Re: Carling Cup 2nd Round Draw

As Rob was saying yesterday, the most money to be made will be made from TV coverage. I'd go for Newcastle, Man City or Spurs at home for the best chance of that. Possible home match against one of the 2 neighbours may be an outside chance of being shown, depending on the rest of the draw.

At this stage they tend to look for the possible biggest upset rather than the best possible football match.

Gee thanks Macca I was quite fancying Portsmouth away, nice to be able to walk to a game for once :) - Pompey at the Crown would be worth a punt for a home win, the club's in more chaos than Stanley with a Russian in the middle of selling it to an Arab, no signings all summer and the semi-stars they did have all offloaded.

alright then, you've persuaded me - I'll accept Pompey but only at home!

Carling Cup Second Round
Wednesday 12th Aug 2009

Queens Park Rangers v Accringon Stanley
Accrington Stanley will travel to Coca Cola Championship side Queens Park Rangers in the second round of the Carling Cup, week commencing Monday 24th August.

Our opponents made it through to the second round last night with a 5-0 home win over Exeter City. It will be the first time our two sides have met since the 1959/60 season, with QPR recording a 5-1 win in the old Division Three.

Further details of the tie including ticket details and away travel will be announced shortly.

If we play like we did last night (with a better final pass) we could sneak it.

Chelsea in Rd 3, Man U in Rd 4, Liverpool in the Final - Europe here we come .........

QPR are known for being expensive; but as Trapdoor said they may do a special consdiering most of their fans wont be to interested in a mid-week cup tie they expect to win.

cramped ground from memory, should make for a great atmosphere from our end.

ex-premier league team who have some quality players. Now a championship club, based in the centre of london ensures a fantastic day out.

i understand what you are saying, but it could have been worse than qpr.
i am looking forward to it, its a good challenge for our younger players against some good quality opposition.

Things have changed a lot in nearly 15 years.

Coleman was on the radio earlier and he wasn't happy with the draw. Everyone was hoping for a money-spinner, but yet again we're denied.

I think the problem with London grounds is that rent-a-mob can move round very easily, often nothing to do with the host club. I remember going to Leyton Orient years ago and we had loads of problems with West Ham fans, who of course could get in our end easily with a claret & blue scarf.

Just as well Millwall have been drawn at West Ham - all the numpties will be there. Battle royal. Shades of Green Street (film) about football hooliganism but mainly between Hammers fans and Millwall. QPR should be a walk in the park

I've not been to see them yet this term. Went a few times last year. The ground is a bit past its sell-by for an aspiring premier league club, with stands very tightly packed around the pitch, but that does mean it can generate a great atmosphere when it's full. I wouldn't have thought it would be much more than half full for a tuesday league cup R2 though - 7,000 or so?

Last season was a bit stop-start for them with three different managers.. The continental connection in the boardroom and for a while through Sousa meant they had access to loads of italian and spanish loaners who mostly flattered to deceive, and looks like they might have gone down a similar route again with this Pellicori guy. They'll definitely get it down and play football. It's not a team built too heavily on brawn other than in the obvious places - the centre halves and Mahon in midfield. I guess Agyemang and Helguson up front are no shrinking violets neither. Routledge is probably their best-known threat, but for me the best players i've seen play there are Rowlands, Vine and Buzsaky - all of whom got bad injuries last year but are now back, i think.

Don't think the defence is up to the standard of the midfield and although the rangers fans seem to like Cerny in goal, he's looked a bit error-prone whenever i've seen him.

If they play the fringe players, Hogan Ephraim (L - sided attacking MF) is one who's been around the first team for a while with bags of ability but without really nailing down a spot (think Bobby Grant) while everyone expects big things of Angelo Balanta up front.
