12 Players To Leave!
Coleman has told 12 players that they can start looking for new clubs!
The following are: Graham Branch, David Brown, Martin Fearon, Jay Harris, Mark King, David Mannix, Lee McEvilly, Leighton McGivern, Mark Roberts, Sean Webb and Shaun Whalley. The one that stands out for me is one of my favourite players Jay Harris! I am absolutely gutted! I really am! Such a great player he was and always put in 110%. For the rest they knew it was coming and so did the fans! Very cross about Jay now , anoyed hes going and the fans voted him young player of the season aswell! See fishy site for more details! |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!

Jay Harris played in 79 games for Stanley and was booked 22 times and sent off 2 times and only scored two goals. |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
The club cant afford to play the players wages anyway.

am gutted about jay harris i thought he was a very good player always put in good effort1 am gald rocky is still here next season he will be in good form

Re: 12 Players To Leave!
it looks like kenny arthur will be staying for another season see below from accrington observer:
Kenny Arthur had a clause in his contract which triggered another year after he played 20 games while Ian Dunbavin and Players' Player of the Season Phil Edwards have been offered new deals. Stanley squad is slashed - Accrington Stanley FC - Football - Sport - Accrington Observer |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
I thought number 12 was andy todd being sent back - todd has been a dissapointment and his fitness has been poor.
No real suprises except Jay Harris, Mark King and Danny Mannix. Harris is a great squad player Mannix has failed to turn his potential into reality and has a bad attitude, resulting in poor application. King has some ability and a rare left foot. He will get a run of games for a conference team and will end up in league 1 - all he needs is experience to develop. The problem with the relases - it makes coleman who onece again i think is the best man for the job, look like a fool. Playing an unfit Evil costing us games (against Lincoln away in August he was dreadful and meant Mullin was isolated), playing Whalley who had all the effort but none of the ability, Playing Branch who had no stamina when the season kicked off nevermind now, Playing Sean Webb with all the best will in the world and his international caps was never good enough OK - he will argue they here all free transfers so nothing ventured nothing gained etc. However, they have all cost us points - thats right, I can think back to numerous times each of the aboves inability has cost us points and goals. He has stuck with these players who have all proven to be not good enough. I am presuming (and hoping) the reason john miles hasnt been released is down to the club giving him a 2 year deal, thus they dont want to pay him out for a year? I hope this is true. BTW - rumoured phil edwards will reject our contract offer and sign for chester on a 3 year deal. |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
more secure on a 3 year deal and he will get more money which he desevers hes been top at the back this season
|
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Well done John for starting the major surgery that is needed. I don't think there are many surprises in the list of the departed, good luck to them all, but if we are honest, not one of them ever stood out as someone who was going to push us onto the goal of fighting for the playoffs or beyond.
As for Edwards, I would hope the club pull out all the stops to keep him, 3 years and top earner would be fair reward from us for the ability and reliability he has shown. One of the few standouts of this season for me, aside from Kenny Arthur and Roscoe’s winner against Macc! Looking through the contracted players, who do we think they will try and move on? Miles is an obvious target (please take him Mr Ince, please, we’ll even pay the postage and packaging), Carden another, just by dint of hardly playing for us. I can’t help think that neither Robbie or Proccy have what it takes at this level. Proccy was integral to two 10th place finishes in the conference and absent when we won it and Robbie has one mistake a game in him and this hasn’t changed in all the years we’ve had him. Yes they both give 100% but as my old man says, 100% of naff all is still naff all. |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
i hope to god he knows what hes doing.
Carden and Miles, What the hell they have been nothing short of abysmal. and as for Robbie, well theres a surprise. can understand most of the others, apart from King, looks the best Left back in the league and doesnt get a chance what a joke |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Regardless on my feelings on any of the departing players I wish them all the best and hope they don't end up scoring/saving a goal in an opposing team next year
But I will say i am especially sad to see Jay and Leighton leave the club, I think jay is still developing and leighton wasn't given enough chances to prove himself. As for those staying...... you're red, you're white, please prove your dynamite :) |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Has anyone praising King seen him play for the reserves? I've seen him a few times (first team and reserves) and he never looked good enough.
The only surprise for me was Shaun Whalley. I thought he was another protege. |

btw - the edwards rumour comes from chester fan.
but considering he had never heard of phil edwards may indicate their is some truth in it. its not as if chester is any further to travel than accy from merseyside. |

good point. Edwards is 1 of the few players who can emerge with credit in my opinion. He looks so much better at center back |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
I just hope after , Mcgivern , Jay , Toddy and Whalley the main ones that have left , coley will be given some money to buy some good replacements!!! Just hope eric is not tight with his money if he doesnt want another season like this!

