Division (North). The season ended with full-back Bill Robinson being murdered by a jealous husband. Chairman Pilkington stepped down after 22 years.

Apparently Bill Robinson was shot, along with a woman, by the husband of the woman, in Salford in 1953. (See Accrington Stanley: A Complete Record, 1894-1962, Mike Jackman & Garth Dykes)

There were also players who had unusual occurances during their careers, like James Donnelly, who in 1951 signed the forms to join Stanley while 100ft up The Huncoat Power Station and Ian Gibson who was given his League debut while still a 15 year old schoolboy. The most unusual without doubt happened to Billy Robinson in 1953, for along with a young lady, he was shot dead in Salford by the lady’s husband!

I'll have a word with the chaps who are researching Observer and Telegraph archives for the exhibition to see if they can dig up a newspaper report. Might take a few weeks before they get owt as they don't go in every week.

Will post the details when I get them.

"He was shot, along with a young woman, Mrs Marie Waddington, by the husband of the woman, 31-year-old John Waddington of Deane Street, Salford." - from Jackman & Dykes.
