match thread v Rotherham

i know it's early but when looking for an update on the FA site re: cav I noticed that Proccy is banned from the game tomorrow for being sent off for his second yellow v Bury in the final match of last season. Oh and Rotherham will be without Dale Tonge (He's still with them isn't he?)

Tonge is still with Rotherham, but one of their main strikers (19 goals last season), Rueben Reid, was sold to WBA last week.

well I have had a look at the odds today and tried to look at it objectively. I don't think that Rotherham are 5 times more likely to win the game than we are so I lumped a tenner on (plus my free £5 for joining the site)

Not just 'not officially made public', the verdict hasn't been revealed to the club at all. With no statement from the FA things appear to be very muddy.

Got everything crossed that the Guardian got it wrong, as they have with quite a few things over the past few weeks.

Sweet denial.

Stanley played well and certainly deserved a draw. Rotherham's goalkeeper was man of the match, which shows how well Stanley played.

After a couple o large bottles o Keo Im now feelin a bit more optimistic - just remember - we narrowly lost away to a side that are tipped to be promoted this season and we are heavily tipped (as we are every season) to go down.

Thats what I am going to take from todays result. Unlucky Stanley - everyone knows we should have taken at LEAST a point today - lets take it out on Walsall or Lincoln next week (please!)

Even though I was listening to 2br all game, I would really appreciate one of the Rotherham 120 to come on and tell us all that couldnt get there about the new signings performances... :)

Haggis316 08-08-2009 18:12

Re: match thread v Rotherham

Seemed our's for the taking in the first half. We'd caused their goalie to earn Man of the Match by then

The major concern was the Rotherham could not play that badly in the second half and we had not scored. Ryan going close with free kicks. Disappointed with Paul Mullin's shot from well out even if it was on target. Billy Kee showed great ability to receive passes cushion the ball on bringing it down and turn. He clearly has potential to play at a higher level.

Mark Robbins sent Rotherham out playing a higher tempo in the second half and the defending seemed a bit frenetic at times. A miss hit clearance from one of our central defenders nearly put Rotherham in and Luke Joyce also had to head off the line.

Rotherham were denied by a combination of the woodwork and a great save from Alan Martin who had almost nothing to do in the first half but played a blinder in the second half. The ball fell to the right of the post and Paul Warne could not miss.

Have just vented my disappointment on Radio Sheffield phone in.

The Rotherham Manager said our passing football in the first half at times supported John Coleman's claim to have assembled the strongest Stanley side and Brian another regular Rotherham caller praised our passing game in the first half. The Rotherham manager said we would be disappointed to have left empty handed. A policeman apologised to us for the "robbery" as we left the ground.

That's perhaps putting it a bit strong as Rotherham were marginally the better side in the second half.

Stanley were well worth a point. The goal came from a bit of sloppy defending, after we had just brought two subs on.

I didn't think Rotherham were that good. Stanley were more than a match for them

Re: match thread v Rotherham

Plenty of positives from today's game and I think we were well worth a point. Ryan should have scored when he found himself in front of goal on his own, but delayed too long. Kee looks like a very good footballer and once settled in, I think he'll score goals too.
I also think that naming Miles as captain was an inspired move, if a surprising one.

Rotherham hit the bar and had another headed off the line, but overall I thought they were very lucky to take the points.

Tin Monkey 08-08-2009 19:06

Re: match thread v Rotherham

One positive is that Rotherham have agreed a deal to sign Adam La Fondre from Rochdale, so at least we missed having to play against him.........lol

Haggis316 08-08-2009 19:30

Re: match thread v Rotherham

Thought we could have better capitalised on our many nice build ups if people had been more selfish and had a go themselves rather than passing it wide when well placed to have a go themselves.

First half Billy Kee found himself similarly placed to his first youth cup goal at Chelsea. Though he was a few yards out I expected him to turn on a sixpence and bury it in the Rotherham net as he did on that occasion. Instead he put the ball out wide to Bobby Grant. Rotherham got more time and the move produced no result.

Haggis316 08-08-2009 19:34

Re: match thread v Rotherham

Double substitution of Grant and Kee near the end Grant looked to be hobbling. Does anyone know how bad it was?

Re: match thread v Rotherham

Shame stanley didn’t manage to score while dominating in the first half.
Considering rotherham are tipped for promotion we didn’t do too badly. I noticed that Kee and mullin where sometimes both trying to win the headers rather than playing as one unit, but they will form a partnership after playing and training together. The goalie also looked good!

Is Mullin or Miles the permanent captain?

There is no way Stanley should have left that stadium without at least a point.

That will have been Stanley's best performance at their ground.

Yet Stanley garnered 4 points from the previous games when they never quite reached today's heights.

With about ten minutes to go Coley made a double substitution, Turner for Grant and Symes for Kee. Why didn't he take off either a striker or midfielder and bring on a defender, maybe then we could have gained a point and still be unbeaten. Not long after the substitution Rotherham scored. Then with only seconds left Coley took off King and brought on McConville, why I do not know. Usually when there are only seconds left the team in front make a substitution just to waste time.

Just got back, via various hostelries ;) disappointed but not too downhearted. Not much to add, as the other chaps have said it all really, but I'm more convinced than ever that we have the makings of a really good team here. Think they just need a chance to "gel" together more. Some of the passing was a joy to watch. As Haggis says, Billy Kee is going to be a star, and Martin is a sound pair of hands.

Don't worry...it's going to be a good season!

Grant had had an injury. It was Kee's debut and he had worked very hard. Coley thought fresh legs might bring a win. Defensively Symes' height was potentially a big plus though I think Gary King might have been who I would have gone for getting the elusive goal.

Billy Kee has a great first touch - the mark of any good striker.

How desperately unlucky can you get? From the radio coverage I heard we were very unlucky to end up losing but have to say that after all the off season stuff and the negative predictions from the press I'm very encouraged by this performance against a team that are one of favourites for promotion this season. Let's hope the team can take on Walsall with same confidence and get a result. I'm going for 2-0 win .Ryan from a set play and Kee to score on home debut. Cart on !

If you don't deliver the knock outs when you have the other side on the ropes there is always the danger they will deliver you a sucker punch later on and that's what happened. Simple as. Rotherham did what they are paid for. We just need to learn from the bitter experience and make sure it is not allowed to happen again.

Also Linfield obviously loves the club! Hes been at alot of the friendlys, in the clubhouse afterwards and even went to the Rotherham game! He also has alot of friends in the Stanley side and admires John Coleman!

We need this player in our team!!!

shakermaker 10-08-2009 21:55

Re: match thread v Rotherham

As hard working a player as Lindfield is, I can't help but place him in the 'Leighton McGivern' category of players who work very hard but ultimately achieve little success for their efforts. We can't take on another player like that. It'd be great if we could take him on and aid his career. It'd be good to be able to wait and see if his perceived talents come to fruition but we simply haven't got the guaranteed league status or financial resources for that.