i thought McGivern, Jay and Whalley would all stay as thry were good prospects for the furture but good luck to them anyway
Mannix will play at a higher level so will king |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Quite shocked at mcgivern going my bud, is Liam staying then?
But coley did say he was going to do a major cull & look for new signings 5 or 6 hopefully:D |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Edwards offered new deal today but with a tiny pay increase..........He must be waiting to see if anyone comes in for him, if they do he will be off.
King will end up at Stockport. Spoke to friend of Mannix who said he already has choice from franchaise dons, walsall and Leeds interested if they stay league one. Well done! |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
thanks for the info J.B. (assuming some relative truth in there)
Stockport will win the league next year MK, Walsall and Leeds all in League 1 and with crowds money and prospects. Why is Mannix good enough for them but not for us? Is it just wage releasing to let him go? Seems to me that players like those two should have been given longer contracts and then invited teams to bid for them. Out of the players that are left i would be interested to see how many of them do stay on assuming that not all of them are actually signed to us yet. As with Edwards. |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
we should of signed them for longer so we could of sold them on made some money! i dont think its money it could be the way we play r the tactics
|
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
What about Paul Carden?
|
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Cannot believe that Jay has gone, my favourite player of the season and I voted for him for YPOS. He's a great squad player and has played well this season. OK he isn't the strongest on the pitch but he puts in 110%. To me its a mistake letting Jay go:(, for the other players, if you don't perform it just shows Coley isn't prepared to put up with it. Glad Rocky is still in the squad, hope he shines next season!!;)
|
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
i know jay was always putting in 110% he played well in games and desevered the young player of the year award! i think it is a mistake but o wel! yeh i think rocky will play better next season all the squad will
|
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
The main problem with Harris is that he can only pass backwards and sideways, whilst he is also too similar to Proccy. There's only room for one player like that in a team, as I've said in the past. When both of them play they look ok, but they should do when you've got 2 players doing the same job.
|
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
still think its a mistake letting jay go he did do some good runs towards goal, he played well in his time in the red shirt! but coley knows what hes doing

Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Maybe in time Jay will prove he can play to his potential, even though i did vote for him for Young Player of the year, mainly for his commitment, i dont think he will be missed from the team as a whole, but he`ll be back next season :D

Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Having read the " released list " I'll proffer my own thoughts on those to have been shown the door......
Branch.... I agree. Overpaid, sadly past his best and would save a decent sum of cash by releasing him.:) Brown.... I Disagree. My own personal opinion, but I still think he could have been a usefull squad player, particularly with what will seem to be a lack of firepower.:( Fearon....I Disagree. Promising young keeper. If We keep hold of Arthur, I think he would have been a more than capable understudy.:( Harris.... Again I Disagree. To me the lad had shown enough promise to retain him for at least another season. Along with Proctor, probably been one of the more " combative " midfielders we had since Barry.. Personally speaking, I think releasing Jay Harris is a mistake.:( King....Disagree.... Think he never really had a chance, maybe fell out with Coleman & Bell, but showed a little promise on what I saw of him.:( Mannix....Agree.. Haven't seen enough of him to draw any positive conclusion, understandably less so than Messrs Coleman & Bell. I'll go along with this decision.:o McEvilly...Agree.. After wanting to give the "Evil one" a chance to redeem himself, undoubtedly the lad has problems, particularly with regard to discipline. If the rumours surrounding Boco's exit amongst other rumours are to be believed, then we're probably better shut.:) McGivern....Disagree. I don't think Leighton has been given a fair crack of the whip. The lad is still young enough to learn, showed a little promise, my own opinion a mistake to let him go.:( Roberts... Possibly....I haven't been convinced by what I've seen of Mark. A little slow to react, undoubted arial ability, but the lack of speed does concern me. Webb....Another one I've doubts concerning the pro's and con's concerning releasing the lad. I don't think he's had a fair crack of the whip, he showed glimpses of promise, but unless we've got better replacements lined up already, I think it may have been a better option giving the lad a 6 month contract to run until maybe Christmas...Time will tell... Whalley....I Agree with this decision. No control, lack of positional sense, can't really finish. A bit of pace, but countered with control and finishing ability, not really up to League 2 standard at the moment. :o Todd....Gone back to Rotherham.....Maybe in a worse financial state than we are / may be. Over the latter half dozen or so games, there were signs that Toddy was coming back to form. IF there is a chance of securing Toddy's signature on a permanent basis, To me at least, this would be a positive move.:D This then brings me to members of the retained list. No arguement with the rest but the following exceptions : Dunbavin... A decent keeper, but maybe IF we can keep hold of Kenny Arthur, I'd sooner keep hold of Martin Fearon. As much as I admire what Bavs has done for the club, Personally I don't see Bavs as part of the long term future of the club.If push came to shove and Arthur was injured / unavailable, IF Fearon wasn't up to the task, then we could bring in a suitable loan replacement. Carden....The lad didn't impress me. Begs the question what sort / length of contract did he sign ??? To me... not good enough. If the club can command a fee, then all well and good. Certainly not good enough for League 2. Miles.....Simply put, the laziest player I have ever seen in a red shirt. Did we make a mistake in giving him a longer term contract??? If Mr Ince, (who I personally despise) can be persuaded to part with hard currency for Miles' services, then I'd applaud all efforts to get this lazy git off the payroll. If he has to come back to Stanley, I only hope he doesn't figure in the 1st Eleven, let alone on the bench. Every effort should be made that this guy doesn't wear the famous red of Stanley again. Whatever Ince saw in the guy, It would take one VERY persuasive, nay hypnotic individual, to convince me that MILES was good enough to play League 2 football. Coming to Contractual matters.... Phil Edwards & Kenny Arthur......Success can be built upon basing a team around a " SOLID SPINE ". Edwards and Arthur, Mullin and Craney (If played in the right position) would form the basis of a solid spine / backbone of a team upon which success could be built. Take two from that equation ( i.e. Arthur & Edwards ) and we're back to the drawing board. Every attempt MUST be made to keep Arthur & Edwards on-board. Additions........ Darren Kempson..... A MUST... We made the mistake of letting the lad go once, showed enough in the previous loan spell to prove his worth...Sign the man. Possibilities...... With the undoubted "merry go round" of released pros at this time of year, many seasoned pro's have been released. One Guy, A Big guy who may be a possibility, is Steve Fletcher from Chesterfield. A big lump of a forward who can still score a few goals, even at league two level. Conclusion.... Draw you're own, but according to the stats we're down to 16 pro's after this retained list was revealed. No doubt Coleman has his targets, but these are my own personal thoughts on the matter. Personally speaking,I think that Coleman is cutting the cloth a little too close, because I don't think that we're going to bring in replacements "en masse" so to speak. Admittedly, with our resources, my own opinion, but Whalley, Coleman & Bell will have REAL PROBLEMS strengthening what we had this season. Maybe Messrs Coleman, Bell and even our esteemed chairman have a few targets lined up.If we are to avoid another season of struggle this / these problems NEED ADDRESSING. If we can continue to survive in League 2 next season,on the paltry gates that we have endured this season gone; and any form of progress can be made, then I wish them all possible success. UP THE REDS !!! |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
would keep harris but well done coleman for shifting out some dead wood . still a lot of players to replace , maybe if harris was 6 inch taller he would have been retained .

Re: 12 Players To Leave!

