Stanley does Sligo

A few of you may have heard me mention about planning a trip over to sligo, so thought I would post this to guage how much interest there might be...

I am organising a trip on behalf of the Official Supporters Club to Sligo to watch the Sligo V Cork match on the 2nd Aug. Prob going over on Friday 1st and returning on either the Sun or Mon 3/4th.

I am currently looking at options of travel and accomodation so don't have any prices as yet, and that may depend on numbers interested. I have been approached by Granada TV to take a film crew along to record our weekend away for the documentary!!!

So any ideas people let me know if you are interested

cheers dabeast will def keep everyone updated on what's going on, just hoping I can get a decent trip price...but it will also depend on numbers...

to fly or not to fly...that is the question :D

Or do we coach it over, I am going to see frazer eagle soon to see if they can help in anyway

due to the fixture V's cork being an 8pm ko, weird how all their matches are evening ko's, a sligo fan has suggested a supporters footy match in the afternoon, what da ya reckon??

Costs about 350 quid each way for a minibus over 8m long via holyhead - dublin on ferry. no idea how much a bus would cost to hire.

Flights direct to sligo currently about 100 per person but will increase each time someone books on. An alternative is to fly to Derry or Belfast International (domestic uk flights are 'generally' cheaper on taxes). Both airports about 2 hours drive from sligo.

The tricky thing with cheap flights is booking them at the right time and also you need the cash upfront for each passenger, making it difficult to give a price for anyone to go 'on a whim'. It might be worth speaking to Irish Ferries or Stena Line about the ferry options as they will probably be more flexible on numbers.

Hope you manage to arrange this I'm sure the lads out there will be surprised. From experience of organising something on this scale I wish you the best of luck it is a daunting task! If you need any help post on here or pm me.

That is my issue regarding flights as would need the money up front to do it!! Only prob with coach/ferry is the length of time it takes to travel and this may put many off... although the whole travelling can be also part of the charm if it is like a party atmosphere :D

I have had another request a la sligo and that is can we take the benin/boco flag...jase/sparkie???

May be cheaper to go across as foot passengers and get a coach from Sligo to do any running about over there. That way you aren't paying for the driver's time away from home and the coach being booked out for all 3/4 days

i see what you are saying Dave, but I want it to be the whole package and people not having to sort some travel arrangements themselves

Just found better flights for you at bmibaby. Flying to West of Ireland(Knock) (40miles south of sligo) cost 55quid per person

Personally I prefer the idea of flying but think it will be impossible if many want to go to get them booked and paid for.

I have found a flight direct to sligo for £75 but still need travel to manchester airport, unless that was under people's own steam!

A (perhaps) long-winded option - Eurolines coach+ferry to sligo from manchester is 61.50 per person return (possibly with discounts for youths/seniors/children). The fares are refundable eg. if people need to pull out.

It does take a long time though and is overnight travel (could be a laugh!!), for example set off friday at 19.45 arrive sligo 12 noon saturday. one change of coach in dublin.

try using gulliver.ie or centralr.com to book/research hotels/b&b

Re: Stanley does Sligo

Just an update, along with the supporters club voting slips there will be a leaflet about the sligo trip attached with a bit more info, still trying to sort out accommodation but it is looking like the weekend will be around the £150 mark + match ticket.

My number is on the leaflet if you want to provisionally book a place/places or post/pm on here and then I will have more of a true amount of numbers wishing to go :)

Totally off topic here.
I just got a Flogging Molly CD and in the credits by Bridget Regan (fiddle/whistle player) she gives a special thanks to Charles Roberts-pipe maker in Sligo .

I'd say we in the Bit o'Red Supporters Trust will organise a supporters game before hand if ye are interested. Is their a group coming in July for Derry game? Ye wanted a game yeah?

harwood red 11-05-2008 22:11

Re: Stanley does Sligo

there is now a change of plan regarding this trip as the ultras have decided to do their own trip in June... so due to reduced numbers I am going back to plan A which is flying... approx same price but with smaller numbers I would be able to collect the flight money from all of you before booking it...

The price of the flight is showing around £80-£90 at mo and looking to pay about £20 - £30 per night pp for the hotel so it still comes to approx £150

I need definate yes's in this thread and pm's with tel no's as I want to collect £100 pp asap so I can get flight booked and send hotel a deposit.

closing date for interest is going to be 2 weeks - noon sunday 25th May

so come on get yer name down, we're gonna have a blinder of a weekend :)

No problem. I'm in the Supporters Trust and myself and a few others organised a recent supporters match against Galway. It took place on the astro pitch at the Showgrounds. We can organise this again no problem. I'll PM you my E-mail address if you have any queries. Won't be on this site much probably so easier to keep you updated by E-mail.

Re: Stanley does Sligo

harwood red, Alan will be in contact with you tomorrow or ASAP

Willie Miller, what time would ye be looking for this game to kick off around? The game is at 8pm, the pitch is located at the Showgrounds and there's a pub across the road from the ground...so ye won't have far to travel :D. Fans will probably have use of the away team dressing room after too so ye can have showers and get changed there. I'd say would around 2 or 3 pm suit? Plenty of time for drinks and that after, before the Rovers match.

hi sligoman, sorry meant to post a while ago about this, unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control, we are unlikely to bring a group over in August, it's more likely to be just a few of us who are coming over by plane direct into sligo, but that is only if the fares drop again!!

Just waiting to be approved. Does anyone know if the Ultras are still coming over this coming week? A pitch is booked to play them in a supporters match but saying as Willie never got back to me we're going to try and play Derry fans instead.
