Just a reminder of how things used to be

I was having a clear out in my loft and came across this photograph. I think it was taken by Cliff Hase, Altrincham's photographer, around 1990. The Holland's vans by the clubhouse would indicate it must have been the season they first sponsored us.

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/4695/groundo.th.jpg

The picture is quite big, so beware! :D

Re: Just a reminder of how things used to be

Wasn't this around the time of the 1st great FA Cup run.

The picture was on the front of the programme as well (I think)

The ground was superb by my standards, stands, wall, floodlights, clubhouse extension.

For those that remember the John Prescott era (RIP)( ps where's Stanleybabe today?? )The Crown in this photo is NPL (Unibond) standard

In the Shurm era there was a small clubhouse, two small stands, the moat was around the pitch and no wall!!
Step 7 of the non league pyramid and we were proud!!

Great photo. Taken around the time a two year old baby shaker went legging it on to the pitch after a family fun day up at the Crown Ground. :D

Cheers, TM.

Shame they can't do big fun days & bonfire nights up there like back in the day. Good times!

I'm sure it was before the FA cup run, I first started attending in 1991 and the main stand had the lattice work above. The main stand in the picture doesn't have the lattice work above.

Yep, you're right Mr T, was used on the cover of our programmes for at least a couple of seasons, including the great cup run of '92, culminating in the "David & Goliath" clash against Crewe. Strange to think that they're just another one of our league rivals now!

Are you sure about that, Redash? I could've sworn that the cantilever structure was added around 98/99...or is my memory playing tricks on me?

I'm pretty sure, the other stand was built in the late 90's. But I am knocking on a bit, and I could be wrong.

Yes im pretty sure they were! Im sure St Josephs FC of all ages used to play and train on there and also im pretty sure Blackburn Rovers used to train on there for a while too! If im wrong im sure someone will correct me! :)

Re: Just a reminder of how things used to be

If you look very closely at the top end of the stand, you can see the piles of waste from the digging of the foundations for the small stand extension, which was required for the NPL (we went up by default after Shepshed Charterhouse folded, if I remember correctly, or it may have been South Liverpool).

We dug those foundations by hand. None of this mechanical digger nonsense. ;)

I'd forgotten that we'd used that picture on the programme. I remember getting my copy from the club.

Definitely South Liverpool. However, following their demise, Worksop were due to go up by default, but their ground didn't meet regulations, so we went up in their place.

I was actually there when Holands pies launched their sponsorship of Stanley, think John Alty was the Chairman at the time and Ken Hargreaves was the President if I remember rightly, he came up from Westminster especially for the launch

Re: Just a reminder of how things used to be

Hollands started their sponsorship in season 1990/91. They had the new kit specially designed 1st choice was red with yellow trim, and the 2nd was yellow. John Alty was indeed Chairman and Chris Leech ( remember him ) did the deal with Hollands. It was also in 90 that Colne Dynamoes folded just before the season got under way. This allowed us to sign Simon Westwell & Duncan Mc Fadden. Jock Wylie had signed from Colne in the summer.

That reminds of another relic I found in my loft excavation. In amongst loads of other stuff I found a copy of Phil Terry's history of Colne Dynamoes. I had a quick flick through it and saw a picture of Colne's last ever programme, which was an unplayed pre-season friendly against Garstang FC. Stanley played that game instead and Garstang sold the Colne programme to the few Stanley fans who turned up.
The programme is apparently quite collectable and I donated my copy to the club for resale, but I think it ended up in a skip somewhere.....lol

Becky joined from Rossendale the same season as Hollands 1990. Although he had played previously. Great goalscorer.

Mr T 09-07-2009 11:19

Re: Just a reminder of how things used to be

From my distant memory Paul Walmesley( who changed his name to Beck) had two spells at Stanley.

In his first he played for our 1st nursery side Altham and was a prolific scorer in the East Lancs League. On the few occasions he played for the 1st team, he struggled to impress.

I guess then he moved to Rossendale, then returned to Stanley to become the "cult hero" at Stanley during the FA Cup run

Tin Monkey 09-07-2009 11:26

Re: Just a reminder of how things used to be

Becky also played for Clitheroe and the mighty Darwen!!! :D

Don't forget that his final appearance for Stanley was as a goalkeeper, where he kept a clean sheet vs Chorley. Now that's what you call talented. ;)

A quick Google came up with this: CROMWELL ATHLETIC JFC: CROMWELL ATHLETIC Under 10C.

Becky's now 48 and manager of an under-10s side in Warrington.

Re: Just a reminder of how things used to be

when becky went in goal it was because our keepers wife went into labour, I wonder how old the little one is now, we should have some sort of Legend's of Stanley board and invite people like becky along when their name is added, we could also invite other people connected with the Legend such as the little one whose earlier arrival made him play in goal!!

we could do a couple a season after a game in the clubhouse with lots of old players about it would be a possible money spinner as well as a nice gesture from the fans/club. we could also have the players highlights, man of the match goals scored etc in the match day programme to educate the new generation of Stanley fans

just an idea

Nope, Jaysay. This Steve Moore was a mate of mine from AGS, we also worked together for Accrington Corporation as rodent control operatives (nice work if you can get it!). He was a lifelong Stanley fan, but sadly died a few years ago. Lived up Peel Park way when he was younger, then moved to Rossendale.

Know them all, and know what the photo was all about!!

Presentation to the legenary Haggis of around 2k ( which was a massive sum in those days) at the end of his testimonial year. Cheque was drawn on Barclays Silver St Bury and had to be pre-ordered. In the photo are Tony Durkin (then Sports Editor of the Accy Observer, the Club Secretary ( I forget his name, some young lad) Tony Noonan, MD of Willowbridge Transport and Vice Chairman of the Club and Haggis.

Anything else required!!!

Cheers TM for this, good days!!

PS Gave the answer without opening the photo. I wrote this reply from memory not realising that the Barclays Bank address was so clear, honest!! Remenber walking thro Bury with the cheque, it was massive, felt a right idiot!! ( some might say I'm still one now)