And well done to you too DM !....You've at last, and rightfully, heaped a little bit of praise on the one person you've malighed so much in past threads!..........and if Jay Harris had been that six-inches taller wouldn't it have made him the 'giant' Defender for whom you have so often voiced a craving in your postings ?...... Have you anyone in mind to replace him though ???. Incidentally, I brought a half-dozen of the biggest sponges I could buy from Boots Chemists in Clitheroe.. all soaked with the best Brown Split ( Bitter fost!) that the Barmaid in the Whalley Arms could concoct...but try as I might at the Bury Game, I couldn't find any Stocks containing You and our mate from Darren anywhere !. With that let down...and the hangover from watching 22 players going through the Motions (?)...I went home and just played some Blues !. Was it just the empty promise that people had predicted then ?. Have a good Summer... and spend it( the LOLLY that is !) wisely. 'ON STANLEY......ON !!!!' |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Carpon - excellent post, the best on the thread yet! Although I am certain not everyone will agree with your analysis (as I don't as I would not have kept Jay Harris) it is a well thought and reasoned post. My worry is that of the 16 retained personnel, 2 are on loan with a possibility of moving to their loaned to clubs and 5 are youngsters who have little or no experience at this level! Got to agree 100% should have kept Martin Fearon and released Bavs. But is this not the scouse affinity coming back?
Of the remainder of the pro's I personally would have sold or released Rocky at the very least and now for the controversial bit - Cav and Paul Mullin as well. I am sorry folks but PM just seems too slow and would maybe be better back in the centre midfield or defence now. Cav is too injury prone - same for Rocky as well as his mistakes |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Only surprise is Shaun Whalley for me. Don't see the sense in releasing him unless he's being daft & wants more money.
Let's hope Edwards will stay. With Kenny Arthur, Andy Procter, Peter Cavanagh, Leam Richardson, Robbie Williams, Paul Mullin, Ian Craney, Jay Bell, Peter Murphy, Chris Turner, Bobby Grant and Andrew Smith... I think we've got some pretty decent foundations to build on. Roll on summer. |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
i agree with you i think shaun whalley should not of gone, he scored some good goals e.g wrexham, but no-one will know reason he went, as he played quite alot of this season games. we do have some good foundations to build on bobby grant great prospect for the furture as he has shown in last couple of matches he has played in. lets hope edwards stays aswell as he has been soild at the back this season
|
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Re. Shaun Whalley. It's interesting that most of his good performances have been away from home, which does not surprise me when I listen to some of the verbal abuse he gets from some of the home fans, especially in the cowshed, which is so close to the pitch. What people don't seem to realise is that he can hear a great deal of it, so it's no wonder he doesn't play at his best! If I were Shaun Whalley I wouldn't want to go near the FES again, let alone play for Stanley. Maybe, just maybe, this is one of the reasons for his departure and, if so, I hope the abusers are happy that the've got the result they wanted. It may be Stanley's loss in the long run.
|
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Good luck to the lads who are not staying with us, but maybe they'll get a fairer crack at the whip at other clubs. Was shocked at Jay Harris going & feel really sorry for Martin Fearon, I think we'd have been better keeping him & releasing Dunbavin to be honest.
Also feel sorry for Leighton, he was chuffed to bits to get the goal of the season award on Saturday night only to be told a couple of days later that he's not wanted anymore. |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
All the best to them lads going. Gotta say was shocked at one or two that I would rather have stayed. But meh, what's done is done...
Lets just see what happens next season and hope for the best. Come on Stanley! |

My opinion of Shaun Whalley ( for what it's worth!) would read like the Art Master's comments on one of my old School Reports......'Has some talent..but little application'!. It is this lack of application which, and I hope that I'm wrong, will bring him little success as a League Football player. Perhaps he'll mature into something different to what my assessment would suggest has in store for him...again I hope so. In spite of this rather negative posting, I really do wish him well !! . Gutted at the Harris decision, especially after him just winning young player of the season. All the others not a surprise although gutted for Fearo as its always bad to let a local player go.

Good look to you all Boys, I am sure we will meet again and also should be shown respect when we do meet. Though it was hard this year yet again, we did survive another year Thanks to them. |
Re: 12 Players To Leave!
Personally, I'm encouraged by the mass clear out. We've been in this league 2 seasons and it's obvious that we're not good enough.I think most Stanley fans would have anticipated the same kind of tinkering with the squad this summer that happened last year. But where would that get us ? ...probably another season like the one we've just endured, i.e. flirting with relegation. This is a bold move by Stanley, a statement of intent. OK some of us will question wether this player or that should have been retained but essentially the club, having realised that the players aren't good enough, are upping the ante.
I would now expect them to sign better players and I know people say we don't have the money but frees and loans will do IF we get better quality. To achieve this will mean paying higher wages to a smaller squad on a similar budget to this season (maybe slightly higher if season tickets sell ok). Operating with a smaller squad would mean addressing Stanley's poor disciplinary record to avoid unwanted suspensions , which is no bad thing. However, given Stanley's recent 'under siege' home mentality,it might be hard to change. But overall, I'm looking forward to the comings and goings this summer and with the core players retained, young players promoted and some quality additions, can we hope that we'll end up with a squad that can improve our position, not just statistically but also in style and entertainment value? Just to curb my optimism a little, I do recall the management saying that last summer's squad was good enough to battle for a play off spot and it soon became evident to most people that it fell far short of that. So I'm hoping they've learned by their mistakes and when they say they've made a 'quality' signing this summer , they mean it !! |
