Dunno, maybe they work like dogs all week to get fans to the ground, invest their own cash, get us promoted to the football league after 44 years in the pub leagues & then when they've done ALL that, they log on to the officialish forum & see "die hards" calling for them to get sacked.............

The thing im missing is ........because of this april fool foolery.....is what exactly is it going to gain publicity wise other than we're run by planks slagging off accy & throwing dodo's out of the pram by going lancashire...........sorry not a great piece of publicity & certainly not well thought out, is it going to make people come or attract new support........other than the new fake LSU idea.

Me now & as others nevermind new visitors to the fishy site wont know what to beleive when a story comes up, a bad joke usually backfires. The fans here despite the objection to the tone behind the joke is what people are angling at - especially as its not the 1st time Eric has slagged off the town publically not that people are peeing on the fun bonfire:rolleyes:

For a while now its been the stanley fans that have brought new support to the FES mainly.

Yes, that's fair enough. It isn't my usual position, but really think this taken things over the line and will lose the club a lot of goodwill.

Me and Bagpuss are usually poles apart (no pun intended), but they've pushed us together by shooting themselves in the foot again.
I was calming down but saw tonight's Telegraph, and I presume the Observer will be full of it tomorrow.

They've set the agenda, and taken us back to the demoralising discussions of last year, and for what?

Most of what I have heard and read in the Press today just seem re-workings of yesterdays original statements and interviews (play on words perhaps:confused:)

There is no doubt it has brought the Club a lot of publicity, the right kind well that's open to debate, hence the number of postings on here and the Telegraph website, what it has done and I don't think anybody could argue against this it has "united" (no pun intended) the fans probably in a way I certainly have not seen before on here as one behind the name "Accrington Stanley" so maybe some good will come out of it after all:)

at some point various aspects of the media have contacted the club to 'check' the credentials of the rumour ...... the club at this juncture should have slapped themselves on the back and had a chuckle that they had conned a few people ... and issued a retraction stating that we have had x number of phone calls including those from Sky, Lancs Telegraph and the White House ...result all fans ROFLMAO and LOL and PMSL etc ....friday night comes and the mood is nice and fresh on the back of talks of season ticket reductions, new stands, Family Excellence awards, blooming Football in the Community programme etc etc in addition to all laughing at Sky News for being numpties

club adds fuel to the fire by saying that yes it was a joke but now they were considering the idea ... cue lots of free publicity (not a bad little idea - maybe attract a good few season ticket holders from the town?) which then turns into bad publicity with slanging matches between those who think its a good idea and those that think its a bad idea, LET forum between Stanley fans protecting the club and Rovers fans slating 'rip off' Stanley, between Eric Whalley and an undeserving Accrington public.

possible new fans attracted to the website and cheap season tickets being appalled at the idea of being 'undeserving'
existing fans being made to feel stupid and ridiculed in pubs and workplaces across the borough and considering not renewing their season tickets because they either believe the rumour or are disgusted by the chronology of events. It would have been far easier to print up 10,000 A5 doble sided full colour leaflets and distribut around town at a cost of £150 + vat


.... this came close to being a major triumph IMHO but once again we snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Maybe we spend our hard earned cash to go and support the club week in week out, when it is far cheaper to go to either Blackburn or Burnley to watch better standard football. Then we get home to see theyre making a mockery of the fans that do go to watch them. If it wasn;t for us die hards Accrington Stanley wouldn't even be able to consider changing their name because theyd be out of business.

I've just come back from the FES. Isn't Eric a bit old to be up a ladder with some stencils and a marker pen. Good news for those against the name, he was struggling to fit it on the signs, so it might get shortened to Lancy Stanley Utd ;)

Saw it for what it was - not another chance to have a cheap dig at the club just because I couldnt get a joke.... The club do it every year. I too saw the flying penguins on BBC1 - there was also a joke news item on the local evening (yes thats evening) news where they were training pigeons to fly in formation to replace the planes in the Eastbourne Airborne show by showing them arrows and directions written down on a piece of paper hahahahaha :D It was beyond me how they kept a straight face...

Howlin' Wolf....'Goin' down slow!!!', then I re-read the piece in the 'Telegraph'' Oggy !, which ends 'Without doubt it was a bit of fun and an April Fool. But the more we think about it, the more it makes sense '...then I sat at my Piano and played some more Blues !.

Because if there is one thing to ponder upon when surveying the collective
reaction to the 'fishy spoof', it is surely the fact that none of it makes any sense whatsoever !!, and anyone who can arrive at any other conclusion
must be THE April Fool!!

The whole affair, in the opinion of one who has supported 'ACCRINGTON STANLEY' since watching George Stewart glide his headed gems between
the Peel Park goalposts, has done little to enhance the reputation of those

Oh what a way to stuff up all the brilliant publicity surrounding the club recently!
I'm not a Stanley fan but do follow their results being from accrington and posted on here regarding the new season ticket prices etc.. hailing the club for it's good work then they go and do this!
As a joke it was ok but to carry it on the way they have is ridiculous and makes the club look very amateurish but to all the fans considering not going because of this,don't be so silly!
It may be a joke for now but if attendences drop further don't you think it might become more of a reality?

Nobody is saying that they wouldnt go to Accy stanley matches what they did say if the consideration for name change became a reality then they would get on the bus to Accrington Stanley not LSU.

I made a decision a few weeks ago that if I couldn't post anything positive then I wouldn't post. Whatever Eric and co. where thinking has to me now fallen flat and once again made us a laughing stock, I wonder what our new director is making of this and I hope it's not stopping him getting a few more southern money men investing in the club.

The last thing Stanley need is a clown like Batchelor taking over, he should be charged by the CPS for being a nuisance to football.

Interesting quote from Eric though, "I would not sell to anyone who wants to take the club out of Accrington or change it's name dramatically". Could have saved a lot of genuine passionate fans a lot of arguing on here if that had been put on the website instead of the stuff that has been published.

for those not in the know (no link available yet) the front page of the Observer tells of the attempted purchase of the club for 1.5M by John Batchelor (for a reason?).

This is the guy who tried to buy Mansfield and change the name to Harchester United (fictional team from Sky Ones Dream Team)

He had suggested taking the club to Leigh where a 10 000 seater stadium is being built and calling the club Lancashire United.


The much maligned name change story was prompted by this and Rob Heys admitted this was his idea. He goes on to say that changing the name is not something the club would do lightly but it is something that they would now definitely think about if it widened the appeal of the club. Eric Whalley weighs in with ..."I said I didnt want to go down the line of appealing for support as we have done it all too often. That is why we now have to consider all options. Peter Cavanagh in his column also says that ",... but it is only a name and if a name change brings about more revenue then so be it."

So the joke rumbles on and the rose-tinted, club can do no wrong fans will continue belly laughing into their tea at the fact that Accy Web continues to be deceived by an April Fools joke on the 3rd of April. Publicity stunt my arse.

Macca & Lindsay - spot on its really peed me off too really taking the preverbial now, front page of dross other than the fact a numpty aint gonna buy it but least we know where the joke originated now.

Many asfc fans on here support the club as best they can, speaking from the OSC point of view have been tirelessly trying to promote the club to the people, even successfully getting a grant to do just that!! We had 3 schools to the club last week enjoying their tour getting to know the club historically & present day aiming to tackle the much needed youth support - a real positive response from the schools whom came, there is the Exhibition happening this year - ALL ABOUT ACCRINGTON STANLEY this summer hopefully getting the towns interest & good press. Also the interest of overseas support & connections, the crowd performances & flags by the Ultras getting great attention again promoting the club. The many fans that came out on a freezing saturday morning to shift snow off the pitch so the match could go ahead, the many that painted the stands or volunteered their time to help the club & offered again in the summer.

So what do the club do in its appreciation & promotion of itself ............................ fluff it all up big time - for what ?? Free publicity ?? what about the season ticket offers - what about the schools that visited - what about ASFC integrating with the town - even Hartford coming didnt get the shine - what about the ground improvements coming - what about our objective for next season?? oh no thats jokenly gone to LSU - a made up prank thats what got the coverage!! The club have not handled it properly nor professionally, now is losing trust within it coop of fans nevermind the floating/new fans simply undermining & insulting the ones they have & the town they live in. The press have covered the fact that the desicion could 'effect' from next season - oh what a good one for getting season tickets sold - with even the thought of the prospect or even suggestion - joke or not its still not the point !! Still no reassurance or resonable response from club - shameful.

Yes you're right , forget buying a season ticket now.... that explains it all!

Only my personal opinion but the "business" of football is actually taking away the magic of the game IMHO. I care not of takeovers, board meetings, shareholders, steward wages, chairmans opinions, press coverage, ticket prices, vouchers, corporate hospitality. Its like we have 1200 extra members of the board who like to squabble over matters that merely 10 years ago no-one would have cared about nor questioned.

I care about tradition, passion, history & pride; all in abundance at ASFC. I am proud to say I saw & continue to see the rise & rise of Accrington Stanley my home town club.

There is loads wrong with the running of Accy if we are honest but there are folk who have invested money & lots & lots of time who will get that right. The hierarchy only have ASFC at heart, if they hadn't they would have jumped ship by now & we'd be back in non league.

In terms of this thread & much of the content of the forum lately, I would suggest that the negative posters have driven many fans away as in reality, following ASFC ain't as bad as is portrayed on here........................

The only people that can increase gates are the players by winning games & Accy fans by making the experience on match day a wonderful one, one that potential fans feel they are missing out on.......
